  • The metaphors we use to understand the world dramatically affects our experiences. Many people see life as a 'battle,' or a difficult 'test,' which assumes life is something we must endure. But there's a key shift you can make that can transform your life.
The topic for this video was inspired by Dr. Jonathan Chu's wonderful video on viewing life as an open world video game. It can be found on his channel Engine which can be found here (although his video is very different from mine): • Your Life Is An Open W...

My perspective is a little different. With this video, you’re suggesting that people might begin to improve their situations by changing their outlook on life, by viewing life more as a game rather than take life so seriously.
I actually think your most valuable piece of advice is a different message within your video.
Whether one views life as a game or some other way, people who are looking to improve their situations ultimately need to take action. Having a certain mindset, whatever that may be, is not enough.
Your video provides the key action item that everybody can follow and that has worked for countless people: take small concrete steps everyday. Don’t think too big, because the end goal is probably too overwhelming. Instead, take small steps and build momentum. Ultimately, all those small steps combine to create large progress.
For example, Joe Simpson told himself, “let me just get to the next rock.” Then when he reached that rock, he told himself, “okay, I made it here. Now let me get to that next rock over there.” In other words, he took small, concrete steps which added up to a large success (saving his own life) in the end. But the key is all those small, very specific and achievable steps he took.
Taking small, concrete steps on a regular basis is what helped me overcome low points in my life too, and I know others who have done the same. It really works.
Thus, I really want to highlight this part of your video. You’ve given people a major tool they can use to improve their situations, whatever difficulties they may be facing right now. I hope people will recognize the significance of this message and apply it to their own lives.
Don’t think too big; that’s too overwhelming. Just take small, concrete steps everyday.

Wonderfully said, Streptomyces! I appreciate you highlighting that, as I agree it's critically important. And if that's the only thing people take away from the video, that would be fantastic.
However, I also believe the combination of BOTH mindsets and action has an even greater impact and is especially powerful i.e., the choice to approach life with a sense of play increases resilience/grit and helps to take those small concrete steps everyday.
For instance, Francesca Gino's book "Sidetracked" goes into some research on how children do better in school when it's treated like a game.
Navy Seal James Waters talks about how their training has a greater than 90% drop-out rate, but those who can frame their experience as a game were most likely to pass and become SEALs.
I suppose a more materialist explanation would be that our brains evolved to select for those who like to create and play games because it does a lot of things: helps with visualization, helps anticipate possible future outcomes, and is a way for people to reward themselves in the absence of clear rewards in their environment. The mind seems naturally drawn to play. I always try to find a way to make things fun in the work I do, and in my experience it rings true that play increases resilience/persistence in the face of obstacles.
I thought about including this research in the video, but in the end left it out because I felt it would make the video too long.
In any case, I always love reading your insights, and I truly appreciate your ongoing support. Big love, my friend.

Love this discussion. Very thought provoking videos and comments. I would like to join. What if you are wrong? Wrong about life. What if life is not a game. What if it is only lived once? The idea in this video reminds me about CTMU the theory of everything, where reality is experiencing itself. I have a problem with that as i see a problem, similar to the reincarnation theory of a well known religion. What is the use of it if I, the exponent of reality do not remember it. I’m either just an empirical data gatherer or not part of the reality. Reality would be god or a similar universal entity. On return into that reality I become one with it, thus loosing my personality.
We also talking about control. Can we really control anything? We are so dependent on a multitude of factors. It is hard to have actual control. Don’t want to sound negative :) Right now I adhere to the idea that life is just worth living as is. Let go of control and desires. Just experience it in an awaken state.

