  • BTS is a global phenomenon, yet this is my first time watching them perform. I wanted to react to their new song with Coldplay, but then I figured I'd rather make my first time all about BTS. So here it is, my first reaction to BTS performing Butter at Global Citizen Live 2021.
Watch to see what I think. Spoiler alert: Army, I get you!
By the way. When I checked out the BTS Wikipedia page, I learned that they're also known as the Bangtan Boys. I thought that they used the acronym for Behind The Scenes, but it stands for the Korean expression "Bangtan Sonyeondan", meaning "bulletproof boy scouts". BTS was formed in 2010, and then debuted in 2013. They are 7 members, and their names are: Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V and Jungkook.
Here's the link to the full performance: • BTS Performs 'Butter' ...
And here's some info about Global Citizen Live 2021 from their own TH-cam channel: "Global Citizen Live calls for action to halt climate change and for wealthy countries to deliver on the $100B climate pledge.." Read more in the video description in the link above.
    Hope you enjoy :)
    Xx Hege

They are not just performers. They are producers, songwriters, composers. They all have experience in writing music. 3 rappers are credited almost in all their songs as songwriters. And one of them (SUGA) works as producer with other artists, including western ones such as Halsey and Coldplay

BTS always sings live. We know this because sometimes their voice cracks, they make mistakes. And they even abruptly stop singing randomly, to prove that they sing live. Even when they are dancing while singing, you can hear their voices shake slightly( they've been trained for years to sing and dance intensely at the same time). The mics are sensitive enough to hear their clothing move and their feet stomp( in more intense performances of course). Sometimes, members are ill, and they compensate by letting other vocalists support them and they admit it to their audience.
Butter is easy for them choreography-wise. BTS is known to do flips and other acrobatics, performances are very energetic and fluid.

I mean that they obviously can't broadcast real time performances to all over the world. Yes, they have a backing track but they do sing live on top of it. In PTD I did notice for example an unused mic (V) at one point but the volume of the backing track was audibly lower in comparison.

    • @kristin123a

@@imajinallthepurple It varies and we've recently seen that they do several takes for their recent "live" performances and that they are edited. Like their Jimmy Fallon, Grammy's and so on. It's all live, yet with several takes and editing. On stage it's live, but during their online concerts it was both. For example in some of the Dimple performances from 5th muster you can see both Jimin and Tae lip syncing which means the two others probably also did. The only thing this shows is that the public has become too used to pitch perfect performances. Fortunately they do still sing live during concerts as you could hear all the guy being a bit off at times during this weekends concert.

They do sometimes have a backingtrack as it can be hard to constantly sing and dance but they have been trained to do it. I mean they're musicians and performers. It's their job to be good at it. Most people will get very mad in comments about them definitely singing live, because it's hard to believe how great they are doing it. But I think there is something important to understand before accusing people who are giving it a doubt about live vocals: even when singing live, there is always a backing track and the difference between backing track recorded vocals and live vocals change in every live performance.
When I became ARMY I was also a bit confused, how do they sing so well while dancing, but after a few months of listening to their album recordings and then live performances my ears started picking up what is live and what isn't. Even being a musician myself I took some time until I could really recognize where there is a track playing in live performances and where are their live voices, because in the after production everything is blended very nicely. Now I can clearly hear all the live vocals and I can assure that they sing all the main melodies and even some adlips live. Only instrumental and some harmonies are always left for the backing track.
During the songs that have an extremely difficult choreography (like ON or Fire, Butter is pretty easy compared to those), they might turn up the main recorded melodies too up to 30-50%, but they still always sing on top of it, never lip sync. Some concerts, TV shows or award shows actually have their requirements of how much they can rely on the backing track and how much the mics are on, but they're always always on. It also helps knowing the original track really well, so when it's live, my ears instantly pick up little differences, especially in rap parts or during challenging choreo parts where we can hear a slight trembling of the voice or necklaces jingling near the mic :)
Their live performances on MTV Unplugged are very very toned down, I think you'd really like them! My favorite is Blue&Grey, their original song from the album BE 💜

No I totally agree. I have seen newer kpop groups use a backing track in a low volume to support their live singing. And that is totally fine since they are new and have a long way to go. Bts has reached to a level of perfection that they don’t need any track at this point. And when they use it , it’s pretty easy to tell like in Jimin’s serendipity chorus since it was absolutely impossible to sing with those dance moves.

