- O.K. I have to apologize to one of my subscribers. He had been emailing me and asking us to react to Nightwish's "Ghost Love Score". I put it in a file to have Reggae guy react to it. Reggae guy has been very busy so I forgot about it for a while. It finally came back to me when Rocker Lady flew in and I was searching for videos I had been saving to react to.
Man.....this one was incredible. We thoroughly enjoyed it.
We cannot wait for some more Nightwish.

Hello Old Guy & Rock Lady [ Old Guy Reactions ] ! Nightwish fan here, your musical quest summoned me.
Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! This live recording is from Wacken Open Air 2013, together with Floor Jansen [pronounced Yansen], the 3rd and present female singer of the band, in front of an 82K audience.
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [Sami Vanska was the bassist of the band starting with their 2nd studio album, he was with them until 2001. Then Marco Hietala was bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least. Then in May 2021 Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen [he also recorded the bass lines for their 1st studio album]. Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her.
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.

Nightwish is a very deep rabbit hole, where every song is different with unexpected twists and turns. Virtuoso musicians, a genius songwriter (Tuomas, the keyboard player whom many call the "metal Mozart" - writes most of their music and is a master of emotion, melody, and change-ups), and the best lead singer alive today (Floor Jansen can sing anything, from operatic highs to full metal growls) - and wait until you hear bassist Marco sing - one of the best metal voices of all time (especially when he sings harmony with Floor - it is pure gold). I don't think I can say this about any other band, but I've never heard a bad song from them (at least not live with Floor). Floor Jansen used to coach singers at Amy Lee's level. Amy is good; Floor is the standard. As for her personality, in every situation or interview I've seen her in, she's been a class act. When you are blown away by a Finnish band with a Dutch singer, headlining at a German festival, it tells how far removed the U.S. music industry is.

Evancescence is Rock and Nightwish is Metal. Fact.. Evancescence was much later than Nightwish, Amy Lee is a good singer but Floor Jansen is on a different level no disrespect to Amy Lee but I wouldn't call Evancescence under the same level on Nightwish.

Evanescence was not much later than Nightwish. Their album came out after Nightwish, but they were formed before Nightwish.
@@UnkeptCanine Actually forming a band first makes no difference. Nightwish literally had their debut album in 1998 however their were demos that went back as 1996/1997. Evancescence made their debut album in 2003 so what I said was true Nightwish was before Evancescence.

Evancescence only got popular because they were forced to do rapping in their song. Amy Lee sold her band out to be on the radio and yes if it wasn't for the rap Evancescence wouldn't got the popularity that is has now. Amy Lee said she hated the rapping but yet she loved banking from the radio. Also we are comparing two different genres here Evancescence is not metal, Nightwish is.

Great reaction guys! You two are so adorable - you were having so much fun! Yes, Rocker Lady was definitely the right person to experience this with you. I understand why Amy Lee comes to mind since that is about the closest any American listener can come to making any kind of comparison, but as you listen to more Nightwish and Floor, you'll come to understand that they are in totally different leagues. There will probably be a zillion song recommendations, but mine would be Everdream, Romanticide and Storytime to start with. Any song from this epic concert would be a winner. Enjoy the ride!

Welcome to the wonderful diverse world of Nightwish. UK Oldies Division of Nightwish army here as a new subscriber. Hope you'll keep on watching and listening. Especially their live recordings. I saw them live at Wembley in November 2022 and it was the most amazing experience. To hear more from them, I suggest you follow Gabriel's list or pick and mix from it. I have followed Nightwish for some time now and have just about every Nightwish recording, live and studio and not a single track I don't like.