Whoa, really wasn't expecting my video to be featured when I clicked, thanks so much for the shout out Elson! You really did an amazing job expanding on the concept and adding in lots of relevant life lessons! All your videos are really beautifully produced, but I must say that I think this one has some of the most actionable advice and lessons woven into it, and is super valuable. It seems to be a pattern that older souls seem to go through more unusual tribulations in life, almost like the universe assigns a higher challenge level to lightworkers and "more advanced players" so to speak, so I think that these lessons will really resonate with those going through tough times and trials, finding meaning in their suffering. Sometimes this world can be extremely harsh, and I think there can be a strong temptation to think of this world as a type of soul prison of some type. However, I definitely do agree that the challenges are here for character building and spiritual development. Without trials and adversity, many qualities such as heroism, courage, perseverance, patience, compassion, would have no meaning. I believe that Yogananda was once asked why God allows the world to be such a dysfunctional place with so much corruption and evil, and he said that it is God's will for humanity create Heaven on Earth through our own efforts, with Him guiding us, because if He just snapped his fingers and did it entirely for us, humanity would have no chance for growth or learning. I also really like how you refer to this life as a "collaborative game," as I think we are here to work together to create a better world, and also develop ourselves during the journey.
Also I had to laugh a little when you referenced Rick and Morty. I actually watched that clip a few years ago and it was one of the inspirations for my video, and I think it's so funny and interesting that we were influenced by the same media. After watching that clip, I came to the conclusion that I really didn't want to spend my entire life playing it safe, but it was only a couple more years later that I actually gathered the courage to take action. Keep up the beautiful work Elson.

I am a devout agnostic. At the tender age of 18 I lost one of my best childhood friends. It was at that point I gave serious thought about the afterlife. Years later i went on a spritual quest doing my own research beginning with the book written by Dr. Raymond Moody who did a lot of research on patients that had been clinically dead and resusitated using defibulators on near death expereinces. I still do this research done by only qualified professionals. I highly suggest to use modern these tools many of which are available on youtube. Reincarnation is real proven by translife regression hypnosis. I may be wrong but check it out for yourself. Our creator is the universe itself not some old man with a beard and a penis. 'Nuff said!

My youngest daughter loved Rick and Morty, seen every episode more than once. Some of the conversations I've had with her growing up where "what if's" about the possibility that you could enter a simulation where entire lifetime's could be experienced in a moment and each time you finished, it changed you to the core depending on your abilities to surrender to the lessons it had to offer. I would ask her to imagine how much several of these simulations each day for an entire year might change her. She couldn't imagine meeting such a person much less becoming what might result from all those lifetimes. I don't remember her mentioning the Rick and Morty episode that mirrored that conversation, I'll have to revisit that with her now that she's an adult.

Feel ya bud, year and a half into recovery from a double-concussion. Still something of a struggle, but I'm much better at it now lol
Counselling really helped - how to observe one's own emotions, as they happen, accept them, and allowing a moment to decide whether to go with that emotion, or, knowing how painful that always is, divert energy towards a moment more of calm, then problem solving.
Hard to do when the pain - and there's always mental pain with the physical - is your new 24/7 housemate. I suffered constant nausea for over a year, for example, because the head knocks knocked me into a state of constant anxiety and psych help helped me see I was literally worrying myself sick.
If professional counselling not an option, eg in the US, there are dozens of back-to-work services including non-profits. Talk to as many as possible about what you're going through. If nothing else, you get to hear your own voice, outside your head, and helps process things. As we get better at our own story, so we get better in our minds, then our body?
Something like that ! Sorry to ramble on; you look young, hale and hearty, so you've got that going for you, which is nice.

I was just talking about it the other day. Life is a game, supposed to be taken lightly and enjoyed. And yet, we take it all too seriously. No matter what we do, we will all log-off (die). It's like we are playing a video game. We enjoy it, but as we continue playing, we become invested in it, forgetting that it is just a game. We are invested in the "coins, energies and other rewards" in the game. But it doesn't change the fact that it is still just a game.

Why do I keep getting back to it if it can make me feel so miserable? Well, solving problems is indeed a lot of fun. Beyond fun, there can even be an urge, a craving for it found within. Yet I enjoy it most when there is some sort of harmony and balance in how the problem-solving unfolds. It's weird but in those moments, it feels like I develop a sense of intuition regarding the pieces that come next. Sometimes I pretty much just have to ask for those I need to see them come. I even had to look up how the code to randomly select the pieces works, as on some occasions it feels like it's reading my mind.
Tetris is a great life teacher. It reflects the attitude you have towards your own life and it can help you improve it.

