My late friend Geoff K, taught there in the late 70s. He loved the place especially its people. I was gifted his beautifull shell necklaces from Tuvalu after his passing. All the best to Tuvalians.

Tuvalu is a lovely atoll and is surprisingly easy to get to from Singapore as we have direct flights to Fiji. We stayed there for 4 days and it was amazing how you could see both sides of the country while you are riding on the road. The people were super friendly and you definitely need to visit their stamp shop too!

Of course, but that’s easier said when you’re not living on a coral atoll… try saying "we’re all living on borrowed time" when you’re there. Some people may agree, such as the people who want to stay as long as possible, but the people who see what’s happening and are supportive of relocating probably wouldn’t want to hear that. Lol.

Staying on map reminded me of spotting Tuvalu as a child, we used to play games over the world map to spot difficult names, & Tuvalu always used to be our difficult bet as it was tiny and hard to find, that immediately striked me as soon as I read about it in an article over FB... Quickly searched about Tuvalu to know the current scenario and found this video... really touching... I really wish the best for this wonderful nation and it's courageous and generous people

The scenery, the people, houses, the landscape and motorcycles reminds me a lot of the kampungs here in Malaysia. It astonishes me that despite the huge distance between us, we could still share a lot of similarities due to our common origin. What is needed is a benevolent arrangement of technologically capable states that could strengthen the coastline and raise it above the harmful effects of tides and rising sea levels. The country that traditionally knows this is the Netherlands. The country that creates artificial islands is China. With the wholehearted help of the world community, think in that direction. May the almighty God help you all and Tuvalu! ❤❤❤

So I’m sure he’d love to hear your two cents on how we’re all on borrowed time, and they can just go ahead and forget about their problems with erosion. Yeah. Because people who don’t live on Tuvalu believe we’re all on borrowed time. That’s a given. You have to be ignorant not to know that. Don’t state the obvious. It just sounds somewhat dismissive to say the entire population of the planet is on borrowed time. It sounds like your trivializing their real issues with erosion and their HOMES. Maybe they just buy a string of neighboring private islands and have the UN recognize their relocation? Maybe Australia has a few empty islands? They might end up with an even bigger country.

Coastal land is and has always been unstable and prone to erosion but of course its easier to blame climate change.

    • @erikm8372
      @erikm8372 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

Well… regardless of the cause of the climate change, isn’t erosion itself a form of climate or environment change? 🤔 I mean, you said yourself, coastal land is and always has been unstable and prone to erosion… I agree. So I don’t think there is any one finger to point the blame with. Some of it is undoubtedly naturally occurring changes, but a lot of things are likely to be exacerbated by the overpopulated planet and mismanaged resources and waste. As in, these may not be the root causes of climate change, I don’t know, but those things surely won’t add anything good to an already existing, natural issue.

That won't work. There's going to be meters of sea level rise.
The only way I can see for people to stay there, is if you raise the places people live far above the current sea level.
      That's a serious construction project.
At the moment it would mean building islands in the air.
I'm sure this sounds crazy, but it is the only solution I can think of to deal with multiple meters of sea level rise.
You have to plan for it and build to where you think the sea will be at its highest point.
This is NOT an easy solution, but I think it is the only way people will be able to stay there, as opposed to moving somewhere else.
The only other option I can think of is finding an island/islands that are high above the current seas, and currently uninhabitable for the people to move to.
This comes with the challenge of making such islands habitable.
Whatever they decide to do, I wish the Tuvaluan people the best of luck, it would be a shame to lose their languages, and culture.

6:40 I’m so confused. With all due respect, Elder Kalisi fears "the erosion of values, languages and customs", yet he’s saying how they’re all Christians-a European-imported, forced-conversion "custom"? 🤔 What customs? Just their lifestyle on the island, I guess. But if that’s the case, that they’re all super Christian, then relocating shouldn’t be a problem as there are Christian churches and communities EVERYWHERE… lol.
Then the narrator says how Kalisi can see the "impacts of climate change everywhere", but that-because they’re Christians-it is their "belief" that Tuvalu will "never be underwater."
So, help me understand this-does the Bible specifically mention Tuvalu as never going underwater? 🤔 Even if it did, what does being a Christian have to do with an atoll supposedly never being taken over by the ocean? When you’re one day living in the ocean, waist-deep with the dolphins, sharks and fish and everything else, and no dry land, then what?