Usually, artists when they do "sing and dance at the same time", only dance during the dance breaks and then stop dancing to sing or vice versa, but they are literally doing exactly.

In fact they are singing live, you can hear the boom when they pronounce a word that begins with p or that has a p, you hear their breaths, which is clearly a sign that they recorded the video singing live, logically it is pre-recorded because they could not go to the event and sing it right there for reasons of the situation we are in and because of their agendas, however, in fact they can sing and dance their songs live, for the same reason that they train for years for it and well they do not say that the practice makes perfect?
It can be seen a lot that they are singing live, BTS have always said that they do not want to deceive their audience for the same reason that they never do playback, and if they sing on a track that has some pre-recorded parts because in that part of the song the dance is too strong, they don't open their mouths, they let the track play to make us understand that the playback would never be used that way.
Jin himself for his presentation of Epiphany said that he learned the first part of the song on piano because he wanted to sing it with a live piano and he had been told that he could pretend that he played, but he said that he did not want to fool ARMY (fandom name) , so he learned to play the first part of the song on piano.
I just wanted to clarify that detail.

don't repeat rumours :)) kbs performances for example require to be pre-recorded. and they are good at that. that doesn't mean they never sing live. they do. at their concerts for example. with such performances as this one, sometimes it is live, sometimes not. when it is live, you can hear 'p' letter explosive sound into the mic. If it doesn't exist, it is pre-recorded, with a barrier between your mouth and mic. as well, if the mics are not held in hand and members are dancing and it is live, you'll notice how they try to touch them to put them in better place to sound better. when it is not live, they just do not pay attention to mic position, sometimes it wents to the nose and they just do not care about it :)
in general, you can notice when it is live in older bts performances from Jin - there was time when he couldn't control his breathing very well. if you want to spot not live performance, watch jimin, he often takes the mic from his mouth too early :)
but it is not a big deal if they are live at particular performance or not. they proved plenty of times they are great live ;) so they can allow themselves to do pre-recorded performances too.

Yes, they do use backing tracks at least some of the time, but you can hear their vocals over it. They train for years to be able to do a live show, if they couldn't sing and dance live, they would not be promoted, or even be signed. BTS has worked their butts off to get where they are. You know having perfect pitch has little to do with singing on pitch? Singing is about how you use your vocal cords and plenty with perfect pitch can't sing well at all. For him it's just an added bonus which makes him able to for example start singing songs acapella in the right pitch. Perfect pitch doesn't automatically give you perfect control over your singing. That's a different sort of talent he's got. That's also why you can hear that Jungkook also sometimes is off pitch because that's a very common thing.

To be honest, none of the English songs of BTS does justice to their talent. I think the fact that they are new to this English Pop side, the songs and beats are more on the classic side.
I would suggest you to watch their Korean songs. They cover a lot of genres. You could watch BLACK SWAN, MIC DROP, LIFE GOES ON, FIRE, ON, SPRING DAY, DOPE, I NEED YOU, FILM OUT to get different vibe from them.
Also about controversies about auto tune and pre-recorded things, they do sing all of their songs live BUT they pre record some of the adlibs or maybe some specific lines that they want to specifically highlight. This sometimes cause confusion among people who didn't watch much of their live performance about whether or not they are singing live.
Also, BTS's songs don't get copyright strike as long as you show the Intro where it says BIGHIT ENTERTAINMENT or now BIGHIT MUSIC. And remember to turn on the Caption while watching their videos if available.
Much respect for not going into this with an inbuilt prejudice. Hoping for more amazing BTS-related content from you.

