I love old English coins and l have several. But l'm portuguese and l live in Portugal. Here, on Middle Ages, we had pennies too, under the name of Dinheiros. Only they were made of billon, exactly the opposite of these ones. Only 8,3 per cent silver and the remaining copper. One side a cross, very similar to English ones and the other side the five marks of Portugal disposed in cross too. English ones are so so beautiful and all of these pieces are witnesses of History of each country.
Hi there, I found my 1st hammered coin an Edward I ? the obverse is the same as in the video inscription..on the reverse its hard to make out but civi tas ...next is too worn to read and last 3 letters look like T n R ?? any ideas on this please :)
Thank you for your comment. From the sound of it the reverse inscription could be civitas cantvr or cantor which means city of Canterbury. If you want you can send me a photo of the coin to coincollector567@gmail.com and I can have a proper look!
@@CoinCollector that makes sense canterbury mate ..it's what my mate said (his eyes are better than mine (mine are painted on lol) Its bent out of shape curved and hoping to get it straightened. Any tips on that? cheers
@@peternicholls6532 I must be honest and say that I my opinion trying to unbend hammered coins does not normally end well. Sure it does work fine sometimes but very often the coin will just snap in half. If you don't mind that happening then sure its ok. I guess it depends on quite how bent the coin is initially and the value of the coin.
@@CoinCollector thanks for the reply, it has a smooth curve and I don't see any stress lines but seeing as it's my first hammered I'll leave it as it is for now :)
I really love these coins of some of our better kings, could you please go into further detail about the definition of the 3 dots if it's no bother about the name of that symbol and what they represent, I heard that they represent the 3 Kingdoms and the holy trinity but do they signify anything else? and does this particular symbol have a name?
They are great coins. The three dots are normally called three pellets and as far as I am aware there is no universally agreed reason for what they represent. It is likely to be a combination of lots of things such as the holy trinity and the three kingdoms etc.
Do you have any silver hammered coins?
I have lots of hammered coins my favourite one is a king John Irish penny from the Dublin mint it's a lovely coin👍👍👍
Charles 1st Shilling and Elizabeth 2nd two pence.
Cool coin. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
So is their a way to know the silver purity on these old hammered 🔨 coins?
Well no easy way without scientific equipment. But they should all be fine (.99) silver from this time period.
enjoyed watching the video
Good to hear, Feel free to check out some of my other content!
That was interesting some more clues on how you identify coins would be great
I am planning on making more videos soon!
