- In Kyiv they're digesting the news from Moscow that President Putin will sign the annexation papers of a chunk of Ukraine the size of Greece, occupied in the war. (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
And this will happen tomorrow, earlier than expected in line with a ceremony on Red Square.
This violent redrawing of the map of Europe is of course rejected by Kyiv and Western governments.
It is also accompanied by threats from the Kremlin that any attacks on this newly annexed territory will be treated as an attack on Russia itself. NATO and Russia are not at war with each other.
But judging from the rhetoric inside Russia it sometimes feels as if they already are.

Just a tiny reminder from history. When WW2 stared, Russia invaded Poland under the pretext that it had to protect Russian population living in Poland from the Germ invasion (obviously they had a Ribbentrop-Molotov pact beforehand). So as the saying goes "history doesn't repeat itself, but it rhymes"

Imagine if that's how it worked on on sid Meier's civilization IV. You invade a country, start a war, prematurely lose all your units, threaten nuclear attack even though your bomber is too many tiles away, and instead of razing a city you just sign a piece of paper saying you've annexed it. The Russian Federation has violated the UN Charter, and it is obvious that they will not abide by its principles. Therefore, at this time, a vote should be held on the exclusion of the Russian Federation from the UN. With the Russian Federation vote, if entered, is vetoed.
The UN charter guarantees self-determination. The Donbas just did that, just as they have voted pro-Russian for decades.

No one recognizes the annexation not his allies and not even his own people.
Problem is this adds loopholes for the Russian government. My theory is they did this to give themselves access to those "all weapons available" (cough cough tactical nuclear weapons) on Ukrainian soldiers and have an excuse of "It was on my land, so I had the right!" I get it's a big stretch, but if Putin is willing to violate treaty after treaty like he's Hitler Jr, then I doubt he'll honor the nuclear treaties much longer with how he's acting.

The Nazi regime in Kiev & the conflict with Russia is nothing like the situation we have between Ireland and Britain, they have waged war for 8 years on their own people for the right to persecute ethnic Russian. @@countdebleauchamp Actually the invasion started when in 2014 the USA carried out a coup that ousted the then democratically elected Ukrainian govt and installed the now puppet regime. Since 2014 Ukraine had been shelling the people in the Donbass killing around 14,000 Russian speaking people. Channel 4 won't tell you that! Russia's intervention is wholly legally justified. Far more justified than the invasion of the 50 or so countries the US has invaded since ww2. Far more justified than Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Kosovo etc.