And, members of BTS write and produce the music. Also the level of complex choreography, and singing impeccably while dancing. Also there is no weak link in BTS, and, none of the "one member is the star" and inside competition for attention. BTS are truly inspirational for their many service-oriented leadership qualities

Thank you for this nice reaction!! I hope you can watch other live performances of BTS to see how talented they are vocally and how amazing their songs and dance are! I'd suggest their Tiny Desk Concert (with subtitles because their lyrics are really beautiful) 💜
Also I think you might have underestimated how much of that was live but it's understandable for a first time tbh. Of course as hardcore fans (we're called A.R.M.Y!) we know the song by heart and have watched and listened to countless performances of it, as well as knowing their voices very well, and we can hear how much of it they are singing live by the way they breathe and the amount of air they use and the way their consonnants sound, but then again we might be a bit obsessed lol

I don't know if I understood the term "stems" but if you meant backing vocals, I can't really tell. But what I've noticed by watching their performances is that they use backing vocals but not as loud as their live voices. The backing vocals are used to harmonized with their own voices live. Or maybe to help them breathe at some point due to singing and dancing at the same time (but you can still hear them live and differentiate the backing vocals from their live vocals). Maybe you'd love to check their *Medley Concert Live* at Tokyo Dome or any other Medley is cool. I am not professional so I don't really know anything but I've heard from other reactors that some performances are heavily produced before uploading to TH-cam (not sure what they meant) but I can tell that the Medley Concert is LIVE live so you can feel like you were there.

They often upload behind the scenes videos of how they work with these special "live but not direct" performances. They make a few takes, recording the audio each time. Depending on the performance, they just make the whole song each time, or some do it by parts, when it has scenography changes (like this one). Then they use one complete take if they're satisfied or use one as the base and complement with the rest. But the audio is always "live" even if they mix and match. They use backing vocals if the song has lines with effects on it that can't be achieved live (some can) but they don't lipsync to it, just let the audio go. You can see an example on this song (around 2:24 in your video) , when Jin says "I melt your heart into" and the audio goes on with "two". Some of the "group vocals" and part of the adlibs on some songs are on the backing vocals (I'm guessing it's what you call stems?) too, as well as additional voices (mostly female voices) but most of it is live too.

With all the peace and love in the world:
A lot of y’all seem to be confused about what I’m saying about singing live vs. pre-recording, and I definitely was very short and messy about this in the video, so I want to clarify.
First of all - I never mean anything bad by pointing out production tools. I even say so in the video that stems are a smart choice when they’re doing physically challenging performances where singing and dancing might not be compatible.
Keep in mind that I’d never heard the original, so telling me that «you can cLeArLy hear the difference sdkdkdk» doesn’t really help.
Also, I’m talking about the group parts, not the main vocals. I wasn’t clear about that. Having 7 voices totally in pitch on each harmonic line while dancing would be challenging. Not impossible, but challenging, in a live setting if the fact is that they had one take only.
Besides, it’s totally possible to use pre-recorded versions, even of the main vocal, that differ from the studio version. Often these are mixed in a more «live-sounding way» including booms from breaths etc. A lot of artists do this, and I’m not even saying I know that’s what BTS is doing, again, this is a first reaction not an analysis.
Pre-recs can still be performed and recorded in a live setting, just not in the very moment you see on the screen. This would allow performing several takes live and using the best one, or even adding stems to the performance before publishing. So yeah.
Again, no malicious intent behind my words. All love and respect for BTS and their craft.

Hey :) I saw some of the comments and just wanted to say that obviously not all army are knowledgeable about music production & performance techniques etc (myself included) but since bts have been accused of lipsyncing a lot by Western media and people I think some of us are just very protective about hearing any kind of "accusation" in that direction and as I mentioned in my original comment I think that can just lead to misunderstandings. I don't really know what stems are either, maybe you could explain that in your next reaction? During Covid when they couldn't travel bts have done a lot of pre-recorded live shows actually (for example the BTS week on Jimmy Fallon in 2020) since the performances are broadcasted live in the US during the show and that would be like the middle of the night for them in Korea and in the behind the scenes videos we can see that they did exactly as you mentioned: they performed it live and then chose the best take to send in. I think I've actually heard this has become quite a popular method during the pandemic since a lot of performances couldn't be LIVE live.

