I found a square 5 gallon bucket for $9 and it was shaped just like a $70 catch basin. Lid was perfect for this use too. Had a 4" hole saw on hand so I was happy.
Remember when you drill into plastic with the hole saw you always start in reverse you make your circle and then you put it to forward and that'll keep it from grabbing you'll have a perfect hole every time
A catch basin like this would probably work really well in my backyard because no one would be walking or driving over it. Chuck, it is also funny that you mentioned turning the bucket upside down and installing it that way because that is what I was thinking as well. Great idea!👍
Great video . Thanks for making it for us . If that bucket was filled with clean drainage stone would it work equally as good and never have to worry about the lid coming loses or getting brittle with sun light over time etc ?
I have done this many times the strongest part of the bucket is the bottom you put the bucket in upside down the lid is the weakest point that is why it was caving in when you drove over with the tractor it will fatigue over time. Drill holes in the bottom flip it over with the cover on and do it that way
Nice, I have an idea/question.. If you filled it up with gravel all the way to the lid, would it provide the strength to drive over it, but yet still allow water to pass through it?
Great idea. Question is how often you will go over the can lid. Only few times. Even if it breaks or cracks you can replace with a new one for few bucks.
question: does a catch basin drain or a dry well drain need to be vented for an outdoor shower? If I just use the catch basin under the shower floor and pipe it down the yard to a dry well, maybe it will not need a vent if the amount of water it will handle is not a lot. I do not live in a rainy area and not many showers will be taken back to back.. Thanks
Sure appreciate your videos! If I weren't located in the Midwest, I'd hire you in a heartbeat. It would be great if you had contacts in MO who you know are reputable, but I doubt I'm that lucky. So, would you please consider doing a video on how to select contractors, e.g. what questions to ask and what to look for to avoid getting rooked? Thanks for the consideration and keep these great videos coming, please!
I would think that after you get the thing installed that you get couple of bags of quick-crete and form up about a 30 inch square of concrete that the end result would be so much stronger and less likely to settleand easier to instal an inch or two below grade and if you really want o make the lid stronger you could attach a circle of 1/2 or 3/4 inch plywood to the underside and drill your holes thru that if you really want to go overboard a steel plate
When you have a french drain very little slope, your french drain will be deep at the end. So pop up emmiter wont work, better off with catch basin used as leeching box.
my yard needs all new grass planted - should i install my bottom yard drain now or wait till grass grows - im afraid with no grass a lot of dirt and silt will flow into it - im in pa so it is touch and go with weather
Thank you for your comment ❤You are a Great Teacher and so nice that you share all of your expertise to help people with there problems and save money if you do it yourself. I was wondering if you knew in Michigan how much they would have charged me for insulation of 300 feet of the French Drain System if I did not do it myself. ☺☺
Is there a chance that the water will fill the basin and run back toward the drain? This is what I need but that is my concern that it may not drain out of the basin fast enough if there is a heavy rain.
for someone so worried about mosquitos... you didn't fill the bucket with gravel.. so you made a perfect standing water breading ground in that bucket since the ground water level is half way up the bucket. FYI mosquitos can fit through those holes haha
Brillant! But I don't understand why catch basin is even needed. Why not just run the hose to the street? If a sump pump is put into something like this and the hose runs to the gutter, what is the point of a catch basin? I'm confused. lol.
This test is not a good one. Your back fill was spotty and on top of that, you gave it no time to firm up. You had just put it in the ground and then ran it over. Also, the bucket is most likely no UV rated and therefore would quickly become brittle. A better test would have been to completely bury it and buy a $5 inlet and a couple of $5 bags of gravel to back fill with. I am going to guess this could be done if you were willing to spend maybe $20 on it and do a little planning. This video is just misleading and not what you would think from a professional.
Love this guy. I feel happy when watching this video. He is the Bob Ross of drains.
Smart Chuck, I always was thinking of a small garbage can. I always get the popcorn ready while watching you 😂
Thanks Chris

Where did you find that $9 bucket?
This is one of the greatest things I have ever watched. Will save me so much money Lol

You can tell he loves this stuff. I’ve learned so much from him.
This is absolutely brilliant.
Love this guys energy! Thanks for the lesson sir.
My dad made something similar under a water spicket and it lasted over 40 years
Chuck, you are one of the best!! Keep going my friend!!!
Great video. I love your philosophy and your informative and cost-saving videos.
Great demo...

