Dang, that sucks. I gotta ask, do cops not have seatbelt cutters as part of their standard equipment? If not, why not? That upper length of seatbelt over the shoulder is very accessible (it’s mounted to our favourite pillar), and while slightly destructive it would mean not having to practically climb into the car to unbuckle someone to get them out, which could be difficult enough with an unconscious person, let alone one that is resisting. The other thing I’ve often wondered about in these uncooperative occupant situations is whether some sort of pepper spray fogger could be developed into a non-pyrotechnic device that could be deployed like a grenade. Pop it into the footwell from either side of the vehicle, close the door, and let them come to you. There’s no need to go in there yourself, is there?
There are, obviously, OC grenades... The problem is that most ARE pyrotechnic. It's hard to get a good spray of the gas without something flammable. I mean... Most of the carrier fluid for most OC sprays is also flammable. That said, situations like this... Pepperball guns or beanbag guns could also work. Frankly, I don't know why pepperball guns aren't in more common use.
Let's be fair. He killed the officer due to a major cultural disconnect. We are talking about a cultral belief that the cops are out to get you, and that it's "us vs them" so then you factor in the fact they are hurting him, he is going to find it very easy to get over any moral inhibitions he might have left.
Coat or not, it worked and he got lit up. The reason they didn't use pepper spray is they still had to get him out of the car, forcing them to get near the spray and be affected too. It's nasty stuff.
John, I’m surprised you didn’t mention what I believe was the biggest mistake: why did McCowan slam the door? That’s what gave the perp the chance to draw his gun with surprise, had he left the door open he might have seen him trying to draw his gun in time to react, it seems like McCowan did it as an anger response? Because it doesn’t make sense to shut the door if you’re trying to take him out of the car. Edit: turns out the bad guy shut the door, not McCowan
I can see why you would believe he shut the door from the perspective of her body cam 7:15 but at 9:40 we can actually see that the man in the car shut the door himself.
Pepper spray takes away a suspect's eyesight, not tasers. Tasers and resisting are stall tactics, giving the suspect more time to work up the courage to commit other crimes.

Those of us in VA are chuckling. It’s actually against the law in VA for a police officer to say “I smell marijuana” as probable cause to search a vehicle. State congress passed it, Northrop signed it. It’s law. They literally can’t search without real good probable cause. Smelling weed isn’t probable cause.
That's OK, so he was drunk driving, but then he said he was putting up his hair, so if that's his story, then he can be done for dangerous driving, seeings as he is saying he was putting up his hair, then he would have no hands, on the steering wheel, because you can't put up your hair one handed. Digging that hole 😂😂
first, sincere condolences to the officer and families affected. absolutely horrible. second, i’m genuinely curious, but i thought odor of marijuana was reasonable suspicion, not probable cause? isn’t that why they need dogs to sniff, so they can get probable cause? please correct me if i’m wrong but that is my understanding.
More importantly… The “I smell weed”, wasn’t even necessary in this case (at least not for advancing to a DUI investigation). His driving alone, justified a DUI investigation… which justifies a lawful order to exit the vehicle, which (I believe) justifies a pat down for weapons. Claiming “I smell weed”, really only gave him a point to argue.
@@bobinthewest8559 i agree, in this case the marijuana odor wasn’t the major factor at play, it was the erratic driving. say old Joe gets pulled over for “not signaling” a turn. the officer then states he smells the odor of marijuana. in that case, does the officer have enough evidence to search? if so, what’s stopping any officer who wants to search a car from claiming they smell weed? it just seems like a very very easy way to violate the 4th amendment.
@@who_k_nowsSome states have ruled that 'I smell weed' is not probable cause: PA, MD, NJ, but in many, it still is. I'm still waiting for DUI checkpoints to be viewed as the horrific violation of the 4A that they are. Not only do those use the same subjective indicators: 'smell alcohol', 'bloodshot/glassy eyes', but they don't even need any pretext for the initial stop. Michigan v. Sitz is one of their most braindead rulings.
This may be a stupid question but I’ve wondered this a couple of times on these videos: when they refuse to undo the seatbelt and get out, can the officer go to the other door and unhook seatbelt from there? From that vantage point also it seems like they will see they are reaching for a gun
My teammate was shot with a 7.62x39 bullet in his leg, shattered his femur. He couldn't get up, let alone move. This woman took a round close range to the femur and RAN to cover. Regardless of adrenaline, pain tolerance, etc. Officer Eggers is a SURVIVOR. I am doubtful that even 1% of the human population could move at all after getting hit in the femur. My teammate is 6'4 220 and could run a 5:40 mile, at the time he was at the pinnacle of human fitness, and I watched him try and stand up after he was hit and he was not able to stand, let alone get up and RUN. Shoutout Officer Eggers, what an absolute badass woman for this one. Even got shots down range on the scumbag. RIP Officer McCowan.
I’m surprised your context didn’t answer that for you.. you’re talking apples to oranges. Firstly being a pistol caliber cartridge compared to a rifle cartridge. Secondly the rifle cartridge being a fat 762.39. Thirdly a shattered femur is kinda difficult to stand on compared to a through and through with no shattered femur. It doesn’t matter if you’re the pinnacle of anything when you lose structural support entirely.

