    Before planting out any plants, to give them the best start, always give your shrubs and perennials a good water while still in the pot. And another good drink after planting to settle the roots and the soil.

    Also, they grow super easy from cuttings. Plenty of good videos on them. I live in the North East and have the mophead version, this summer I stuck four cuttings (from new growth if planting from cuttings in summer, old if planting in winter) straight in the ground, no rooting hormone. Two of them lived and are thriving. Just remember to water every day if it's hot, water often or start them in a cup of water till you see roots. There are some videos on that too.

    Helping discussion about planting zones. Another hydrangea that probably would have worked in zone 5 is the Oakleaf Hydrangea. The foliage is so colorful and interesting that the creamy flowers that come later are almost a lovely afterthought. Kilgore-Lewis House in Greenville, SC has a lovely stand of oakleaf hydrangeas by the pond.

    Garden centres are not soil experts they are just sellers. We all need to do homework before buying plants, environment, area and soil have to come into consideration before blaming it all to a garden centre. Read the label though to see how big, wide or small a plant can grow. Nice tips guy about hydrangea 👍👍.

However, five years later I bet that Hydrangea has really grown. I think we would see the smile on her face today as she sees the beautiful Hydrangea as it appears now. I had 2 Niko Blue hydrangeas in zone 5 at a previous house. Every year I cut them back to the ground in early spring. Regardless, they grew to about 3 feet tall, bloomed profusely. So, in my experience, they can and DO bloom on new wood. Nancy should have just tried hard pruning in spring, it would have bloomed just fine. The advantage of getting the new cultivars for colder zones is that the shrubs will probably get taller.(since hard pruning would not be necessary to get rid of winter kill)....so not a total waste.;-)

    WOW, what an awesome and informative video! Sorry that the comments by curlyarax and Charles Damery are so negative! They failed to see the primary benefits of the video.
    I am fairly new at gardening and search out information for each plant I like and want for my garden and I am in Texas visiting my daughter and her family. My daughter always says "she doesn't have a green thumb." She loves Hydrangea's and has been asking her hubby for years to get her one. We were at a local home Depots garden center several days ago and she saw one with 2 beautiful pink globe like flowers on it and he told her to help get it into the cart! She about fell over, LOL. Anyway, along with it, he purchased a bag of potting soil, Miracle Grow. He planted it in their garden with adding the purchased soil under and around it and I believe it is a H. macrophylla. The spot he planted it in receives primarily shade all day. He's a pretty good gardener as he helps his mother with her garden.
    My question is, is this the right spot in the garden and soil for these 2 types? Too, what are your thought the product, "flower boost?"
    I look forward to hearing your response to these questions.

      No, just cut them back after they die. Down to the first set of leaves.

    Eek! Compacting the soil by walking in your beds! I grow Nikko blues in zone 4. You have to add a little bit of sulphur to insure the blooms stay blue. Mine usually grow more blue but there is always some pink. If you don't get a lot of snow cover wrap it in burlap and you'll be fine. I would NEVER have dug out that Hydrangea. It was just getting well established.

    Can everyone just stop talking shit about this woman. Have you heard of aspergers now Im not a qualified medic so im not saying its that but it could be something along those lines. Have some respect. She is a nice polite woman who is a very keep gardener and clearly a persistant one because she didn't give up on her flowers! Just enjoy the video and LEARN from what they are saying not talk shit!

    Wife likes hydrangeas we have a couple. Can somebody tell me do hydrangeas tolerate being dug up and replant it in a different location? What's the best time of year to do that if that's the case.
    Thank you

    • @randomchargingplug1616
      @randomchargingplug1616 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Rxonmymind To Yes, matured Hydrangeas can be transferred to a more favorable zone in your garden, as long as the zone is conditioned to meet Hydrangeas growth requirements. Moreover, make sure you're decisive to the relocation cause most plants develop impairment (growth stunt, stress, nute burns, root rot) from multiple transplantations.
      Ideally, you should transplant when it's in vegetative stage rather bloom. Spring should be fine, even though it's bloomed. Just for future references, vegetative stage. 🔌

      Yes Indeed, I don't put anything in mine when replanted & they will thrive as well as ever, You can drown NEW replanted plants with fertilzer or chemicals, Fertlize later on after established...Pardon my spellin', I'm not from USA but have homes here..LOVE MY PLANTS!

      Mary McDonald cut back and no flower will be left.....if u live colder than 6, just choose endless summer or smooth hydrengea. they ll flower on new growth

      Peat

    • @drippyinfinities
      @drippyinfinities 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The best option is Ammonium sulfate, which is a natural product and available at most garden centres. Though peat is also highly acidic, it only works as an acidifier in certain soil types. In clay soil it's no good.

      You are a zone 2 or 3. Your best bet is to go to the local garden center and see what they stock. In general they will stock what will grow. www.richters.com/Zones/nazones.jpg
