Maestra Chen is one of my favorite artists, possibly my favorite music director; such clarity, energy, and deep understanding of the literature on singular and musical levels. The NYO2 performances are some of the definitive readings (in my opinion) - these young artists are incredible.
The conducting is so out of control and over the top. It’s actually detracting from the students’ playing. Most of them are ignoring her. The role of the conductor is not to get in the way of the musicians or the music. It should always be to reinforce, refine, guide, motivate, and consolidate. It’s not supposed to be a dramatic performance that’s contrived. The students did a good job overall. The performance was underwhelming and lacking detail because the conductor got in the way of the musical production. Self aggrandizement should be avoided on the podium. I’m a little disappointed in this performance, especially considering the talented musicians. Oh well. It’s a missed opportunity to make something really special and memorable.
Excellent conductor!

She is fantastic. And conducts from memory too!
Great to see (and hear) the bass chime so it's all in the correct octave, unlike so many performances where the line is played an octave higher.
The end gave me goosebumps, everyone looks so focused and into it
Brilliant!
