At 2:46 You've given the example: "In my taekwondo classes, I found it difficult to spar with a partner, delivering high kicks to my opponent's head, and I couldn't always break boards." Then you said that there are 3 actions in that sentence. 1) to spar 2) to deliver high kicks 3) to break boards However, my Russian mind is telling me that there are only 2 actions ('to spar' and 'to break boards') in that expression. Because 'delivering high kicks to my opponent's head' seems like a way of sparing. It doesn't feel like some additional action... Q: How did you spar? (What method) A: I spared (by) delivering high kicks to my opponent's head. In the last version you said (3:47) "In my taekwondo classes, I found it difficult to spar with a partner, deliver high kicks to my opponent's head, and break boards." Here are 3 actions indeed. Am I wrong?
Hi. Yes, I see them as three separate actions. Sparring involves kicking and punching. So what did I find difficult? 1. sparring 2. delivering high kicks 3. breaking boards If you limit your attacks to kicks, then "sparring by kicking" makes sense.
@@Englishwithjennifer Yeah, I got the point. However, would have gotten that point your imaginary listener? I mean... That's a super lesson. We all learned a lot from it. A consistency of phrase types in sentences shows a professionalism in writing. We don't want to be jumping from a gerund phrase to a noun or adjective phrase when listing actions and activities:: In the past, I sold household items, sporting goods, luggage and then shoes. My working career has seen me selling goods, driving a taxi and then assisting students. Over the past two decades, my hobbies have included: photography, film-making, swimming, and sight-seeing. Our film reviews required a lot of time and work as we had to research, structure and then write the reviews without revealing the film's ending. Our reviews were carefully researched before being written. The art of writing tests, which should always be considered as part of a lesson, requires careful attention to detail, and should always show incorrect examples.
Hello Jennifer! Nice to see you! Thanks a lot! It was both useful and interesting. I hope I'll be able to grasp those parallel structures in oral speech as well in reading texts soon.
Hi Sergei. Yes, it's important to recognize these structures in spoken English too. You can spot some in my Oral Reading Fluency series. Then you'll hear my intonation as well.
Hi Jennifer, Please consider a very simple sentence written below. This sentence has one verb phrase written in active voice and another verb phrase written in the passive voice. Both verb phrases have a common subject. Please check and confirm whether the two verb phrases are parallel. Sentence 1: My dog Robert is loved by my parents and eats chicken.
Hi. I find the structure potentially confusing. I wouldn't recommend mixing and active and passive voice. Similarly, I would likely avoid two different aspects (simple, perfect, progressive). I'm not going to say it's incorrect, just potentially awkward. Not recommended: My dog is a Labrador and has been a wonderful family companion. Recommended: My dog is a Labrador, and she has been a wonderful family companion.

Hi Jennifer, this was a great video. I got a question though. At 9:16, you say: "I not only learned a few different dances, but I also had the opportunity to perform them." So after 'not only', you have a verb in its past form. On the other hand, after 'but also', you have a clause. That's a bit confusing. Would you mind explaining it?
Hello. Glad you liked the video. "Not only...but also" has different patterns and variations. You'll also see "not only...but as well" and "not only...but too." Take a look at additional examples: www.learnersdictionary.com/definition/only You may just see words and phrases: not only (in the city), but also (in the countryside) not only (smart), but also (beautiful) But we can use clauses as well. In that case, "also" is often placed after the subject and before/after the verb according to the usual rules: ...but I also tried something else ...but I've also tried other things ...but I was also happy to try other things

Hi Kishor. The full sentence uses "Joining a Filipino association" as the subject. When I gave the alternative, I used the pronoun "it" instead. The main thing I wanted to show is that you can use "as well as," which also calls for parallel structure.
That was an interesting lesson that I've never come a cross before Jennifer. it's rather difficult though . I'm gonna watch again and again until I master it. By the way , what's the meaning of developing a public speaking voice?
Please review. Ask questions if you have doubts. It's all about pairing ideas and combining ideas in clear ways. A public speaking voice is the voice one uses to address a group of people in a public setting. As a cheerleader, I learned how to project my voice. I can speak very loudly to a large hall or auditorium without a microphone if I have to. Public speaking requires you to speak clearly and confidently. Cheerleading helped me learn this skill.

Hello. "Doubt" requires an object. The object can be a noun clause.
(1) I doubted [that I could predict the future].
(2) I doubted [that someone would want me to do a reading for them].
We can combine the two doubts if there is parallel structure.
I doubted [that...No.1] or [that...No. 2].

I doubted that I could predict the future, and I also know that....
If there's 3 items & two of them gerunds & 1 is infinitive then how can I change this? based on number 1??
If you want to use infinitives, then use "to" once and then three base verbs:
I like to read, dance, and take walks. "To" is understood in #2 and #3.
