This men was 20 years old kid at the time when this is recorded !!!!!!!!!!! Listen how many parts this song have !!??? Kids of 20 years!!?? Words are not enough .
Not JT though. Even us metal head bassists knew HE was a monster! The rest of the band definitely got overshadowed by him, and I watch those early live shows on TH-cam, and they’re all really impressive
What planet have you been living on for the past 40 years.. Ive been around since they became big.. they were huge in the 80's and have been around since then... I hate when people make that complete stupid and false statement.
Yeah, when searching for great individual musicians, I don't normally look to the top 40 pop charts to find them. This is the exception to that rule. I'm actually surprised that he didnt try his hand at playing metal.
Poetry. Huge props to the drummer too playing to a click all the way through. Tight as a nat’s chuff. Straight to tape, one take, no edits. If you f&ck up you have to scrub it and start again! Pretty damn impressive.
This is by far the best & correct way to play the " Rio " bass line as it is like this & very busy & i see others do it but they miss out on the fact that they are either playing less or not playing it in the correct way as its a bass line you need to own or it'll catch up on you... This is how it was recorded for the album but i've even heard John Taylor play it less busy when i've went to see the Live as its so intense & practically no stop... If you can play your version of the " Rio " bass line that isnt as full on as this but still does the job great but if i want to hear John playing " Rio " properly id have to go back to much easier Live Gigs or play the album version as John has slightly taken his foot off the pedal when hes played this live for the last 20 years but can you blame him... How your hearing it in this upload was how John recorded it & he played it that way for thousands of live shows & now plays it at a slightly less busy version but as bassists who learned how to play this then you make up your minds on how you'd play it Live as it is a killer pulsing almost not stop bass line & one of his best from the first 3 Albums... In light of this still ongoing coronavirus and its variants stay safe and healthy wherever you are in this world... .....
John said it himself, as he got older, he wanted to simplify his basslines as Nick can do a lot of the fills through his keyboard. That prob bled into his live performances. Duran’s first 2 albums, John pretty much gave it his all cause he wanted that success and capture the hearts of fans. He was hungry like the wolf and as he progressed, I wouldn’t say he got lazy (maybe he did, maybe he didn’t, only he can answer that) but if you compare his earlier work with his later ones, you can tell he has simplified his basslines.
I've played bass for 16 years now (mid 30s) and this song always wears me out live. I can't imagine doing this every night in a list of songs like this, especially while getting older. The important thing is he still captures the feel of it even if not hitting every single ghost note that you can't hear well in the mix anyway
I’ve always appreciated Johns bass playing because he never just stayed 8n the background, he helped drive the rhythm of their songs. But I hadn’t stopped to think that the drumming was in sync and an equal part of the musical equation
@@sandramoeller7109 Well John was pretty accurrate already back in 1981 but maybe he lands just a millisecond late on the chorus after the octave slap thing.. but im not sure if this is J.T. Could be a computer.
This is pretty rad, but J5(most of Motown).. Major Tom, police..etc.. Funny, I actually learned real bass after clear channel destroyed my Band around 2004…lols.. Glad I left that TONs of Emo trash 6ft 7” under ground🤙🏻
One of the best bass lines EVER!!!
Indeed
He earned his soup.
@@chuckmos4342I was a new wave nut too, haha! Class of 85. 😉
Incredible
It absolutely is.

Words are not enough .
John and Roger were both 21 when this was recorded, turned 22 month after Rio was released.
The pinnacle of groovy AND tight.
These two, John (bass) and Roger (drums), were the backbeat of all Duran Duran's grooves. TIGHT!
It's called the rhythm section. Every band and song has one
He is a great bass player. Solid tone and super feel.
I love the middle section drop at 2:40.
Classic.
😎
Roger and John are so locked into the groove.
Duran Duran has always been underrated
Not as an act, as they were the biggest thing out there at the time, but as musicians?
Absolutely!
Not JT though.

One word: FUNK
John Taylor is so underrated as a Bass Player. Killer!!!
Not by people in the know!
This bassline is the theme to life itself…
An amazing rhythm section. They made Duran Duran what it was and still is today.
Those 16th note hi -hats!!! Smooth!!!
Check out Geddy Lee and Neil Peart for bass and a clinic on bass and drums. This was good 👍
@@batman1169 Dude was inspired by Bernard Edwards and Geddy Lee. John Taylor gave them credit for this masterpiece.
@@Bacopa68 really? was it in a liner note or something i can read up on this. cool
John and Roger!!! Smokin!!!! Hellyeah!!!!
Heck yea
JTs tribute to Entwhistle! Incredible
Wow I didnt know this bassline was so funky and well played
Too many don’t .
Then you don't know JTs playing very well. If you can fill in for Bernard in Chic, you certainly can bring the funk 😉
@@allexisberry7367 Amen. He's THE most under-rated bassist ever

Is it just me, or do the drum fills in the intro sound like they're Rototoms?

A force of a rhythm section
and I can't even spell rhythm
In this song, the bass is more melodic than the guitar parts.

This goes hard for cheesy 80's music.
So much better without all that simon caterwauling
Yes
Nah.Song is King.
His name is Guido and he drives a black Trans Am. 😂

Nowadays he plays with much more syncopation. The original sound so flat
thumbs down
If this doesn’t sound syncopated to you idk what ur on bro
this bassline is literally the definition of syncopation