That's a really beautiful description, Dalesco. I haven't played Tetris or any other video-game in years, but back when I did, I've experienced the same thing you describe: the sense of intuiting or willing the next piece to come when I need it.
Also beautifully said. I completely agree that games are great life teachers and help with visualizing possible future outcomes, strategy, intuition, etc. and they're just inherently fun and played for their own sake. I always enjoy reading your insights, and I appreciate you, my friend!

This video hits close to home as I very much relate to the being dropped in many sink or swim situations. In survival situations, your brain becomes hyper-focused on getting from point A to B, and everything else becomes secondary priority. The question of whether something is difficult, painful, or whatever emotional responses you have that isn't helpful will be pushed away and restricted, because there's simply no energy or time for them
And once you've overcome a situation where the odds were grossly stacked against you, the scary and uncomfortable things don't seem to phrase you anymore.

Loved the video, you remind me of Einzelganger a youtuber here as well, that talks about philosophy and life in general. for the commenters here you should understand that "Life is a game" is subjective, and the one making this video only shows the "possibility or what if's of having life as a game" in the end, it's totally up to you whether you accept this or incorporate this type of mindset, but for me it really depends Everything is arbitrary. Life is unpredictable and we make a lot of things or try to explain it in a number of ways like to stage tournament contest, a struggle, etc. but the endpoint there is really it's uncertain. The certainty of uncertainty.
keep up the good work looking forward to more videos from you. You are already part of my official list of the best TH-camrs.

This relates to the Heraclitus phrase "Character is destiny". My mother used to say it and I didn't really understand... and now as I get older I see more and more how true it is, because life responds to what you give it.
It also reminded me of my grandfather. An exceptionally wise man who instilled in us the idea of absurdity -not in a depressing, existencial way, but in the way that gives you perspective and lessens all loads. Just laugh, laugh even at the worst things, even at death (yes, it takes some dark humor). You'll see most human things are ultimately absurd. Nothing is that serious. This has helped me tremendously through hard times.
ETA: I was discussing "Touching the Void" with someone just as this video was released. Wow!!

Because I have late-stage Lyme disease and CFS, so willpower and good brain chemistry is not something I can rely on.

And surprisingly, this worked. I don't have my life figured out yet. But I believe, that if I try 'playing' life as intense as I can, I can just finally achieve goals that I want to achieve. Instead of leaving them, or waste to much time with thinking about them.
It's a different and great way of motivation. I think it should be learned as a skill at schools.

This is my GIFT to you and anyone reading this.. These suggestions have made me the person I am today. So take one or two or all of them and transform yourself to a super being. Thank me later. I personally did and do everything listed below and I got massive results.
    1. Write out a statement of your Short Term Goal AND your Chief Aim/Main Goal... on a "goal card" or paper.
    2. Write it out 50 times a day for 30 days preferably around the same time each day. After the 30 days, you go back and write it out ONCE a day. This is your compass in life.
    3. Set your phone alarm to go off every 3 hours (to disrupt your daily routine) and when it goes off write down your statement and then close your eyes and see yourself with your goal for 2 mins.
    4. Record your statement in your voice on a voice recorder on your phone, and play it back to yourself on loop while you sleep and as often as you can daily, example... in the shower or when you are using the rest room.
    5. Find an accountability partner. If you cannot find someone, then you MUST write out your statement DAILY. By doing this you make yourself accountable to YOURSELF.
    6. Find a community or FB group/group chat, etc and from that community form a Mastermind with one or two people who have studied from REAL Mentors and are giving VALUE. There is a "Law of Giving" and many people are using it. Andrew Carnegie told Napoleon Hill this back in the early 1900s. Its a LAW and it works. Its what I am doing with this post.
    7. Auto-Suggest (Think and Grow Rich Chapter 4) to yourself in front of the mirror in the bathroom at least twice a day. Look directly INTO your eyes OR one eye and recite your WRITTEN statement. Then splash cold water on your face. This sudden shock seals the thought into the subconscious due to emotional and physical shock from the cold water.
    8. Write out ten "I AM" statements a day. example. I AM happy, I AM more confident. Use the word MORE; implying you already have it, but want more. You trick the brain.
    9. Write out 5 things you HAVE that you are grateful for and 5 things that you are grateful for that are coming to you. Mix up the list one after the other.
    10. When in public tell people you see that you love them in your mind. Simply say "I LOVE YOU" to them as you pass them, especially when driving, because their subconscious hears and FEELS the intention. Say it to about 10 to 15 people daily. This increases your Good Karma.
It might seem like a lot. But it took me less than two weeks to incorporate the list into my life and 32 days later I started getting massive results.
What have you got to lose, try some or ALL and see your results. Let me know know too.
Have a great day... and thanks for reading.

