    But the religious circumstance in Japan is so complicated as even some Japanese people don't understand it well.
    I tried best to simplify it, so you can grasp the main features of Shintoism and Buddhism.

    Buddhism is beauty....I follow the footsteps of buddha and feel amazing and relaxed all the time because I hve no force to be a certain way and I dont have to change my culture or language or pray a certain way...Buddhism is just a middle path way of life to be a good human being and how we ourselves can achieve enlightenment like Buddha.

    Thank you for your video of the two religions. I found Shintoism great which is part of my interest, also I live in the San Francisco Bay Area of California and I am a member of the Konko-Kyo religion in San Francisco. Konko-Kyo was a new Japanese religion since 1859 and it has Shinto traditions incorporated but Konko-Kyo remains independent from Shinto. In my future as an adult, I plan on practicing and praying both Shinto and Konko-Kyo, because I want to find peace in my heart and my heart to the people of Japan! Thank you and let us keep Shinto alive to bring peace and harmony to the world.

      Thank you for your comment. The culture of Shintoism couldn't be enough told in this video, and I'm also the one who is inspired much by Shintoism (buddhism as well, and that proves I follow the mixed religions haha). Konko-Kyo is also known as one of the historical religions in Japan. I'd like to post a video someday, but there're many religions in Japan today, which makes it interesting to figure out what kind of root or historical background each religion has.

Buddhism is philosophical religion and Shintoism is animism which is ritualistic and connected to nature. Japanese did not discard their religion. But now mostly they are atheist. Each country has their own Buddhist culture. Tibetan Buddhism is mixture of their original bon religion with Buddhism. Chan Buddhism is mixture of Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism. Shintoism is similar to Shamanism (North Native American Animism), Kaharingan (Dayak Animism), Huna (Hawaiian/Polynesian Animism) and Anitism/Dayawism (Filipino Animism). They're not religions but more like a way of life or worship of life. Anyone can believe in it and practice it. Doesn't necessarily mean they are religious or identify as that belief.

    Can anyone become a Kami in Shintoism?
    Does Shintoism have an "enlightenment" concept?
    Thanks for your help!

    • @TheJapanalyst
      @TheJapanalyst  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      theoretically yes, but it's not that easy. there're some became Kami in Shintoism, but generally speaking they were the highly respected people.
      Simultaneously they were on a way of achieving something, but died with huge resentment. People were afraid of their resentment, and so they come to be enshrined.
      And as for Enlightenment, the answer is no, in that shintoism has no clear doctrine. There're many Kamis in Shintoism, but episodes about each kami are really unique, and clearly different from the ones of buddhism.

    I follow both. To me, Shinto is my chores for the soul while I'm alive. And Buddhism is my chores for the soul for when I depart this world.

    After watching your video it seems like Shintoism is pretty similar to Hinduism. People say it's not a religion. Hindus worship littaraly everything. We have like 33 million gods and goddesses and beings. You are free to make up your own god and worship .

    Hi, great video. I was curious if you could answer how the Shinto belief in ancestor veneration and the Buddhist concept of reincarnation is explained. Because from the outside it looks like these beliefs contradict. Does the spirit of the life stick around or does it go through another cycle of birth and death? Thanks!

    This explains why Japenese considers animate but not living things as "alive" such as a flowing river and a moving cartoon. It's a Shinto belief.

    I feel like "swastika" has such a strong negative connotation in the west now that you might as well just call 卍 "manji" instead. Otherwise, some people might still misunderstand the meaning. Many people are ignorant that it was a much older symbol used in Buddhism and other cultures. The word swastika is derived from Sanskrit though, so even that word is unrelated to the Nazi's use of the symbol. Just a thought on translation; When do you decide to make a translation or when to just use the Japanese word instead?

    • @ahad1609

    There are three roads that lead to God, One is the path of faith and worship, the other is the path of good works performed for the love of God and a third a path through knowledge to wisdom that leads to God. But you will find that all three are but one and the same.

    Buddhism came through China and Korea through West , while shintoism came from the Jomons in the north. I argue they have tribal spiritual elements like animism that is similar to native North americans through Siberia and Alaska. Making shintoism an religion with a native link.

    This video:
    1. Place of Worship
    2. The Origin
    3. Kami (gods) and Hotoke (Buddhas)
    I think more fundamentally, the 3 differences would be:
    1. General difference: almost no doctrine, cosmology, teachings at all (Shinto) vs. deep, complex doctrine, cosmology, teachings (Buddhism) (exemplified by the huge corpus of writings for the latter); however, generally Japanese folks are ignorant of both, so asking will be futile most of the time.
    2. Shinto generally is just shrine culture (going to shrines in new year, or for good luck in taking tests, etc.); however, a tiny minority is Sect Shinto, actual religions that grew out of Shinto background - these actually have teachings, worship, etc. Some of the more famous ones are Konko-kyo, Omoto-kyo (famous from Aikido), etc.
    3. Buddhism in Japan has many sects that are extremely different from each other: main divisions are one-practice Buddhism (Pure Land sects and Nichiren sects - basically just chant to be saved), Zen (emphasis on self-cultivation via meditation), and Mikkyo (emphasis on secret cultivation methods - similar to Tibetan Buddhism).
    During COVID, interestingly - Shinto shrines almost always stayed open throughout - they are essentially tourism spots after all - but Buddhist temples mostly closed in tandem with emergency periods.

    Which religion do you practice if you have a religion? I grew up following Hinduism but converted to Nichiren Buddhism, nearly six years ago. I like Buddhism because it is not a religion as such, philosophy bla, bla, bla.

    • @TheJapanalyst
      @TheJapanalyst  4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Oh Nichiren Buddhism is one of the prominent sects in Japan!
      Well, I would say I do have a religion, but I practice both of Shintoism and Buddhism. I follow the ways of thinking of the both religions. To be honest, I can't say which religion is more dominant for me.
