I don't think it is terribly difficult to separate documentaries about the political affairs of China and nature / cultural documentaries about China, is it?
Of course, recent events in Xinjiang do mean there's lots of news videos about the Uyghurs. So perhaps your keyword searches are skewed. Hopefully, the Beijing government will get over this phase it is going through so that you and I can go back to enjoying what makes China interesting, right?

China endured a century of humiliation by the West & Japan. But Deng, Xiao-ping was determined China'd not be humiliated again demanding autonomy & respect. He, in fact, guided China from the 3rd world despair to the superpower in mere one generation or 30+yrs, that is truly amazing, unprecedented, unrivaled, & even incomparable in history. No question he is the architect of modern China. So I can't help feeling deference to him. Now, however, I'm sincerely in the hope China'd not turn to an aggressive & belligerent one as so many other superpower countries had been so in the past human history.!!!,,,,Totally enjoyed & highly gratified w/ this doc. to the full.,,,,,,,(09/03/22)

China has become the 2nd. powerful economic power by having superseded Japan in 2011. Now as of 2022, it is not exaggerated to say that it might have reached the position of one of the most powerful nation only to be preceded by the USA?!. Well, yes but also no because when Xinjiang was still part of China, in the 1934 the Soviet Union invaded it until in 1941, the Soviet Union gave it up back to China but then Xinjiang established some independent movement, but during the Independent movement, Xinjiang was also still under Chinese rule, so the Soviet Union technically gave Xinjiang back to China (Republic Of China). But then, we can’t forget that the Chinese civil war was still in China between the Communists and the Nationalists. Until 1949, when the Republic of China lost the civil war, the People’s Republic Of China took over the whole Mainland China including Xinjiang. During 1950s, the Communists CATEGORIZED Xinjiang as a Autonomous Region. The Land what is called “Xinjiang” is historically part of China.
Note: The land, now what is called “Xinjiang” currently, was actually originally a Buddhism land when the Han Dynasty Colonized it 2000+ years ago, Islam came in the Xinjiang when the Han Dynasty lost Xinjiang from Uzbeks. Even before the Han Dynasty colonized it, the Romans and Persians wanted to colonize it since the land was rich in materials and it was not governed just like Siberia was rich in Fur, but Russia colonized it because it was not really governed by a specific government.
