  • In June 2018 THE MAN ENGINE came to Willington in County Durham. This is the story of that visit and of how this gentle giant awoke centuries of the region's mining heritage. A Documentary for Greater Willington Town Council.

We lived in Willington for about twelve years. For the first five years, my Dad ran the Market Hotel pub on the Main Street, leaving to join the factory workforce at Westool, in what then was West Auckland, where I was an apprentice.

Absolutely brilliant little film. I'm originally from North West Durham (Lanchester) & to have all this local history documented by the team at Lonely Tower is fantastic. Thanks for putting it out.

This is my hometown. I've also looked through many a mine record, and seen the deaths recorded. From grandads to young kids aged 4, none were immune to it.
There was one record where the grandad the son and the grandson all were killed within a few years of each other. What a life to live.
I have to add I thought that walking walking engine thing was a waste, when the money and effort could have beennused to help the town as its in severe decline now all the industry has been stolen from us.

Very interesting. Lead miners from Weardale and probably Teesdale as well.my Dad was a Teesdale lead Miner and Farmer. The lives the Coal Miners and Lead miners had very hard lives in very dangerous conditions. I also LOVE Show Of Hands

Such a shame seeing how old willington is gone, like how down jubilee park theres random walls and fenceposts just burried in bushes.
Or the old railway lines where you can still see exactly where the lines and stations were.

My great grandfather was a mason at the mine above ground.

When you think people came from all over the country to work in these mines and tolerated atrocious conditions it makes you realise just how awful and hard life was back then.

Grandfather (Jack Kell) worked Brancepeth and Oakenshaw as a blacksmith (loved him so very much) - I was brought up in Crook, been all around the world and now at age 63 (nearly 64) I find myself living in Willington and most likely above a coal seam that he worked in - i find this whole situation extremely bizarre.........in addition I have family from years ago worked Oakenshaw (Jobe Lear, who was killed aged 17)

    Hi,
I'm a musician from County Durham. I'm creating a music video for a track I've written and wondered whether you'd allow me to use a few seconds from your brilliant video.
I would credit you in the video's end credits.
I should add that I make no money from the music.
    Thanks
    John.

A real Cornish pasty what the miner's would take down the pit with them was not only their main meal as in one half of it would have jam or something like that type of filling in it