    • @HegeOfficial
      @HegeOfficial  3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

Thank you for explaining, Lela :) It's totally understandable that fans are protective. I've also seen the other side of the internet - negative people who just label anyone and any performance "fake" or "autotuned" just because they don't like it. They create this.
I'll d my best to be as clear as possible in my videos, and maybe even make videos around vocal- and music production vocabulary to clarify.
Stems are just fragments of a recorded musical piece - it can be the drums or other instruments, backing vocals, main vocals etc. In this case I was talking about backing vocals. So stems are often used to some extent (vocal or instrumental) in live productions. They can also be used by DJs and producers to make remixes of songs etc :).
Generally, I wish people would start seeing music production and vocal processing as what they are - tools to get the sound they want :) And that processed vocals doesn't necessarily mean tuned, and that tuned isn't necessarily bad either. haha. Ok, I really need to make a video :D.
      Anyway, thanks again

@@HegeOfficial yes excactly! and since they're Asian you can imagine in which direction a lot of ugly comments on the internet go...or we as fans are all labeled hysteric teenage girls who only like bts because they're "pretty boys" since obviously they couldn't have any talent or sing live because they're not ugly and can dance? 🙄😂
but I totally get that we can be overwhelming in number and I hope the comments didn't discourage you. Because I've watched some vocal coaches react to bts I knew what you were saying but it would be awesome if you made videos like that! I think most army would really like a vocabulary breakdown or even an analysis video :)
ahh cool! thanks for letting me know, I knew about backing tracks and vocals but didn't know there was kind of an umbrella term for any kind of recorded support so to say. after you get more familiar with their voices you can easily hear (in my opinion) what's them and what's backing vocals. e.g. the second time they sing "I'll melt your heart into two" (3:57) the "two" is on the backing track whereas the part before it is live vocals.
please do! :D I think the problem is the perception of those techniques in the public. because we mostly get told production/tuning etc = cheating = that person can't sing.
      Thank you, you too! 💜

I'm laughing at the confusion about BTS singing live 😂 Please continue to react to BTS and maybe some of the behind the scenes or concert performances and I am sure you'll be able to distinguish their live vocals from prerecorded 😀💕 I'd recommend watching the Permission to Dance at the UNGA performance video and thereafter the 'bangtan bomb' for the same performance, which is like a behind the scenes at the UN on their official TH-cam, BangtanTV. Don't worry about copyright strikes with BangtanTV content.
Generally, they def use BG tracks to make their voice fuller when performing intense choreo to allow them to take a breath. They also use effects on their mics, depending on the song and performance. But they always sing live for the whole song. There was no really intense choreo here tho, speaking in comparison to some previous songs like Idol or DNA... So not really a big need to rely on other means.
Anyway, hope you're not feeling overwhelmed by army being so protective over our boys. It comes from people downplaying their actual talent and hard work for so long. You just described idol music as a whole. Nothing wrong with that. People that know the industry are usually surprised how different BTS to most (not all) of them is. There is a reason why (2019?) they once made more money than the rest of the idol industry together. They are big big. Which is why they even break Western records.
The comparison with Michael Jackson or the Beatles in some aspects is right and wrong in a lot of others. They are BTS.
Butter is easy for a reason. The biggest problem is with the English language but choreography and sound is simple... especially for them. They have dance practice videos that show some of the choreographys when you don't find live versions. A lot of their videos are very different even for Idol music. This was made for Army and pandemic struggles (it is also a light diss song) and possible because they were waiting for some decissions from others they can do nothing about. It is simple fun.
But BTS does not have a "usual" sound. They are 7 young men with different talents who each manage to shine in their own way. They have recently been made ambassadors for SK. If you are interested XCeleste has made a view introduction videos like "This is BTS" and "This is Army".
If you like it more academic bby gang mag may be to your taste. If you have lots of time "The Rise of Bangtan" is probably the best documentary out there. We also watch reactions of those but no pressure: You enjoy what you enjoy (and if you want we will explain or find you an explanation... there are some good Korean explanations for the stuff that may get lost in translation: RM is literally a genius)

@@ruthfischer7615 I guess my reaction was because of the words making sure to say in some instances "comparison to" Michael Jackson is wrong, as if could be a bad thing. When, anytime anyone could be compared to Michael Jackson as a performer, is the highest praise possible, especially given the status of certain performers, like MJ as originators, even of dance moves etc. So the dialogue that I was needing to point out is that comparison between an originator and the person they inspire AS IF EQUALS is not flattering to the originator, in this way, and more likely that is what should be clarified.

