    People need to stop blaming Nelson for his death. First of all, captains and admirals were expected to wear dress uniforms and decorations in battle. Second, the relatively primitive longarms of the day meant that hitting a specific person on the deck was pure luck.

    • @Oligodendrocyte139
      @Oligodendrocyte139 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +12

      Nelson was hit from about 50 feet which was well within accurate range, e.g. "Muskets of the 16th to 19th centuries were accurate enough to hit a target of 50 cm (20 in) in diameter at a distance of 100 m (330 ft)", (Wikipedia).

      @@Oligodendrocyte139 Distance wasn't my primary concern. The uncertain delay between the trigger pull and detonation, multiplied by the constant motion of the two ships, made hitting anything difficult.

    • @Oligodendrocyte139
      @Oligodendrocyte139 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      @roberthudson1959 At the time Nelson was hit there were 4 ships tangled together "as compact a tier as though they had been moored together" so the relative movement may not have been as much as you are expecting. As to the variable delay, that is certainly true but perhaps not as much of an issue when an experienced musketeer was firing at a relatively stationary target.

      Red was high-fashion too... lot's of ways to cry out 'Here I am, do your worst'. I'm confident that Nelson wouldn't have done the calculations but, in the 21stC, only high-ranking Russian officers seem to have a comparable lack of situational awareness.

    Did men wear ties very often in the early 19th century?

    • @Pobsta-de7hb
      @Pobsta-de7hb 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      Yes very much so, actually the 19th century marked a period of significant evolution in men’s ties. From the intricate and formal cravats to the more practical neckties, bow ties, and Ascot ties, these reflected the changing fashion tastes and trends of the time. Ties were an essential part of mens fashion during the 19th Century and typically made from silk, satin, or wool, and were tied using the four-in-hand knot, a far simpler and more practical option compared to the elaborate knots of the cravat.
      In short, yes, of course later on in the 19th Century the design went even further in evolution but neck ties and so on began right at the beginning. Pretty funny really considering I went to school in the 90s and none of us wanted or wore the ties they gave us. You were "sad" if you wore your tie properly lol We used to pick the cotton out of the coloured stripes so they were black, cant rememeber what it was called doing, but that meant you were cool, if your tie looked stupid and messed up lol

      @@Oligodendrocyte139 hehe, it is strange. I have moved to Germany and do you know, most people where I live here anyway have never heard of a school uniform and never even knew we wore them in the UK. They also argue and do not understand why we wear them, they simply go to school in what ever they like here. Same with places like offices and even appointments I go to, they are wearing jeans and t shirts, to be honest as much as I think some things are silly, I like schools having their uniforms and people in offices and when you go to appointments wearing proper clothing.
      My wife is German so I can get myself in a ton of trouble but between us, they argue many things and are so wrong lol. I better stop, the list is endless and I will get carried away otherwise lol
      I can drive to work as fast as I possibly want and totally legally though which is fun.. So it is not all weird and wrong here lol
      As for uniforms, yea I guess things were stricter back in your day, mind you there was a small gap between say the early 90s to early 2000s when kids went off the rails, that was my time lol. Now days kids are so different still. I guess it is because I am older and have my own kids now, all be it pretty grown up. I just like it when you see a load of kids out on a trip or something and they all have the same uniform and look smart, I am happy we have them in the UK anyway. Ties n all !

On that occasion, unknown to me beforehand, they were filming an episode on Antiques Roadshow. I watched various items being assessed and a bit of Fiona Bruces ‘to camera’ being filmed. The amount of clamouring to be on film by the public was unreal. I was only interested in the items so was happy to stand behind the cameraman or to the side. One thing I did think was nice was that Fiona Bruces stopped the filming to ask if two little girls wanted to come over and be in shot beside her. Thought that was a nice thing to do for two kids.