Here we have a miracle happened. The human rights organization Amnesty International has recognized that Ukraine is fighting as terrorists, violating international humanitarian law. The absolutely pro-Western NPO, which was not noticed in sympathy for Russia, suddenly saw the light. Why all of a sudden?
Surprisingly, the Amnesty International report in some places is similar to the daily reports of the Russian Ministry of Defense, which constantly talks about the placement of positions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in residential buildings where an ordinary family lives through the wall, in hospitals, schools and other civilian facilities, trenches are being dug right on the playground between residential high-rise buildings, but the tank leaned closely against the wall of a residential high-rise building, but the multiple launch rocket systems were located at the school stadium. And so it is in all cities. Now let's remember the city of Mariupol, when the columns of refugees in cars were not let out of the city by the Ukrainian military turning back. I counted 12 such videos, possibly more. In addition, this process of forced reversal of a column of cars with refugees was well filmed by a drone from above. They explained this by concern that it was no longer safe there, although everything was calm there. And here is a night shot of how the Ukrainian military did not let anyone out of the city, and then one car decided to break through, gave full throttle and tried to drive past the checkpoint at speed. The Ukrainian military immediately began to fire furiously after him. That is, they lied that it was no longer safe there. They need a human shield of children and women in the city. They do not consider this population of the Southeast to be true Ukrainians, but half Russian and not trustworthy, not fully sharing the idea of nationalism and a mono-ethnic state, they can not be pitied. For example, conscription to the front is mostly carried out from the southeastern Russian regions of Ukraine - these are the lands of the Russian empire with a Russian-speaking population, while people from the western regions of Ukraine are not touched - there are true Ukrainian Nazis and they need to be protected. The task is to utilize the Russian speakers, to anger their families against Russia because of the mass death of their sons and husbands at the front.
So, the employees of the organization visited 29 schools in the southeastern part of Ukraine and found either the personnel of the Armed Forces of Ukraine or Ukrainian military equipment and weapons in 22 of them. For example, in Bakhmut, a local university was used as a base. Amnesty International Secretary General Agnes Kallamar said her staff had documented attacks by the Ukrainian army from residential buildings in 19 cities in various regions, including the Kharkiv and Mykolaiv regions and Donbass. The report states that the Armed Forces of Ukraine, when placing positions, do not evacuate from neighboring buildings in order to minimize the loss of civilians in the event of a possible retaliatory strike.
Agnes Callamard noted: “Being on the defensive does not exempt the Ukrainian military from respecting international humanitarian law.”
But this is the use of civilians as a human shield - an absolutely terrorist tactic.
Of course, Amnesty International stipulated that "these violations do not justify the Russian Federation."
It is clear that the Amnesty International report is not a legal document. And the opinion of this organization changes quite easily. Suffice it to recall the story of the Berlin patient - Navalny. After studying his biography, human rights activists in February 2021 revoked his status as a “prisoner of conscience” - well, what kind of conscience does a person with such views have, they say. And in May, under liberal pressure, they returned it.
So it is possible that even now Amnesty International will be forced to admit its "mistake" - Russian liberals have already started swearing (obscene) and deleting the organization from the handshakes.
It works. For example, a Swedish TV channel was almost immediately forced to apologize for a story in which they showed the joy of Kherson residents receiving Russian passports.
But. Both this Swedish story and the Amnesty International report are harbingers of Western public opinion being prepared for Ukraine's "drain". These are the first shoots of truth breaking through the dead (but so smooth, modern, comfortable, attractive) asphalt of liberal lies. Folk are analysing Russia's likelyhood of using nukes in the light of an American response, but I imagine other nuclear powers like China, India, France, Britain etc. won't be too pleased either....

They can't use any nuclear weapon. Nuclear is basically the ultimate tool you use when someone is close to your capital. It is the last resort. If one country uses it, them it defies all the other countries that have it and put in jeopardy their dissuasive power. So if they just open a silo or get a small bomb moving, all missiles from all countries with nuclear power will be targetting moscow.
China has already told Putin that a nuclear strike is a step too far... he will lose Chinese support, and that he will not risk. Perhaps some nuclear weapons need to be transferred to Ukraine.... and Ukraine then threatens to nuke Moscow if Putin doesn't withdraw. Perhaps, Ukraine should hold a referendum claiming that the whole of Russia is Ukrainian territory... either way, the results are the same.

Just before aggression against Georgia Putin said that "war with Georgia is unthinkable". Before annexing Krimea, answering about journalist question will Russia attack Ukraine, Putin said "such idea is dog's junk" (medals "for the liberating Krimea" were already made), before the 2022 Kreml demanded apologizes from British government cause they said Putin is ready to attack Ukraine on broad scale. When Russians attacked, Putin said that "Russia will never annex any part of Ukraine!".
Just listen to Putin closely enough and you will always know what is his next move going to be …

I don't think it's about square kilometres of territory. He wants Eastern Ukraine as a buffer zone between Russia and NATO. Also, Russia can not afford to lose the naval base at Sebastopol. Russia has had a base there for centuries, and the loss of that base alone would sink Putin's reputation and popularity, and possibly trigger a coup against him (hopefully).
A long range himars could hit most of the way to Moscow from the northern borders of Ukraine proper. Also, Eastern Ukraine is full of weapons manufacturing facilities. Ukraine, before 2014 was 8th largest weapons exporter on Earth. Russia was one of their biggest customers, air to air missiles (about half of the Russian supply), engines for Russian helicopters and jets, steel for about 1/3 of Russian tanks comes from Donbas, and the real doozy to think about, the guidance system for the Russian SS20 ICBM.
