Very true. A friend gave me this same one and a few others. I was moving to another county back in 2009. They were left and forgotten in my car for about 5mth. Things got crazy with the move. I went back to my home town. 578 miles away. There was a horrible freeze/snow storm about 250 miles in. My car froze up and left me on the road for 71 HOURS! No one could get to me. I had my dog as well. I did stop and load up a cooler with water and sodas for the trip. I was only 45 miles from my hotel. Fortunately I had blankets that were my dogs and all her goodies for the stay in my home town. Her food and such. I did have extra clothing. But not really any food for me. I was moving this around to sleep while waiting on help and the roads to clear. I found the MRES!!! LOL this was the one I ate first. Not bad at all. I've never been so excited to find missing items in my life. Lol

The trick with the heater is to put salt in before the water, and shake it all up until it's hard to hold with the cardboard sleeve, then prop it up mostly flat (just at enough of an angle to keep the water in) with the heating element below the meal. Knead the package as much as you can manage until you feel it become more smooth, almost like a liquid. Let it cool a bit, and enjoy. My favorite one is chili with beans, do the above with it and crumble some cornbread in and it can turn a bad, rainy field op into a slightly less bad, rainy field op

add salt to the water before adding it. I think for whatever reason the salt that is in them cakes up, or was removed, or they are sourcing them from shitty suppliers. It almost always makes them functional again. and the MRE comes with more than enough salt to power the reaction in the seasoning/accessory bag.

I'll be honest, 95% of the MREs are fine/good as long as you're not picky. I'll admit that I'm especially not picky (loving eating soup straight from the can, unheated) so MREs were delicious for me.
The best MRE side I've ever had though was crushed blueberries with milk powder. You add water, and it's like a blueberry smoothie.

Most of the time (as long as it’s a good one), you do it just right and those things get hotter than a stove. I also wouldn’t recommend heating it inside, it releases some less than ideal fumes from the chemical reactions.

Those mini bottles of tobasco are a lot harder to find in MRE's these days; now they come in small packets, like ketchup does. You can put salt in the heater it makes it hotter. Or if you really wanna warm it up getting it going a little bit roll it up until it inflates with the fumes then quickly open it and light the fumes on fire a fireball will shoot down into the heat for a second and it’ll get it real hot real fast

I live in LA and our WSHTF supplies include MRE’s. Before Covid hit you could get a case for $40-$60. Now they’re about triple that. Thanks for your videos!

Actually, MREs are great, but if you have no other options they are GREAT.

I’m a sailor, and I remember trading things we had in our shop for MRE’s low key half the time they were better than what ever we were getting from the galley

These are what Burt Gummer lives on and if they’re good enough for that legendary homesteader they’re good enough for anyone.

Overseas we were told to mix everything as is salt for your meal, peanut butter for your bread and your pastry and it was a full meal. You got all of your carbs and nutrients from that one packet and if you’re feeling froggy, you can make fun little pocket bombs out of the heater packs

Anyone that can eat American MRE casually deserves respect

People need to keep in mind; MRE is meant to give you a high caloric intake sufficient to allow you to live. Tasting good is a luxury.

The three cheese tortellini with smarties, a pound cake, and the jerky is the pinnacle of MREs and I would literally prefer it to a 3 michellin star restaurant

For future reference, if your heater is not working, use your hands to massage the heater a bit. Isn't 100% effective but it works most of the time

I had a friend who used to go to a local food pantry. One time they were passing out MRE's to people needing food. So we tried it just like you found out. It wasn't absolutely horrible , but it wasn't great. Sometimes you just have to take what you can get. I think you needed to put the raisins on the peanut butter.

The heater pack works better in sunlight.
