Calypso's whole "invisible guards" thing is the fact every god canonically in EPIC has the ability to summon background vocals lmao, I love that theory though!!! Calypso's been so controversial ever since her first song came out but in this one it's hard not to feel just a LITTLE bit bad. As always all of her actions were inexcusable and she should probably just go to jail for life. But people really overthink that she's been on that island HER WHOLE LIFE ever since she was a kid most likely. She doesn't know what consent really means, she doesn't know how far she's pushed Ody, and sure it seems obvious to US what the limit was, but she probably thought she needed to keep pushing him to get through, despite how horrible it was. Luckily she's more redeemable in EPIC since she doesn't do the really intense things she's done in actual Odyssey, and her whole " sorry my love's too much for you" probably wasn't to have so much denseness, but probably for the fact Odysseus had no one that loved him on that island, except Calypso who she tried her best to, and overshot a lot. Again she has no clue what love is other than romance, she hasn't had friends so she doesn't know how those work. :C There's also several ways Odysseus means by " But not in the way you want me to " near the end. My speculation and headcanon is he meant it in a friendly way, which the way he said it is what gave Caly the hint. He doesn't HATE her and could probably understand Calypso's reasonings after she gave her tiny backstory, so as hard as it sounds he was at least grateful Calypso kept him alive, because if he did end up giving up, it'd suck since Athena saved him eventually.
I knew about the thing with Gods being able to summon their own choir. But since Calypso is sort of like a half-god, or just, not really a high level god, I figured her backing vocals would just be her invisible servants.
"I love you but not in the way you want me to" Yeah, back when I heard the demo version of this song, my first interpretation was that he was thankful that she kept him alive. But obviously did not love her back romantically. But more.. platonically.
@@boonAlina I agree! My thoughts with most greekology is more or less "NO ONE can be worse than Zeus", and even though Calypso is like a spec of how bad Zeus is. Calypso is actually kind, and even when she's forceful, can you imagine how amazing she'd be if someone who DIDN'T have a wife and wanted to be with her would feel? Lmao. What i'm trying to say is Caly's just a (wo)man who just desires love, and has no clue how to express it willingly.
It isn't just condescending. Its a whole level of "I wanted you and forcibly made it your problem instead of backing of when you said no because your wants didn't matter in my narrative, and i didn't actually feel bad about it until i got actual emotions for you so I have to say I'm sorry for all of it, but I'm not actually sorry at all and would do it again but have to pretend I am because I want you to stay. Also, don't forget that I love you and it's very important that you keep that in mind." I mean, its understandable that after being alone for so long she would be starved for companionship, but instead she went for full ownership instead. I guess her being a goddess made her feel like she had that right even though she's not in any better position, you know, being stuck there and literally only having her godhood to hold over him. But lets face it, if the genders were swapped she would be getting more hate than Antinous because while he very much wants to, he hasn't done anything yet (granted, its mostly because despite having the best status out of the suitors, there are still rules in place to stop him, though with each day they matter less and less to him, considering how thoroughly he has spit on the rules of hospitality the greeks prized, but still. Its funny how so many people feel sorry for her, but while i can understand her motivations, there are still many ways that she could have acted without further traumatizing Ody, so I don't feel sorry for her. I think her heartache is deserved because ultimately she acted on her selfishness when it came to him and didn't let up even after she did get feelings. She should have apologized way before she was told "hey, you know that guy that has been trapped with you for seven years and whose life youve had complete control over all that time? Well, he's being given the chance to leave." Because she was certain he could never leave she didn't bother before, but now she's being faced with the fact the she has been forcing ber emotions on him all this time and he now doesn't have to stay, that he has a choice now, so she's suddenly hastily trying to correct course but its far too late for that. (Sorry, i just have a gripe with her too. Sorry for the rant)
Regardless of what Calypso may or may not have done in Epic I just can't sympathize with her much. I understand that she's hurting and alone and wants to be loved but at a certain point you have to accept someone telling you "No". I feel like quite a bit of the fandom forgets that there are 7 YEARS on that island that we don't see and no matter how you slice it, that's a terrifying thought. And Athena's one line referencing his time there doesn't make Calypso seem like a great hostess. Imagine being stuck on an island for multiple years with only a powerful goddess for company knowing that if she chose to she could do anything she wanted to you. I feel like I'm in the minority but INSLY honestly made me dislike her *more* not less.
Literally I cannot agree more. No matter how ignorant or naive she is it isn’t an excuse for what she did for SEVEN years to him. Like in those years she had to know he wasn’t happy, literally tried to jump and still goes on about “the moments we had”. This entire song just feels like her last ditch effort to manipulate him, but he brings it back by saying he loves her. Which I only think he said to shut her up because clearly he feels absolutely nothing for her as seen in the animatic.
Calypso is not a innocent person maybe naive but not innocent in the slightest although she can be pity’d enough for Odysseus to lie and say “I love you” like she asked but not enough to lie and say it’s anything deeper than pity
If you like Calypso or.. Antinuos for some reason?? This is NOT the channel for you lol

Great reaction! Also I’m with you about Calypso
