Was There A Real Merlin? | Merlin: The Legend | Timeline

  • A look at the mythical roots in art and literature of Merlin - magician, hero and historical mystery. Merlin is the archetypal wizard, Welsh and Celtic in origin but with connections across the water in Cornwall and middle Europe, and, of course, the Arthurian legends. Clearly, Merlin is the distant relative of Dumbledore and all those weird and wonderful wizards in literature.

Hi all. I worked on this as one of the musical composers back 11 years ago I think. I can confirm the narration track is absolutely missing! This originally was a BBC Wales production and a couple of versions were made with the narration in both Welsh and English. Not sure where this version has come from! Was nice to hear some of my work again!

When dramas are sold to other countries, they usually come with a fully mixed sound track, and a "music & effects" track. The latter is used so they can easily make a foreign "dubbed" version.
Documentaries sometimes do the same, but with only the narration removed. Any speech on camera may have to be subtitled, but narration in the appropriate foreign language (or simply with an American accent) makes the programme acceptable to their viewers.
It looks like this has been uploaded with the narration free track, with neither the original English narration nor a replacement narration.

This is a fascinating documentary. there's far less talking than usual, but I liked it: we can watch the action, listen to the contributers, and come to our own conclusions. Of course it helped that I have read the works of Mary Stewart, Tolkien, etc.
The great psychological need to believe in a Merlin figure is, IMO, related to the part played by the Jungian "Sage" or "Wise Old Man" archetype, which finds expression throughout our culture.

If Gandalt is a representation of Merlin in Tolkien's works, then Merlin is devine as Gandalr is categorically described as an Angel in the lord of the rings so that's pretty much a divine being. Sorry for pointing out the obvious

This is awesome! The more I can learn about the Merlin, the better! I'm probably weird, but I'm devolted to both him and Lord Herne. I've just learned to go with it. Merlin is so many things rolled into one. I see him as one linked to that Otherworld, even though so many on this plane saw that as madness, somewhat analagous to the Holy Fool in Eastern Orthodoxy--one who is judged insane by those whose spiritual eyes do not see beyond this world, but who actually has a very strong connection to Deity and can actually be a bridge from the Otherworld to this. Thank you so much for posting this!.

Awen does not mean poetic frenzy. "Know your awen." Is a common saying amoungst Druidry practitioners. Awen means "what moves or directs you". Ie. A mind, a soul, a yearning... Etc.

There are no "Druidry practitioners". The druids are long dead, and left no legacy other than rumors heard and written by Romans. All we have today are a bunch of morons _fantasizing_ that they're "Druidry practitioners", and morons are no source of knowledge. If they say "what moves or directs you", I guess we know one thing that it doesn't mean...

I like the idea of Merlin. He may have been based on a real person, or he may be entirely a myth, but I like the idea. Much the same way Jyoti was worshiped as a god. I don't believe she was one, but I like the idea. At least Jyoti is a real person I know about. She was super cute and had a nice personality.
@ 9:47 Even when Jyoti was alive, there was a body of myth around her. People would come to her for her blessing, and she would give it. She was considered to be the reincarnation of Hanuman the monkey god in her culture. I've seen that happen with other people as well.
My point here is not to denigrate anyone. I'm more trying to point out how quickly myths and legends can grow up around some one. I have been told by some friends that I'm a magical being. A wizard in my own right. It's not true of course, and if you ask me, I'll deny it.

Any flim that shows Authur wearing plate armor, is a representation. In the 5th & 6th centuries, they had not the technology such armor. It was chainmail that was worn.
And any movie that shows 'everyone' wearing such, is false too.
    Chainmail was very expensive.
And any film that shows 'knights' wearing plate armor, and fighting standing on the ground seldom occurred, unless knocked from his horse. To b a Knight, means 'to b above,' therefore the horse.
    Hope this helps.

Merlin was born on May 1, 449. He also picked up the sword and fought with it, and he used his skills in military operations and as Arthur’s military advisor, contrary to the instruction and wishes of the Plejaren Keridwena, however without becoming morally bankrupt. Merlin also fought with his sword against the warlike Christian intruders who stole into the country through murder and arson, killing off or suppressing the population, to spread the Christian faith, conquer the land and destroy Celtic philosophy and beliefs.
After his last fight, when he was 66 years old in year 515, at the lost battle at Arfderryd, Merlin fled and settled down in a remote area in the wilderness of Caledonia in the Cheviot Hills, where he lived as Myrddin Wyllt (Merlin in the wilderness). He lived there for some time and then returned to his hometown, where an old female druid named Niniane (also known as Nimue) joined him and was a good friend to him. When he felt his death approaching, she finally accompanied Merlin on Ynys Enlli (Bardsey Island), which he had chosen as his death place. He died there in the arms of the old druid, on June 14, 542 at the age of 93, and he was buried by the wise woman in a rocky cave according to his wishes.