@@ruthfischer7615 pt2, my reaction also bc the mention of BTS breaking records of Michael Jackson and the Beatles is a common news-bite, yet the mention of those two also seems, to me, to diminish because again, as if the Beatles are on par with Michael Jackson. What can never be quantified is the contribution of those that created things, not just record sales. Even if the Beatles were incredible songwriters and perhaps raised the bar for songwriting at that time and if they may have ushered in a new sound

@@Lovmyself Now you are dimishing the Beatles... the viewpoint is important... for music history both are maybe equally important... maybe...
For *black* history only MJ is. (and I really hope that those A* that lie about him will stop from doing so)
I'm not an US American or a Korean. I can (and will) see everything from a different viewpoint than you (different history).
But if you think of "worth" with whatever color you apply the truth is BTS is also up there (they are not white, their language is mainly Korean and they are all about the message):
They are still widely ignored. Numbers is almost everything we can do so they will be heard instead of being pushed aside and belittled (the "White Paper Project" exists for a reason) . That aside the music industry of SK and the USA are obsessed with numbers. It is almost everything they see and you are right that that is very sad.
My point was that Michael Jackson is Michael Jackson and nothing can change that (he earned his place in history the hard way) but BTS is also BTS and no one else. The comparison shouldn't even be made and is made of ignorance for both. (They are not on the news at all in my country but because of Army's call against a certain radio moderator... who says he is now writing a book about it. I hate that my country still has so much to learn about the topic that they don't see how wrong he is and foreign media/artists were/are not on his side) (Sorry for rambling)

Their vocal prowess and ability to dance at the same time is legendary, just watch them continously do that in their 3 hr concert live. BTS is bad at lipsynching, just watch their MV's, RM cant even do his lines right even if his life depends on it, they are bad at it. NPR, room live, mtv unplugged, bbc radio, please watch and see why they are the best band in the world. And please know, their mics is always ON.

They can sing and dance at the same time, their voices aren't pre-recorded. The performance might have been pre-recorded, but their voices were live, not lip-synced. They might have a backing track to add to the performance, but part of K-Pop is they have to be able to sing and dance live at the same time. Especially, because when they release a new single, and they have a come back, there is always a comeback stage with a live performance. It's looked down upon to lip sink in South Korea, and it's required of K-Pop IDOLS to sing and dance live. They can be released from their contract for lip-syncing. Please, don't compare them to Western Standards. They do many exercises, and dance practices to be able to perform (dance and sing).

Honestly though, when I started with them I actually couldn't believe they sing live sometimes, because it sounded too good, but then I heard them just randomly singing behind the scenes or doing karaoke of random songs in their livestreams and I just gave up trying to determine anything 😂. I also don't really know much about music production though, so you might be a lot more succesfull 😂.

As you probably already know, BTS has 7 members.... they are a very close "family" and totally genuine.
The group has 3 rappers (RM, J-hope, & SUGA {aka Agust D} and 4 vocalists (Jungkook, Jin, V, & Jimin). The best way to get absorb each member's style is to dive into their solos, as well as the Rapline & Vocal line performances. Here are some suggestions. While some have MV'S, some are even better live (be sure to find ones that have subtitles cc's)
RM : Change ft. WALE mv ; Joke ; Seoul
    J-HOPE : Airplane mv ; Outro:Ego mv ; Chicken Noodle Soup mv
    Suga : Agust D self-titled mv ; Daechwita mv ; Interlude:Shadow mv
RAPLINE : Outro:Tear live at Wembley ; Ddaeng live w/ eng sub ; DDaeng live w/ end sub
Jungkook : Euphoria live ; My Time live D2 on BTS LIVE 2; Begin live
Jin : Epiphany live ; AWAKE live ; Moon live
V : Singularity mv ; Stigma live ; Inner Child live
Jimin : Serendipity live stage mix ; LIE live stage mix ; FILTER live
Vocal Line: The Truth Unknown live ; House of Cards live ; Lost Live stage mix ; Dimple live stage mix
Just for fun check out their "Ma City" live when they all just broke loose and also have the band GHOST backing them up onstage. One of my personal favorite live performances.

