Carnival in Brazil is really different in each state, this one is from São Paulo, in Rio is kinda the same (way better in my opinion) but if you go to Recife and Salvador the Carnaval in those cities are way different from Sao Paulo and Rio. We also have the street parties in every states. So, basically there are all kind of parties in each state of Brazil.

Each presentation should last at least 65 minutes and at most 82 minutes. There is a loss of 0.1 point for every minute over. The parades of São Paulo and Rio are broadcast on TV, and the presenters explain the story the school is telling and what each car, the samba's lyrics and fantasy means. ^^
Best carnival is in Recife. Lots of stages spread across the city with a great variety of free shows, since local traditional rhythms like Frevo and Maracatu to Rap or Heavy Metal artists

Ok, some background info. Carnival is a party of pagan (roman times) origin, that was absorbed by christianity and is celebrated in a big part of Europe as well as most of the ex-colonies in the Americas. (Mardi Gras in the US is carnival). Venice carnival is also very famous. They all happen in the same date. It's celebrated in a variety of ways in Brazil. It's mostly a POPULAR party, taking place in streets, in nightclubs, etc. In Rio de Janeiro, samba music started being played more and more at carnival, until carnival and samba music became somewhat the same thing (in Rio!) The popular street party BLOCKS, which are semi-organized groups which sometimes follow themes, with thousands of participants there for the party... some of these blocks started to get more and more organized... with their own bands playing samba, and really elaborate costumes, and there was a dispute between them for the best party. These semi-professional blocks became SAMBA SCHOOLS. They are almost like football clubs. They usually function inside and represent specific neighborhoods of Rio, and people from the neighborhood participate in creating all the costumes and floats. These samba schools started having separate parades, which started being televised for the whole country, since the main brazilian tv network is located in Rio. Money started flowing in leading to bigger and better parades. There are divisions and promotion and relegation, just like in football clubs/leagues. Each samba school has a set time (i think it's about 1:30 hours) to cross the entire parade avenue. They must create a specific song with lyrics and costumes AND floats, around a theme chosen for that year. Each samba school can choose it's own theme for the year. 3 days later judges will give their ratings to each samba school parade... lyrics, drum corps, synchronicity, etc, etc. The best rated school is champion. The worse ones are relegated to second division, which has less television coverage and less money. You saw the parade of the Gaviões da Fiel samba school of São Paulo city. Gaviões da Fiel is a samba school offshot of the football Club Corinthians' biggest organized supporters group. I am not sure to what level the club Corinthians itself is related to the Gaviões samba school. The São Paulo parade is much smaller than Rio's and far from being as beautiful. Rio's samba school usually are larger (with up to 5000 members in the parade) and have more money to spend on the costumes and floats.

O carnaval que vocês assistiram é de São Paulo, cada estado tem uma festa diferente. Esta por exemplo é a que aparece na TV. São várias escolas de samba com temas diferentes para cada desfile. Começa pela noite e termina na manhã do dia seguinte.

Ok, some background info.
Carnival is a party of pagan (roman times) origin, that was absorbed by christianity and is celebrated in a big part of Europe as well as most of the ex-colonies in the Americas. (Mardi Gras in the US is carnival). Venice carnival is also very famous. They all happen in the same date.
It's celebrated in a variety of ways in Brazil. It's mostly a POPULAR party, taking place in streets, in nightclubs, etc.
In Rio de Janeiro, samba music started being played more and more at carnival, until carnival and samba music became somewhat the same thing (in Rio!)
The popular street party BLOCKS, which are semi-organized groups which sometimes follow themes, with thousands of participants there for the party... some of these blocks started to get more and more organized... with their own bands playing samba, and really elaborate costumes, and there was a dispute between them for the best party.
These semi-professional blocks became SAMBA SCHOOLS. They are almost like football clubs. They usually function inside and represent specific neighborhoods of Rio, and people from the neighborhood participate in creating all the costumes and floats.
These samba schools started having separate parades, which started being televised for the whole country, since the main brazilian tv network is located in Rio. Money started flowing in leading to bigger and better parades.
There are divisions and promotion and relegation, just like in football clubs/leagues.
Each samba school has a set time (i think it's about 1:30 hours) to cross the entire parade avenue. They must create a specific song with lyrics and costumes AND floats, around a theme chosen for that year. Each samba school can choose it's own theme for the year.
3 days later judges will give their ratings to each samba school parade... lyrics, drum corps, synchronicity, etc, etc. The best rated school is champion. The worse ones are relegated to second division, which has less television coverage and less money.
You saw the parade of the Gaviões da Fiel samba school of São Paulo city. Gaviões da Fiel is a samba school offshot of the football Club Corinthians' biggest organized supporters group. I am not sure to what level the club Corinthians itself is related to the Gaviões samba school.
The São Paulo parade is much smaller than Rio's and far from being as beautiful. Rio's samba school usually are larger (with up to 5000 members in the parade) and have more money to spend on the costumes and floats.

São 4 dias de carnaval..
Geralmente começa às 10 da noite e vai até ao amanhecer.. e retorna no outro dia noite novamente...e assim nos 4 dias...
Pessoas de outros países podem sim participar...
Não são as mesmas pessoas dançando noite toda são cada grupo dança por volta de uma hora... Cada grupo tem suas fantasias e cada grupo conta a história de um pais... De uma cidade ou de uma epoca... Por isso fica difícil vcs entenderem tudo. Mas e tudo muito bonito e criativo... Porém eu amo a índia amo a cultura roupas música exatamente tudo! Bjs❤️

This is in São Paulo. It's a competition between "samba schools". Each samba school choose themes or histories to tell and they tell with costumes, this big cars e with a samba. In São Paulo we have 14 samba schools, in Rio we have 12.