Love watching you work with that Florida dirt (sand) compared to this red clay in South Carolina. :)
Hear! Hear!
Thanks very much. As I couldn’t find any ready made catch basins in Australia unless ship it from US. This will be great!
Great and informative video. Thanks mate.
Great video . Thanks for making it for us .

You can’t remove the lid to clean it out.
And just don't drive a car over it.
Nice!
But if the bottom brakes or wears out you can't just buy another bottom. His method allows you to open it and replace the lid if ever needed.
Awesome catch basin idea. Thx!
Thank you for these videos. I'm learning a lot.
Nice, I have an idea/question.. If you filled it up with gravel all the way to the lid, would it provide the strength to drive over it, but yet still allow water to pass through it?
I like the idea, but you'd have to figure out how to pack the stone and keep it from going down the pipe.
Great idea. Question is how often you will go over the can lid. Only few times. Even if it breaks or cracks you can replace with a new one for few bucks.
The master at work 🙌 👌
Wow...seem easy to do it
Great job !!!
Thanks for your very good ideas !

? I thought you had to use Stone around the plastic drainage piping.
you da man, Chuck.

Hey Gregg, where are u located? Have u done anything yet?.. I’m in Springfield and would love to help u

Thumbs up``` nice testing, shows real result
The water table in Fl is crazy high!
Hello from South Carolina. For the backyard drainage, is a corrugated solid pipe used or corrugated perforated ( slits, holes)?
Perforated
Great Idea, and Nice Video! Can you make a video showing how it works in a the rain, or a downpour?
great idea!
Is it better to have a concrete or a plastic catch basin on my driveway outside my garage ?
Awesome video thanks for sharing. Would that work on a Sunk Pump? Stay well and safe my friend.
What advantages does a catch basin have over a pop-up emitter at the end of a french drain?
Catch basins let water in the system. Pop-up emitters let water out the system. Look at some of his earlier videos.
@@CS-qc7np I've seen them.
@@jimbohnenkamp5082 👍
What a great idea. I am doing this, putting rocks on the top so water can get in and the leaves from the gutter out of the pipes
When you have a french drain very little slope, your french drain will be deep at the end. So pop up emmiter wont work, better off with catch basin used as leeching box.

Drainage is always the 1st thing to go in
thank u - i will put drain in and put either straw or gravel around it to catch any silt
Should it be buried under ground or be buried flush to the ground just a centimetre or two lower ?
What a great idea.
That is a good idea .I have what you showed in the video. 🥇

The basin connect to pipes and sometimes a pump
Still better than nothing.

He drilled weep holes in the bottom
That's why he drilled weep holes in the bottom. You must have missed that part.
holy shit, I have the extra buckets stored right next to where I need the basin and I didn't think of this....I'm an idiot.
GREAT 🤑 Budget trick .... ✍️
That lid is gonna get brittle in short order, then just replace it as needed.
Great idea!! Lowe’s and Home Depot(dee-poe) are not liking you right now except for their bucket sales!!!
that lid and bucket is prob 15 bucks now lol
Those are not uv stable. I have a bunch that were exposed to the sun and they all were brittle by the end of one summer.
Brillant! But I don't understand why catch basin is even needed. Why not just run the hose to the street? If a sump pump is put into something like this and the hose runs to the gutter, what is the point of a catch basin? I'm confused. lol.
It's for surface drainage so your yard doesn't flood.
👍👍👍👍
The sun would destroy the lid in 2 years.
Yes …..the sun would probably make the plastic brittle
How do I do a ground drain for 2 bucks lol lol
✅ Ten.. 🚜 Phuii..🚚❎ 😊
Great idea, but safety first! Yall don't do what he did and use a power saw on unsecured object unless you like stiches. Very unsafe!
Those buckets will deteriorate fast in direct sun or freezing temperatures. I would just spend the money and do it right.
Freezing temperatures in Florida? I'll take my chances rather than spend $200 on a catch basin.
