    Once when I was in the emergency room (after having cut my thumb badly in the kitchen) the guy on the next table over was a career machinist. He was clearing chips from a mill in a way he had done a thousand times before... but that was the one time he didn't get away with it. And therein lies the lesson: you may get away with something a thousand times, but it only takes once. Fortunately he only lost the nail and a shaving of bone, not the whole finger. Me, I'll keep using sacrificial things like chip brushes. My fingers don't go anywhere near the work, the tool, the chuck when anything is moving.

    As an old machinist with 10 digits still intact I cringed when you checked your surface finish with the spindle still running.
    That would be number one on the “Never do this” list. Right up there with checking for a sharp edge on a spinning part.
    The cutter will take no prisoners. In a flash your fingers will be gone.
    Yeah yeah Safty Police and all that.
    When leaning to fly a plane my instructor said to me. There are old pilots and bold pilots, but no old bold pilots.
    Stop your spindle when you hand leaves the feed wheel 😀
    I agree with the others that’s only cutting on one or two inserts. That should be obvious on the inserts themselves.
    Only one or two will show any signs of ware.
    Perhaps a dial indicator on the inserts to measure their location.

    • @samrodian919
      @samrodian919 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I too cringed and he didn't do it once but three times. The last time i thought he was going to be bitten big time and lose two or three fingers at once, he would not have lost just the tips of his fingers but the whole lot as they were dragged into the cutters. And don't forget there as six of the greedy little bastards not just one!

      I've been hit on the fingers a few times. It actually doesn't hurt as much as you might think.
      But I wouldn't like to get caught between the chuck jaws and something else.
      Or loose a chuck of flesh to the milling insets
      I'll be careful, I promise.

      The other big one is V belt pulleys or Leed / Feed Change gears.
      Never use a lathe without a guard on the change gears. They are like a meat grinder and will grab anything that goes near including you clothes. If you don't have a guard make one.
      V belts pulleys will grab you and whip your finger around the pulley. I know you have exposed pulleys, my 80 year old lathe does too but my hands never go anywhere near them when they are running. When I'm changing the feed gears the power plug is out and hanging where I can see it. I don't want to harp on about this. If you learn one thing from your TH-cam buddies this should be it. You won't loose a chunk or get a cut. It will hack your finger off or crush it beyond repair. We don't want to be calling you Stumpy :)
      I'm still enjoying your videos and your commentary so keep it up.
      I'm up to the editing stage with my first video on a quad bike repair. Man that is as time consuming as the actual job.

    Sounds like one or two inserts are doing all the work. Would have liked to see you use a clock to check insert heights. I would think you could get a better finish with the fly cutter and a very sharp well honed edge on a decent piece of HSS than with the face mill.

    No need to apologize for a minimal budget and that resulting in import tools. We would all like to have a tool chest full of Sterratt and Brown and Sharp equipment but that’s not possible for the bulk of us. I have many Banggood products in my shop that have gotten decent reviews simply because I can’t afford high end stuff for a hobby shop. Keep your hopes up for that mill. One day it will be in your shop and we will have the joy of watching you go through your paces with it.

    Glad the test run of the face mill had a happy ending.
    I love the face mills with carbide inserts. I have one which uses 4 inserts. 1 1/2in dia (3.8 cm). I was not sure if this would be too big for my milling machine, but it runs so smooth I could have purchased e.g., 2in dia ( 5.1cm).
    This is a good addition to your tool temple.

    • @Rolingmetal

    • @lv_woodturner3899

      I think it will work for you. They are balanced when running. The particular milling machine will just determine the maximum depth of cut.
      I am not in a hurry so I normally take light cuts such as .5mm.
      I bought a 3in dia boring head (7.6cm). This is too big if I attempted to use it at the max diameter.

    There is a speed and feed issue here. Plus I'd take a deeper cut with the inserts. Either speed up rpms or reduce feed rate.
    Reason I say deeper depth of cut is because its not getting into the zone the carbide wants. Id be different if it was a single point tool taking spring passes

    • @cgrobe21
      @cgrobe21 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not defending the cheap inserts because a high quality insert is bar none. Just saying..

    • @MegaLostOne
      @MegaLostOne ปีที่แล้ว

      Agree with what you are saying here. Carbide needs a certain depth for them to work properly or they just rub (which it looks like to me is happening) because of the top edge engaging the material. I also believe that is why others saying to use aluminum inserts works better since they have a ground sharp edge vs the blunt edge of a standard insert for harder alloys/metal but this will decrease the life of the aluminum cutter. Reading on many insert manufacturers sites will show that too shallow of a cut with the wrong insert will cause uneven surface and rubbing to happen. I'M NOT a machinist and not claiming to know everything and only going off of what the insert manufacturers say/recommend, this is why when I get close to size but there is very little left to remove I go to HSS on my lathe or a traditional end mill for finish.

Would it be dangerous ? I have my wood lathe to be able to cut metal (mostly alumimium and plastics ) with a three jaw chuck and an compound table and a diy tool holder , its ok for now for what i need it for but i cant part anything but plastics cause it chatters and the compound table uses alot of space and i cant have tailstock support and since i need a four jaw chuck anyway i wonder if i can do some milling with it without having to buy mt2 tool holder .

    You should make a third axis attachment since you don't have a mill. If you're worried about the complexity or something you could make flat ways to reduce that. It might be shitty but if it has a gibb you can learn to make it work, I'm sure. My little mill/ lathe combo has a bend in one of the threaded rods so it still has about .0125 mm of wobble in that axis even if I tighten it up to Incredible Hulk settings. I just deal with it.
    I love seeing people make much out of nothing or very little. I think it's awesome.
    BTW, I've never paid enough attention to know if you have any dial indicators.

      @@Rolingmetal Probably for the best.
      Probably not going to get a performance increase over the fly-cutter for such a light setup from the stand point of metal removal..
      Try leaving every other insert out if chip load gets to high.
      For alum there are better inserts than the ones you have there. Just putting one of them in is often best for finish. Would still be better balanced that a fly-cutter and the extra mass of this cutter may dampen vibrations some.

    duidelijk te horen dat slechts een plaatje snijdt.
    bij 600 toeren en 6 plaatsjes zou je die tik niet moeten horen.
    vandaar ook dat de finish niet optimaal is.
