Yeah I have the same experience with Hwei. I love the champ and have been playing him a lot but I've noticed that no matter how well you play nor how much damage you do, it more often than not doesn't matter and end up losing if your team is bad. Like Ori can completely turn the tides of a game with one ulti and Syndra can instantly take out any target. Hwei doesn't have the range to compete with artillery mages like Zoe and Xerath, the damage or cooldowns to compete with Cassiopeia or Anivia nor the utility to compete with Ori or Syndra
He wants to do a little bit of everything while being bad at it since most of his influential spells are so hard to land (like his ult, EQ, QW), his only basic ability that goes through minions is his QE which is really easy to dodge, like even his EW gets blocked by minions wtf. And if you want to instaclear a wave you need to commit both your damage ability and your cc ability where most mages don't need to do all that
Maybe with the new season items it'll help a bit with him actually cleaning up? Seeing Pekin on PBE ( I know it's a bunch of random elo players), Hwei does look a lot better with the item that procs that lightning etc, not to mention just the higher ap in general. But yea, he's in a strange spot for sure. The 1 tricks will be an absolute menace though. He's no Yone, bash your head the keyboard and 0/10 power spike, but there's something about his ability to influence fights and put opponents in mid and late game that seems really stifling. It's just getting to that stage of the game and not being behind is I guess the tough part.
If I'm honest, I don't want Riot to pull the trigger and change too much with ratios, and make him an insta ban champ. Possibly the cds could use some work, because I can concede that him needing to go through multiple rotations of abilities to not just tickle champs really does require a bit more looking into. It sucks that access to his strength is so gated behind items (technically all champs are, but Hwei I feel is especially egregious - even more than a Kassadin, Veigar and other scaling champs, because his dmg comes through rotations and skill shots, not just hitting a single button).

Hwei has been my faster M7 champ in my entire 10 years playing this game. I thought Illaoi mid would never be beaten but it took me only 2 days to get it on Hwei. I feel like it is impossible to not get S- minimum on him. The EW changes just make him op

He won lane so hard because the difference in mana between the champions. Hwei is allowed to just spam because he can regen mana from one of his abilities whenever he can auto. Well he can auto because he can spam his spells to get in favorable lane states. As long as he doesn't get omegafucked by level 3 Hwei should have way more mana / poke than others in lane and its not fair.@@DannyPotato
@@eyesee5413 Hwei has absurdly high mana costs and cooldowns with mid to low damage. His strength is the variety of abilities he has, but he is in no way an OP champion. Simply because he had a good laning phase against Viktor doesn't mean he's a strong laner. He's fragile as a flower, immobile, and has very limited CC - his damage is low, his W shield is near useless, and all he can do is hoping to outsmart his opponent on his way out. If that
