    You forgot to mention that the AoT blade is used like a box cutter , it wasn’t built to slice open a wound with it’s middle blade but to cut open a flesh with the tip of the blade , like how box cutters are used . Mainly because their main purpose are to cut chunks of flesh away , instead of cutting straight through clean , although there are instances where Mikasa literally slices Porco’s leg clean and I don’t know about that , probably had to do with the fact that she’s an Ackermann and she’s stronger than 20 adult man combined (remember when she carried like 10 steel beams by herself , during the train track building scene)

    AoT sword can be stored efficiently in the boxes beside their hips, they’re intended to break so they have to carry multiple. They also wouldn’t work if they were curved; consider the process of taking down a titan: you have to approach at an angle to prevent yourself from crashing into it (you have to have speed behind your slice or it won’t cut deep enough and you also wouldn’t want to sit on the back of a titan, so you have to do this). To cut deep enough at an angle you need a straight blade instead of a curved one, a curved blade would clear the nape (unless it was ridiculously long, which is logistically infeasible for transport and use) without killing the titan. A straight blade works perfectly in this case because the user is supposed to use their body mid flight to curve the path the swords take as they go through the nape, allowing them to exit the cut fluidly while also cutting as deep as possible with the swords length.

      @@sethmccuckins No, but its definitely misinformation. The curve in the sword doesn't really help with edge alignment. I don't know what that cardboard test is even doing.
      What it does do is change the surface area the blade has while cutting. Meaning you will get a better cut with a curved sword than you would with a straight blade. Its not that sword is lining up perfectly, but rather you have a higher margin for error.
      Just another way to think about it. Understand that when you are holding the sword, blade isn't in free fall. You are holding and if your position is off the blade won't change position to offset. If it did it would be bad blade since you can't control it.

      Any sword will deflect if your edge alignment is bad, it doesn't matter if its curved or straight. Its a matter of skill. Though where curved swords excel is the that while they are cutting they make better contact with the material. ONLY IF YOUR EDGE ALIGNMENT IS ALREADY GOOD. Yep, it only self aligns for when the force driving it is gravity. When you swing it, it's not gravity. So the center of gravity being on the edge won't help. As least according to everyone who tested it and compared it to straight blades and to more significantly curved blades.

      Well yea, the longsword is a generalist sword that does a decent job at stabing and slashing, having better reach and a big guard. Katanas are made just for slashing and are better at it but the moat important aspect is the steel type. Longswords are made from a far superior steel (mainly because they were made during different times and technologies differed a lot too). But if you just compare sword types ignoring the materials, i would go with what makes me feel more comfortable for me to wield.

      I've only watched a bit of AOT and I honestly love the swords from a design perspective.
      I think its design was used to show its a simple blade to be easily mass produced, be sharp, and easily replaceable since it has quick releases. A lot like box cutters.
      If its heavy, I don't think it'll matter much since they probably wouldn't be swinging it with their arms, but rather with the momentum from their movement gear. And it being a heavy blade would probably be helpful because they're fighting titans and it'd help slice through with weight rather than pure sharpness. Kinda like a claymore?

On the other hands, longswords used in this same sport weigh from 1,5 to 2 kg (a bit more than 3 pounds) and that's already enough to have to use both hands to wield them effectively.

    "Automatic edge alignment" and "sword is too heavy to swing often" : in AoT, "swings" are made via pulling the ENTIRE BODY with grappling hooks and gas-powered propulsion. You don't swing with your arms, you lock your arms then let the grappling hooks carry you through the cut.
    A katana takes too long to manufacture considering the high risk of breaking the blade for a misaligned "swing" that is required against a titan (there's no attacking from the ground, you'll get crushed)

    • @bragnir
      @bragnir 2 ปีที่แล้ว +49

      Gets worse, still: AOT swords are literally oversized box cutters with replaceable blades. The way they work is you cut with the tip of the blade, it breaks off when it's no longer perfectly sharp, then cut with the next tip until it's time to swap blades.
      Considering the Katana would be produced by the same society, forges and type of metal they had available for the AOT swords.... You'd get a grand total of 1-2 slices before the Katana is too worn down and slows your cuts into becoming titan chow.

      The katana is a marvel for what they had to work with, but yeah.. pour some decent metal in a mold and sharpen it a smidge and you'll get a more reliable weapon. Katana are curved so that they can maximize cut potential so they don't outright shatter.

    • @ThatPinkOtter
      @ThatPinkOtter 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Different swords from different time periods made with different material made for different purposes.
      The comparison is apples and oranges, though if we're going to talk strictly about efficacy the longsword is more versatile whilst the Katana is more nimble...
      However I fail to see why you would want a Katana instead of a dagger/buckler and an arming sword/rapier. Good ol' hand and a half sword isn't nearly as easy to maneuver as a katana is, but it has more applications than a katana, the crossguard alone does a better job of both protecting you and being used as an effective weapon in it's own right.
      And none of that matters because polearm. So y'know, there's that. Both Euro sword snobs and katana weebs are incredibly annoying and frankly really, really stupid for continuing this idiotic conversation. It's like kindergartners arguing about who's dad would beat up who.
      Oh, and I will say that for record the traditional 'longsword' has an advantage simply because of it's reach over the katana... Which is why the spear/polearm is the most dominant medieval battlefield weapon in pretty much every region. That doesn't mean both aren't formidable weapons, it just means that like it or not when you're literally fighting for your life (Though living by Bushido often meant complete disregard for your life) if you can keep people AWAY from you and threaten them at the same time it's probably better.
      Samurai wielding a Katana instead of their usual main armaments are akin to that of suicide bombers, give a meth head martial artist some speed, coke and a sword then point them at someone and tell 'em they got the goods and you have a samurai. Knights in plate with swords-- Or more likely poleaxes are more akin to the Leopard 2A7 of today. Both are terrifying, but for different reasons.

      @@ThatPinkOtter Little correction: Spears were the main force of all armies because swords were hella expensive and took ages to master, while a spear was just a pointy stick you could give to any peasant.
      Obviously in medieval history there were many effective sword techniques formulated and taught that were aimed at overcoming the reach of a polearm of any sort (and once you did they were helpless).
      In the hands of a well trained swordsman, the average soldier with a spear wouldn't have been a big challenge.

      Mate he droped both of them are an angle. He was doing it to show how the katanas shape is more effected by gravity causing it to automatically straighten out while the AOT sword doesn't. If your wondering why that's important, when you do a downward slash, the shape of the katana assists in straightening out the slice.

      @theendersmirk5851 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Counterpoint though: slashing attacks is the entire reason every curved blade ever was designed with a curve, not just the katana. A good cavalry saber also has one because you can get some nice slicing action by running the length of the blade down the surface you are cutting into. Now if you're only hitting with the tip, a pole arm might be a better go to, but for creatures this big, I know I'm not getting a kill blow first try, even if I was athletic enough to fight them. At least with a Katana or similar curved sword, a good slice might result in enough blood loss to hamper movement, or impair judgement, potentially giving me more opportunities to follow up.