I'm noticing cops are getting very lax with claiming they smell marijuana in order to search cars. On the show on patrol live it seems like they claim to smell marijuana in every single vehicle they stop. I actually have a hard time remembering a car that they stopped that they didn't claim they smelled marijuana. Maybe she did smell it. My question is whether officers are using it as a pretense to search vehicles. In Virginia they passed the law that it is not probable cause to search a vehicle. And I think that makes sense. If you make it too easy for officers to violate the 4th amendment, maybe not all but many will do it and it will become routine. The reason it becomes routine is because they can claim they smell marijuana and may find something else and it pads their stats. Maybe I'm out of touch but I find it hard to believe every single vehicle that gets stopped has had marijuana smoked in it. I haven't smoked marijuana in 20 years so I know if an officer claims it on a traffic stop with me, we're going to have a problem. And the question is what can you do if they claim they smell marijuana and find nothing during the search? How can you prove that they're lying?
Exactly its illegal and its bs but thats their go to. They are trained liars. The traffic stop is legal but lying about weed to justify searching the car is bs.

John, I’m surprised you didn’t mention what I believe was the biggest mistake: why did McCowan slam the door? Interesting comment. Like to hear the correct answer.
More importantly…
The “I smell weed”, wasn’t even necessary in this case (at least not for advancing to a DUI investigation).
Why would anyone look at this situation and say oh, there should have left them alone.
Felon in possession of a firearm,
intoxicated operation of a vehicle,
felon while intoxicated possessing a firearm
If I was a felon, I would be saying that.
Because feelings and a shallow depth of thought.
Why?
Because
1) Libertarians who have low critical thinking skills and take their ideals to ridiculous extremes
2) Immature cop-haters
3) People who are criminals themselves
4) and People who can’t tie their own shoes
Felon in possession of a firearm is not only irrelevant but I don't even recognize it as a crime The idea of a felony has been rendered a joke in this country if you go into a movie theater with a camcorder to record the movie you're a felon
Second it's unconstitutional as it stands even if a felony actually meant anything anymore because you're applying a permanent punishment to something that has a stated fixed punishment which violates the Constitution under cruel unusual punishment there is no provision in the sixth amendment that says if you're a felon your rights can be revoked
So we can argue about that all day but my position is fixed I don't consider that to be a crime and I don't consider that law to be valid if you're out on parole that's different since your punishment has not been completed yet but if you've served your time I don't recognize law that says you cannot possess a firearm
It's also irrelevant because they did not know he had a firearm therefore it is not a factor in the validity of the stop or their actions
Next they fabricated a reason to escalate the situation by declaring they smelled marijuana which anybody with two brain cells to rub together nose is a complete fabrication and total BS
So at this point the stop is no longer lawful this is now an illegal in prisonment and an unlawful assault he defended himself I don't like it I don't want to agree with it I'm not going to declare whether it was justified or not but self-defense doesn't go away just because the one harming you is wearing a badge and a uniform
Self-defense against police is valid and constitutional whether you like it or not whether the courts agree with it or not
He begged and pleaded for them to stop and they continued to torture and use lethal force against him a taser is lethal force people can and do die especially after multiple taser discharges
They had no probable cause to escalate the stop it was not a felony stop They had no probable cause to pull him from the car their options since he did not appear to be impaired in any obvious matter The only reason they could even move along that path was with the fabrication of an odor of marijuana
I'm not saying he wasn't impaired what I am saying is they lacked probable cause to declare him so
Therefore they lacked probable gauze to escalate the stop and to pull him from the car
Again I do not care what the courts declare The courts in this country are a joke kangaroo courts by every measure of the term

Lol none of us do. But she had dubious answers. Bad guy Felon asked for a K9 that clearly smells for weed and she says they don’t smell for weed. She refused K9. Also it’s very common because they can easily lie. This time it got a cop killed. I’m on the cops side, but not if they do something illegal like trying to skirt their way around the 4the amendment. Also she didn’t cover him with lethal, she really made this a 💩 show
It's so unfortunate that the officer lost his life, May he R.I.P., God Bless his Soul, I think that they should have had a better protocol or procedure in getting him out of his vehicle, maybe, the female officers should have had her hand on her firearm and ready to go or have her firearm drawn already while the other officer deal with the perp, not that it would've made much difference, but I don't think she asked him if he had any weapons in the vehicle
His wife is probably glad she's going to get a big check and doesn't have to get beat anymore.
Yes there is protocol for this it's called don't commit a felony lie and fabricate probable cause to escalate a normal traffic stop to violence
That's it That's all there is he clearly wasn't a hardcore gung-ho bad guy who would just start shooting on contact it took him being continuously electrocuted tortured for him to resort to lethal Force
She committed a felony she lied and fabricated probable cause at that point she knows she's lying and of course the suspect knows she's lying and since he's a felon he knows he's getting shafted
He asked them to stop he begged for them to stop he pleaded for them to stop All of this was ignored because they had played their hand and doubled down They then began electrocuting him continuously to the point where he can't even plead or beg anymore he's just screaming in pain and he responds with lethal Force and self-defense
Soft defense doesn't go away just because the aggressor is wearing a badge in a uniform
I'm not saying he's right I'm not saying he's justified none of that matters to me lethal Force was used against him he was being tortured and he knew he was being shafted he was now a cornered animal in excruciating pain he responded with lethal Force
All of this stems from that one decision in their decision tree to lie and fabricate probable cause to extend the stop.
All she had to do was follow the law and not do that and all three of them would have gone home to their families.

@@Pontus_Kjallman thanks
Is the smell of weed probable cause? Serious question.
