I don't have a lathe so I'm not an expert, but I think it has to do with the fact that if the spin is slow, the bit won't cut well, and since the bit is stationary it would either mess up the bit or it would mess up the ring.

Thank you so much for this idea! I tried using a dremel at first but it was taking forever. However, it turns out a drill press does the trick quite nicely. I now have myself a perfect little pinky ring. I'm going to sand it and give it a black oxide finish tomorrow.

Hi, nice video! If you do the cuts before heat+oil, you get the oxidation to indents, which is a bit easier in that order. However, great end product!

  • @lokalnyork

You can blacken steel and iron by quenching it in NaOH (be careful NOT to spill it on Yourself!), I'm using 10% solution (that's about 2,5 moles per liter). It shouldn't discolor after heating, so You can have black patina + rainbow oxidation.

I already have a 7" x 14" mini Metal lathe -do you see any problems using it to make
wooden Rings along with inlays and of course Metal Rings? I can't see any issues
except lots of wood dust instead of metal shavings = more clean up.

Hey Patrick, I made one of these out of a stainless steel nut and when I did the black oxide finish the inside is fully black but there is hardly any black on the outside it is mostly just grey with a slight brown tinge. I reheated it and dipped it again but there was no difference. How come the outside won't go black? Also when my dad was heating it he had the ring in the flame, I noticed u were holding it infront of the flame, wen my dad was heating it white stuff started to form around it, could any of these reasons contribute to why the outside isn't black? And is there a way to fix it and make the outside black?