First, I am not a native speaker, sorry in advance if I sound "rude", I don't mean that way. Second, I just want to share with you, didn't mean to say you are wrong or what, I think you are right instead.
It's interesting to see people talk about this. In (part of) Asia kpop fandom, we talk a lot about pre-recording things. There are MR (mean only instrument no vocal at all), live AR (they will keep part of the song in the backtrack, usually it's harmony part or parts that they feel hard to sing while dancing), AR (basically the whole song that you hear in Spotify), when "pre-record" mean for the soundtrack, it means singer will record the song in the studio with breathing or record when dancing/jumping a little and make it sound LIVE, and they lip-sync during the performance, and if "pre-record" is used for the video, it means like it's not LIVE (it's a VOD).
Kpop has a really mature system doing all these soundtrack things, it's really hard to tell if the performance is real LIVE or not (I am not saying bts didn't sing live, just kpop in general, and there are still a lot of groups singing live,) the most scientific way to find out is to pull out all the soundtrack of every performance of the song, and you compare all of them and see if they are the same (or partially same), just like playing puzzle.

They are live performers. Even for pre-record, they sing live. That is live performance but via virtual streams due to covid pandemic. They do not do lip sync to dance.. They never settle for less, much less to convension. They are not just singers or performers, they are individual artists, rappers, composers (both lyrics and melodies), musical arrangers, writers and rewrites. Individually, they are genius at what they do as artists. 3 (RM, Suga and Jimin) of the 7 members have an IQ of geniuses (148, 132, 138, respectivsly). While, the other 4 are impecable artists no lesser than the 3 IQ Ayers. And, they are hard working group of artists. Read about them before reacting to BTS for it's disrespect to them to react to on their work without knowing them. Like watching an orchestra concert, opera or ballet, you've got to read excerpts before the show starts, right? Had you startes reacting 3-4 years ago, it will be understandable if you do not know them. But, Hello! BTS has surpassed the historical Billboard records of the Beatles. Butter is at No. 1 for 8 weeks at the Billboard Chart 100. The Army, their fandom, grows everyday by 0.01%, if not 0.1%. Now, you are not reacting to just an ordinary never heard of boy band. You are reacting to the most popular boy band in the globe. They took the Billboard Music Awards and American Music Awards by storm since 2017 and 2018 to date, respectively. They won as the BBMA Social Artist Awards 4 years in a row. BTS is 8 year old boy band. Your lack of information about them does not justify your lack of knowledge about them. Research first, ok? You said, you wont react on their vocals, yet you just said you understand "why they do pre-record performances." BTS do not play-safe, darling. They sold out full house Wembley in London and Rose Bowl Stadium in the US. Again, BTS is knowm for its hard core live performances.

There’s such a lot of discussion here about whether or not they are singing live. There are situations where they can’t sing live. As far as I know they have some tracks prerecorded and they can let the backing track take over if they are doing a particular movement which makes singing difficult. Watch Jimin doing a live performance of Lie and he stops singing and let’s the track take over when he is doing the difficult dance bits. If they are wearing Britneys or using hand mics then they’re singing. You were surprised to see them rapping. You’ll find that most of their songs have rap sections. Unless they are singing solo all Seven members have their special parts in a performance and as there are three rappers in the rap line you’ll get at least three sections of rap. There are four in the vocal line with rapper, J-Hope as a sub vocalist to make five. Jungkook can also rap and so can the others if you let them loose. It’s just not their specialty. Now that you’ve heard two of their songs sung all in English it’s time to venture into the Korean ones which only have some words and phrases in English. How about trying Pied Piper or Dope?

But if you'll search about bts- no no no i mean KPOP you'll know that they have to trained just like what ive said just to get on what they doing rn.;)

This is a nice performance but nothing compared to what they're actually able to do. Before covid they had 2-3 hours long concerts (2018-2019, 58 dates within 13 months), fanmeetings that were like mini concerts (8 dates in 2019) and at the end of the year they also did 20-40 minutes long performances for X many award ceremonies and they always sang live while dancing crazy hard choreographies. I'm not one of those that say that they never use backing tracks or autotune because that's just how it is and it's nothing bad but I saw them live two times and they're really phenomenal live performers :D would love to see you react to more of their stuff, especially concert performances or their ROOM LIVE. Every group trains that way. And don't get me wrong there are preformancea where they use pre recorded track, but it's usually when they want to go full force on the preformance or the company or TV Station they are dealing with work with nothing but pre recorded tracks.