Beautiful! Life is an infinite game. I'm personally drawn to table top role playing games for years now, as they're in many ways an analogy of what life is but also what life can be if you strengthen, practice and unlock your imagination of all the possibilities, colors and dimensions life could be and also who you could be in those situations. Life is a game, just not a finite one.

I remember playing "Settlers of Catan" back in the day. You can tell so much about someone from how they play a game like that. Some will take it so seriously, you wonder if they're even enjoying the game. Others have a light and playful approach. Both types of players can be extremely skilled. So I completely agree it's a fascinating analogy for life. Thank you for always watching, I appreciate you my friend! I look forward to your next video productions on your channel.

This is literally how I've taken to understanding life-through the lens of a homebrew TTRPG system I've been fiddling with for years. Top takeways for me in shifting to this perspective are, like at any table, have a good trusting relationship with the MC (even if it's Game Masterless or a solo one, know thyself). Once you have that foundation, you can trust boundaries and safety tools to be respected-which (perhaps counterintuitively to some) empowers you to play to your fullest, free from fear or shame

Thank you! Uncoincidentally, I was just discussing this with someone a few days ago, wondering why people often say things like "life is suffering". Really, it can be so great if you only look at it in a different way. Another synchronicity: I've had a copy of "Deep Survival" for years, but I haven't read it... Until now. 👍🏽

I’ve toyed with the idea life is a game and it helps me get into a flow state and be more effective. When you mentioned resorting to patterns during and after a traumatic event, and it made me think of their relation between childhood trauma and autism, and how patterns are a coping mechanism. Great video. Subscribing 👍🏼

I have a few questions (maybe some can relate): 1) What if you don’t like anything about the open-world game? Or you don’t see a point in playing it? After all, there are no goals. You have to make them up yourself. 2) I’m the type of person who gets overwhelmed when there are too many options. Probably due to my ADHD. I get decision paralysis. If I go to a restaurant with too many menu options, I walk out. If there are too many options in life, I end up doing nothing. Hence why I’m stuck in life. I have no idea what to do with my time, as the bulk of it is spent eating and sleeping and other mundane tasks, which drain all my energy. The few hours left aren’t enough to do anything worthwhile, so not worth starting. I also have a hard time enjoying things. Always have since I was a kid. Overwhelmed by all the sensory stuff, so don’t enjoy vacations even. Too busy trying to protect myself from sensory overload, so spend much of my time locked away. 3) How can you ever really enjoy anything knowing that it’s not really important, as well as the fact that it will inevitably end? Nothing worse than having the fun cut short. I’d rather never love than to have loved and lost. I’d rather be oblivious to it all. These things we call emotions are too much, and have actually caused me more harm than good. I have a chronic illness that I probably acquired from chronic emotional stress. I guess with being highly sensitive, the only way to survive is to be numb.