Neverescence! Love it! 😂 At least 50% of people hearing Nightwish and this song for the first time make the Amy Lee comparison at the beginning of the song. By the end they realize that Floor is on a different level because she can sing every genre of music. And sing them with a powerful and pitch perfect voice. She stands head and shoulders above the rest both vocally and physically (she's a little over 6' tall). I enjoyed your reaction. That must be some good wine.😉 😊🤘

This is the rare band whose live performances are even better than their studio performances. This is the mere tip of the Nightwish iceberg. Floor commands the stage like no other woman on the planet. Well, if you are interested the time signatures 6/8, 6/8, 5/8, 6/8, then 4/4, 4/4, 3/4, 4/4 then straight 4/4. The time signatures keep changing throughout the song, but I see the waltz time after the intermezzo got you all swinging. It has 17 key changes and keeps you hooked until the end as it never resolves classically from chord V to 1 until the very end, the genius of Tuomas Holopainen the composer behind the keyboards.

i'm a little confused: is (6/8,6/8,5/8,6/8) being the compound mixed meter at the beginning?, and (4/4,4/4,3/4,4/4) the mixed meter when the guitar and bass come in? also, can let me know if the interlude and when the band starts again is in 6/8 or 5/4? [the colors i feel during those times are too similar for me to correctly identify]

The waltz timing after the intermezzo is 3/4. There are changes throughout the song and the internet is loaded with information and notation for all the instruments including an orchestra.

Welcome to Nightwish. Floor Jansen is definitely one of the best singers in the world today. At least one of the 10 best and for me among the top 3. She can sing everything from opera to rock, even a little song makes her an event.

Floor her name is derived from the Roman Goddess of Spring, Flora.
Floor Jansen is called the Valkyrie Goddess of Metal and Empathy.
Floor Jansen is a soprano, with a range of more than 4 octaves (Eb2 to F6).
She can sing from classical to belting and raspy vocals like screaming and death growls. And she's also a voice coach and teacher to boot. Plus, huge vocal nerd 😉.
Floor Jansen was the singer of the Dutch metal band After Forever from 1997 to early 2009. From 1999 she studied at the Rockacademie in Tilburg, where she graduated in 2003. She studied musical theatre and a year of opera. In addition to her activities at After Forever, she gave singing lessons. She plays guitar, piano and flute. On May 5, 2010, she presented her new band ReVamp, which was disbanded in September 2016.
From 1 October 2012 Jansen replaced Anette Olzon (Second singer of Nightwish after Tarja) as singer of Nightwish during the Imaginaerum World Tour (And she had to learn the setlist in 48h). On October 9, 2013, it was announced that she would be the group's regular new front singer. In 2015, Nightwish released the album Endless Forms Most Beautiful with Jansen as lead singer. Nightwish's second studio album with Jansen as front singer, Human. :II: Nature., was released in April 2020.

Our Metal Mozart Tuomas Holopainen (founder, leader, keyboardist, songwriter and the main composer for Nightwish)
Tuomas the keyboardist writes about 95% of Nightwish songs, music and lyrics. He also composes the music for the backing track they use. It is recorded in London with musicians from The London Philharmonics. Pip Williams helps with the orchestration. There are two London based choirs too on the backing track, the other one is a children's choir. And of course with a synth you can do a lot.
This was recorded at the 2013 Wacken (pronounced Vahken) Open Air festival in Germany in front of an audience of 82,000 people. The fiery bull head is the symbol of the festival.

Tuomas Holopainen (keyboards) is Nightwish and writing and composing these beautiful symphonic metal songs. Everyone focus on the current singer Floor Jansen but she is not Nightwish. Originally Tuomas, Emppu (the guitarist) and drummer Jukka Nevalainen (not the current one) knocked 1996 Tarja's door and asked her to sing in their band. That is how Nightwish became. Tuomas is soul of Nightwish and our metal Mozart.

