  • On 6 October 1997 5 of the 8 C-630Ms were in operation along with two GP50s on trains #306 and #305. We see train #305 being assembled by GP18 4700 in Sydney. After #306's arrival we follow #305 from Sydney to Port Hawkesbury and then on to New Glasgow. As the sun sets at Trenton we see a pair of RS-18s in action pulling cars from Trenton Car Works and the power station.

Nice catch! The horn on the ex-Burlington Northern Geep sounds like a Leslie S3K that's in slight need of a tuneup. Still, neat to hear as they're becoming less common.

ACLTony You have a better ear than I do!

Well, not necessarily. It's just that one of my favorite locomotive horns was the Leslie S4T, which was used on Amtrak's SDP40Fs and I heard very often when I was a teen. Although not exact, the horn on this unit is in the same "family" so I recognized the sound right away.

Well, thanks. But if anyone wants to become more familiar with locomotive horns, on TH-cam just type in "Leslie locomotive horns, and Nathan locomotive horns. A lot of video clips of each of these brands will will pop up, including the S3K and S4T.

Or am I think the "Cartier"?

    • @david-othen

NewBoston Truck 1 Cartier had second-hand Alco built C-630s whereas CB&CNS had MLW built C-630Ms which were purchased from CN.

peter forden Unfortunately the more recent CB&CNS locos do not have names and the named locos have been retired.

David Othen that is sad, a Loco deserves a name even if it isnt a good one... a narrow guage railway running out of Stockholm nicknamed one of their loco's Hitler as it had an awesomely bad ride possibly Buttercup didnt do it !

Most or all of this line has been ripped up, correct? I believe the monster MLW's now work for the Western New York and Pennsylvania. Still love those Nathan K3L's though.

NewBoston Truck 1 No the line is still there and in fact there was a special train last week from Sydney to Port Hawkesbury with a car that had been taken to Sydney for repais. IIRC two of the C-630Ms were purchased for use in the US.