I have ADHD too and found the ideas in the video did not resonate with me at all. We tend to have a very hard set of experiences that neurotypicals won't understand. I also suffered extreme abuse (as in hospitalization and nearly fatal more than once) and emotional neglect as a child. I was trafficked for, shall we say, certain types of behaviors children shouldn't see or know, and I wasn't allowed to choose. I think that despite the rationalizations given here that adults running about telling one another to treat it like a game introduces a risk of profoundly trivializing the kinds of experiences that others are keeping hidden just under the surface. Like any fad, I can see people being in-grouped and out-grouped by how 'playfully' they present to one another. Big successes could become proof (more than they are already) of some kind of philosophical rank. One thing I know is that you can't look at others and judge them, because there are kinds of suffering that most people couldn't even imagine happening every day and everywhere. So, I don't want to hear that I'm wallowing in negativity when I could or should be gamifying it. It's called PTSD and it's not a conscious thing for me. Don't tell me I need to view it all as "this is good for my growth and resilience." Growth? Or growing old because we stopped 'playing'? Excuse me, but I was 80 years old inside before I was 10. Resilient? I survived. I've got nothing to prove to anyone on that score. And along the way, no one in better circumstances lifted a finger. No one gave me justice, compassion, or assistance. I have had to work like a dog for where I am in life, and keeping a job is no picnic when you have ADHD. So, this concept to me is a pretty glib oversimplification of adversity, and tailored to neurotypicals who weren't born into situations that tried to crush them in infancy. Yes, the survival story of the two climbers is uplifting and extraordinary, and I can see how surviving that changed their outlook. I have had second chance euphoria at times but it's not permanent and I don't think it should be. I also want to point out that they went on that climb by their own choice. They were in control until the instant of the accident, and afterwards, no one challenged their personal decisions in that situation, they only had their inner critic to answer to. Believe me when I say adversity hits a lot differently when you are powerless, and it's one thing to survive a very bad few hours, days, or a week. When your entire life has been spent climbing out of disability, poverty, hunger, abuse, or systemic oppression, "treat it like it's a game" is the epitome of trite and privileged. I'm sure your average 12 year old child bride or factory laborer would agree with me, if they were able to read this. Tl;Dr the WASP vibe of this concept is not my jam.

@@weaviejeebies My thoughts exactly. Life is not a game but more of a prison. It's a prison where you get to spend a few pleasures every once in a while to make up for extended periods of boredom. The only time it reminds me of a game is when I meet NPCs or is exposed to NPC media.

Games have painless reset options. There are challenges that are designed to make resets much harder, but resets are always an option in any great game. Playing YOLO style in popular games like Zelda BOTW etc would suck for all but the most masochistic hardcore gamers, and even then, someone who lost the YOLO challenge would surely want the option to try again painlessly.

The problem here is that a lot of us growing up with our own videogames would realize that when there was no way we could complete the level with the poor health/mana/weapons we had, we would just kill ourselves and start over at the previous checkpoint. It provably doesn't work that way IRL

Interesting discussion and editing! I'm glad youtube indicated it to me and I made the decision to click and watch it. It gave me some food for thought. It reminded me the knowledge presented in the Upanisads (the final parts in the Vedas, or Vedanta). I suppose the metaphor of a game could work as well as the metaphor of a dream, used by the Masters, to help understanding our life as individuals (jiva) in the world (samsara).

The truth though we REALLY are living a dream.
As a theologian I’ve found the most common denominator of all religions and philosophies is the agreement that there is an afterlife. Yes, they disagree on the details and definitions but, the truth is we know that an afterlife exists.
The truth that I’ve found is at the crossroads of science and spirituality. They have all discovered energy or spirit never dies.
Once you fully remember this truth, that we are in fact immortal souls living a human existence, you will awaken.
Remember my friends, we most certainly decided to experience this exact existence and with excitement.
See you all again on the other side. Have fun!

This refelects my own experience, our minds have a cache or a limited amount they can keep in immediate memory, some have more than others but regardless you have to work with what you have. By taking on one problem or a part of the problem at a time I was able to build an entire house by myself with zero experience. When things overwhelmed me I would stop and go do something else to relax and gradually think of other ways to solve the problem under no pressure or anxiety. Eventually I got everything a home needs to be comfortable working perfectly over a few years by myself....If your determined and create the conditions to let your mind work for you rather than against you, you can achieve more than you might think.