Quick note, the organ looking thing is a keyboard stand inspired by the Sibelius Monument in Helsinki, Finland,. The monument is a tribute to Jean Sibelius, a famous Finish classical composer. Most of the band is Finnish and the main composer, Tuomas Holopainen, is a big fan of him. Lead singer, Floor Jansen, is Dutch. As a fellow American I get the Amy Lee/Evanescence comparison because that is the only thing we have that even comes close to Symphonic Metal. It is a really sad statement about American music that that is our only reference. The reason you haven't heard of Nightwish is because the American music business excludes any music that doesn't fit their formula. As you saw, Nightwish is huge everywhere else in the world (82,000 at this show) and routinely sells out 20,000 stadiums. I saw them live a year ago in Boston and we might have maxed out at 2500 people. Nightwish was my introduction to a whole world of incredible music that exists outside of the US. Hope you keep exploring and checkout other bands like Epica, Within Temptation, Blackbriar, Kamelot, Sabaton, Delain, Arch Enemy, Visions of Atlantis, etc.
Sad that you americans don't even know "Lana Lane" who is american, but in the end she only seemed to have success in Japan and Europe later it seems. Checkout maybe "Symphony of Angels" from her or "Eschers Staircase.
Amy Lee does not have an operatic voice, or even a classical voice; she does have a very strong voice and she's an amazing singer, but Floor is on a whole other level. If you listen to more Nightwish, you'll find less and less to compare the two.
It's always funny to see reactors hearing Nightwish for the first time. And specially this one with admiration, astonishment, humour, pleasure and glasses of wine to celebrate. There are a lot more Nightwish songs to surprise you with. And when that is done you always can listen to Floor Jansen's cover Heart's Alone. Have fun!!!
Good one. Floor the 6'1'' Siren/Angel/Valkyrie singer wasn't a full member of the band at the time she became one a few months after. Try any song from the same show Song Of Myself, Story Time, Ghost River, Nemo, Last Ride Of The Day etc.

She is our Valkyrie Goddess of Metal, and any other genre she decides to sing.
Every song is different with Nightwish but all are expertly performed by this super talented group.
They record with musicians from the London Symphany Orchestra, the London City Choir, & childrens choir.
The backing orchestral tracks are used as it is impractical and too expensive to travel with a full orchestra and choirs.

I don't consider myself a Nightwish fan like the majority of the folks you'll find here. I'm really a fan of Floor's and her solo projects, which, after seeing her solo performances from her appearance on the Dutch tv show Beste' Zangers solidified my fandom of Floor and she introduced me to Nightwish. The pipes are a prop. Behind them, he has a rock band's usual array of synthesizers and controls for the orchestral sampler. Nightwish are classified as a Symphonic Metal band. Floor Jansen is their third lead vocalist, following Tarja Tarunen and Annette Olsen, and Floor is still with them today. This was in 2013, doing a song originally recorded with Tarja in 2004.
@@user-zf9we5sn5w I strongly disagree. I had listened to the End of an Era concert years before I heard Floor with the band and did not even remember Ghost Love Score. "Phantom of the Opera", "Sleeping Sun" and " Wish I Had an Angel" are the standout songs from that show for me (Floor does an amazing job on those songs too; but, for me, those are Tarja songs--along with "Over the Hills and Far Away" and "Walking in the Air").

Greetings from Utah!🤘Great reaction! You have just watched the most reacted to video on TH-cam, and the most common gateway to the Nightwish rabbit hole. You made mention of them not being very well known. If you limit being well known to just the US, you are correct. They are from Finland (though the lead singer is Dutch) and _very_ well known in Europe and South America. They often headline at huge rock/metal festivals. This one was Wacken (pronounced Vawken) in 2013 in a little town in Germany. Wacken is one of the largest heavy metal festivals in the world. This evening, Nightwish played in front of 82,000+ people. What you saw was the 13th of a 15 song set.
Floor Jansen (pronounced Yawnsen) is the third and current lead singer of Nightwish. All the songs at this show were written for one of the previous singers. In fact, Floor wasn't even a permanent member of the band at this point, though she had been touring with them for 10 months since the band parted ways with their second singer during the North American leg of their preceding world tour. Most of the fans at the Wacken show had never seen Floor perform with Nightwish before and evidently there was a little apprehension about how it would go. But from the moment Floor stepped on stage, she owned it. And after she sang the first few notes of the show opener (Dark Chest of Wonders), she owned the crowd. The rest of the show is one of the most magical moments in music history.
You mentioned Floor's smile and connection with the audience , how she exudes "light", and seems to be such a good person. You are correct. Just search for her channel on TH-cam and you can find all sorts of wonderful videos, some of which give insight into her personal life on her farm in Sweden where she lives with her husband (drummer in Swedish heavy metal band Sabaton), her daughter Freja, and numerous pets and other animals. She also announced recently that she is expecting their second child.