What absolute ahistorical nonsense. When Romano-Britain became part of the Empire the Romans were pagan, and the invading Anglo-Saxons were Germanic pagans, as were the invading Danes. It wasn't until the Normans five centuries later that the invaders were Christian.

cunobelinusX31 This is what happens when you have English hands on Welsh history. They skew or outright steal it and pass it off as their own to the entire world. Arthur was hundred percent Arthwys Ap Meurig...The Brut of England even talks about him being crowned King of Glamorgan and Gwent. Also, read a book by English Author Adrian Gilbert called 'The Blood of Avalon'. He's actually a rare Englishman, one that likes to tell the truth above everything else. The fascinating thing about any Myth (especially Arthur Legend) is the ability for people to buy into it Hook, Line and Sinker. I'm also never surprised to see and hear full grown adults who not only take part in cosplay, but actually believe they are really apart of a world that doesn't exist. To know that these ordinary people vote in modern elections, or make important decisions regarding family members end of life care, or to understand that they could be on a real jury that may decide the outcome of someone's real life may even be crazier than the fiction that they wholeheartedly embrace.

The original tales were told in pictures and poems/music and not explicitly spelled out in plain language. But was left to the perceptions of the individual to flesh out as they each saw fit. Its interesting that even today expressions of these topics are still nearly 50% with out words. This documentary is comprised of around 35mins*. of dialogue driven scenes. And approx. 23mins.* interludes of music and imagery woven throughout. I guess somethings really never do change.

And "the oak leaves" shown in the Druid drawing were that of Quercus robur (English Oak) which is ironically also the species displayed on the back side of the US dime, ironic because the species did not used to grow in the US, but does now somewhat due to 20th century introduction.

Merlin has an older stroy. He was a warrior, but saw so much blood shed. That he went into the forest in shame. Which they called him mad merlin. As he could talk to animals and and could do predictions . People went to see him for help. . He all so meet up with Tristan the bard and nimue the lady of the lake. Like a marvel, dc comic team up. It was nimue who would be downfall of merlin. Not Morgana. That came later on in the the myths and legends of merlin. Other people have said that a merlin was a title for highest druids. The Theory is that merlin would been seen at different locations hundreds miles away. Given him (and others) the power of transporting themselves over long distances. But ,hay , who really knows. Good vid.👍

DNA evidence shows that most English have ancient British DNA. Neither the Romans, Anglo Saxons, Vikings made a huge impact.
What is interesting is that many of the Norman invaders were actually Bretons who could trace ancestry back to when their forebears left Britain to move to Brittany during the Saxon invasion. They returned home as conquerors..

I think when all this was written, it was about the destiny stone. A Merlin is a missing stone from a wall to give a window. Since churches all had relics, the British were claiming a Merlin? Sword in the stone?
    .
Lancelot and Camelot are spelled to close also.

You must observe Your cat in her behavior of hunting out of the House! Cats know how easy it ist to thrill little birds like blackbirds and smaller birds living in the green around the House. They depend of this habitation. Cats are very regorousely by thrilling them dead about a long long Time and You wouldn't like each second beeing the victim. It' is better to practice with a toy on a bland and a little rod covered as a bird, but If the cat is bored the Imitation, what I think, You should become sure about the will of the cat. Making sure staying her in the House can start to stop to get off her hunting, if the Prey consists mostly in birds. That's my peace of advance to You. Don't bei feared about the cat🐓

@@gerhardthoffmann NO, no one would want to be the victim of Pokey, she is mainly a ratter, the birds tend to be alive and they fly out after hopping about the cupboards. It's the live snakes that get me, she'll drop them in the bed she will and if that doesn't give you a weird wake up, like feeling a cold zippper moving round your torso as you dream, don't know what will! She does like a good play with a fine ribbon tho, and will give her more time, she's a love and when not in hunt mode, you would never know. Just so soft and purry ~ thank you!!! chicken and all ~~
