    The cool thing about training is that movements which appear simple are actually really involved and can be optimised.

    just discovered your excellent channel. My rowing has improved dramatically through watching and then applying what I have learnt. I'm 59 and weigh 83 kilos and did a personal best of 8.43 for 2K. But that was on 10 !!
    Cheers Dark horse.

    Darn it.
    I was hoping to secretly find, "How to slack off while rowing without losing your speed".
    No such luck.

      Sorry to disappoint although this gives us an idea for a new video title.

    You are veey good educators. All videos ive watched from you have been excellent. Although I have some rowing experience over 10 yrs ago, Im learning from you both new info but also a great way to explain things. Thanks for taking the time to create your videos. Much appreciated.

    I am going to have to give this a shot today. I get completely worn out just from the warm-ups that I'm no good come the actual workout.
    Thanks for this video!

    Thank you, this helps. In the boat, I’m often told “Alan, you are rushing the slide again”. I’m learning

    the release is not when the hands go away. it comes from when the blade is released from the water. So this means it is at the finish with a tap down...

    • @DarkHorseRowing
      @DarkHorseRowing  7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Unfortunately William our athletes are all using the erg and when we use the cue "finish" it makes non-rowers think that the stroke has an end point when in fact it does not as you know from being on the water. So release, being a synonym for finish works VERY well for new athletes to learn that they release the handle instead of holding on to it for dear life and pausing at the end of the stroke.

    ★★★★★ Outstanding, thank you so much for sharing...endurance movement...recycle momentum...and recover. Focus on what is going on with your body not the numbers on the screen. You cannot row flabby but engage the muscles. I have a flat bottom and use extra professional padding.

    Is there a discussion to be had on whether the knees should come out of extension just before the torso moves forward in the recovery?

  • @allnaturalindian

    thoughts on rowing strapless to ensure that we're not wasting energy during the drive/recovery?

    • @DarkHorseRowing
      @DarkHorseRowing  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I love it, but I just don't teach it to beginners as the implications to someone who executes it improperly are worse than the benefits to someone who gets it IMO.

    Do you consciously relax the thighs, by which I mean, zero flexation of that muscle, during the recovery? I feel like my thighs tighten and stay that way, especially at higher stroke rates. A video about conscious relaxation might be helpful.

    • @DarkHorseRowing
      @DarkHorseRowing  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      John, it's almost impossible to relax them completely but the goal is to minimize contraction when you don't need it, a la during the recovery. Does that make sense? Thank you for the video idea!

    How about with higher stroke rates, 30+? I find that I have to shoot my body back very quickly and have to really thow my arms forward in an awkward way to not get knee-bounce. Are you supposed to have a shorter catch/drive at higher stroke rates? - Chris

    Will you please reference where you got the 60-30-10 biomechanical breakdown?

    • @DarkHorseRowing
      @DarkHorseRowing  7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      If you want to follow the research, the generally accepted #'s come from (Kleshnev, 2011 in Nolte) where an official breakdown of 46, 31, 23 is given. However with the athletes we're working with, we find round numbers work best AND the predominant force production of non-rowers (the people we're trying to help) comes from a dominant arm pull. Therefore, by de-emphasizing the arms and explaining it as 10%, and giving that extra % explanation to the legs we can get an actual mechanical output whereby the athlete effectively reaches a 46% & 23% emphasis. Thanks for watching and enjoying the material!

    any tips for hydration during 25k+ rows.

    • @DarkHorseRowing
      @DarkHorseRowing  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Camelback? Ensure you have plenty fluids around you and be willing to stop and hydrate before you're feeling thirsty. Also think about having some carbohydrates and simple sugars in what you're consuming to keep feeding energy to your system.

      I fill two 750ml bottles with water and 45g total of glucose and electrolyte sports drink for rows ranging from 22km to 30km. This is for on water rowing sessions where we stop half way for a drink, where I consume a full bottle. With the other bottle: half consumed at the start and the other half at the end.

      How so Techno Cerberus? It's a cue we use to help people understand that rowing is a pushing movement not a pulling movement. Hopefully that helps?

    • @yablah7898
      @yablah7898 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You pull with your arms and back. You only push with your legs, but even when you're going back up the slide you are pulling yourself up using your hamstrings.

    • @cameronogilvie3364
      @cameronogilvie3364 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Techno Cerberus well of course, but push don't pull is an excellent cue to help people to remember to start with the legs, exactly the same as with a deadlift