I'm a little concerned that there is no one else in the whole of the USA but Amy Lee to even come close to Floor Jansen. Maybe there are more out there that are not getting air play? European and Japanese bands seem to be totally dominating rock and metal these days. I'm from UK but old enough to have loved US music in 60s, 70s. FYI....Nightwish's last Album, " Human :| : Nature " hit Double Platinum in the Netherlands. This TH-cam video, "Ghost Love Score " has 31.062 Million views on TH-cam & the record company has over 3 million subscribers. ...yes, they are extremely popular...there concerts abroad sell out all the time, and their concert here in the USA are selling out in smaller venues. The Wacken ( pronounced in German is closer to "Va'kan" in German ) Open Air Music Festival holds around 82,000 fans.

Floor stands a tad under 6-2 in bare feet, and she's wear 4 to 5 inch heels here.....audience was an intimate little gathering of 82,000......the pipes were just a facade for Tuomas's set of three different Korg keyboards.....this entire 15 song show is on both DVD and TH-cam under the title "Showtime, Storytime".....this is "Symphonic metal", not rock opera......the guys are from Finland, and she's Dutch......Floor can sing Amy Lee, and "neveressence" under the table.....Nightwish Army, South Carolina, USA....."Old Guy"; you're not that old; my first concert was as a small toddler, it was Hank Williams Sr.....I've seen Jefferson Airplane, the Grateful Dead, Jimi Hendrix, and many bands before and since....you've never Heard of Nightwish because american music and radio are dominated by minorly talented wailers and nobodies, at the behest of corporate america....Rocker Lady, check other bands; Epica, Jinjer, Amarenthe, Aeyron, Within Temptation, Kamelot, Arch Enemy, Imperial Age, Powerwolf, Orion's Reign, Sabaton, Unleash the Archers, Lords of the Trident, Suite Clarity, Shield of Wings, the Warning (3 sisters, Liliac (5 siblings.....there's a lot of metal of different genres out there, and it's all on TH-cam

Sounds like my band... this was a good one. After Rammstein "Old Guy" discovered the next European Metal elite band: Nightwish the Metal Mozarts. By the way Floor Jansen the singer of Nightwish is much more better than Evanescence particularly live. The background tracks are the London Philharmoniker. Along with Rammstein, Sabaton and Epica, Nightwish is one of the best and greatest metal bands in Europe in theese days. This concert at Wacken watched 85000 Fans.

What looks like an organ is a false front covering Tuomas' Korg synthesizers (usually two). He also uses it to stash his bottle of Nightwish wine that he drinks during the concerts. He has another false front which is GROOT from the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. Tuomas writes 95% of the music including the backing orchestra and choirs.
Really enjoyed you guys' reaction to this! I've probably watched this performance at least 100 times and I never get tired of it.
I had to laugh at your Evanesence debate, because only Americans reference that particular band, as the US music industry has managed to keep Northern European symphonic bands off the US playlists, so we never hear of the incredible music being produced elsewhere. Trust me, I love Amy Lee and the guys, but it's like comparing a Volkswagan to a Lamborghini ... Amy dreams that she can sing like Floor. Welcome to the greatest band on the planet with the greatest composer of my lifetime, including all the classical composers ... and it's a long life! Every Nightwish song is a masterpiece, and each is unique and amazing. You've never heard of them because they're from Finland, and even though they tour the US, they don't have the following due to US companies not owning a piece of them. Tuomas, the keyboardist and composer, uses the London Philharmonic and choir to record the backing tracks. Floor is Dutch, and the member who did not play on this song, Troy (Ullieann pipes, Bauzouki, guitar, whistles and vocals) is British, the rest are Finnish. Do yourself a favor and continue this musical quest, you will be forever thankful. This band is pure love and sharing, none play above the others, yet they are all virtuosos. I hope you listen to them together, but if you can't follow up timely, listen to their songs on your own. It took you this long to find them, do not deprive yourselves further. BTW - if others haven't told you, the pipes are facades ... he plays synths.

Some of the greatest bands are Rock Opera like Queen. Amy Lee is a great singer but Floor's raw power and ability to sing in any Genre and in multiple languages places her ahead of Amy. Do check out Floor Singing the Heart song Alone. Also both Nemo and How's The heart Acoustic versions Just Floor and fellow band member Troy from planet rock. You truly get a feel of her vocals.
