- I’ve been waiting a long time to talk about this lovely lady. Brightheart is a fan favorite for a lot of people, and unlike several of my favorites she has a lot of good canon material to be proud of. That said, I never felt like it went quite far enough, and I have my own ideas of how to finish her hanging character arc.

Honestly it still makes me feel icky how after Jaypaw swapped with Hollypaw to become a medicine cat, and they didn't give Hollypaw to Brightheart, Firestar was just talking about how Brightheart is like abby other warrior but only gives her a blind apprentice? I'm not saying Jaypaw is incompetent but it's an insult to both him and Brightheart

People say Firestar is amazing, this is one of my reasons for thinking he’s okay. This is why I skipped the first two series's
I think the entire fandom agrees that Hollypaw shouldve been given to Brightheart after Jaypaw went to Leafpool. It sounds convinient and just makes sense. Sorry Brackenfur but your sister deserved it more than you

Plus, I just don't think Brackenfur was a fitting choice as her mentor. One thing I've noticed when it comes to this series is that mentors and apprentices usually share something in common. In this case, Brightheart and Hollypaw were both warriors with medicine cat experiences.

I love how Brightheart is one of the ONLY WARRIORS that is able to actually help with wounds/illnesses without relying on the medicine cats exclusively. It’s stupid that none of the warriors know how to treat wounds to at least stabilize injured cats on the battlefield or in other situations where they cannot immediately find a medicine cat. Not only does having a more diverse skill set lead to more varied relationships/friendships/character development, but it’s also just practical? Gone are the days where a warrior has to hunt down a medicine cat immediately after a cat is hurt, they can stabilize the injured cat instead of wasting valuable time sitting on their paws and doing nothing!
Brightheart deserved a whole arc and a half just for herself tbh-

I vividly remember when Jayfeather yelled at Brightheart for being pregnant. It wasn’t a cool thing for Jayfeather to do but it was kind of really funny out of context. Like- “remember when Jayfeather yelled at a pregnant woman? Good times”
I always thought that Brightheart only went with Swiftpaw so that he wouldn't be alone facing the dogs
I've always felt a personal connection to Brightheart, ever since I was a child - we both had our faces torn up by dogs, and we both struggled with self-worth afterward. She's one of those characters I always look for in the books, to see how she's doing. I'm glad she's an elder now but she definitely did not get the appreciation she deserved, and I'll probably sob quietly when she dies unceremoniously between arcs.
In my AU series, her first apprentice is Sun, a Tribe cat that wants to join the Clans during the second arc! I can't help but show her a little extra favor :)

DEAR JESUS HOW DID I NOW JUST REALIZE THIS SHIT-
i am re-reading arc 1 currently and it really icks me how when SHE got injured and SHE saw swiftpaw die and SHE is ostracized by everyone and SHE is given an ableist name - the focus lies more on how sweet cloudtail is, caring for her "despite" the way she looks which in itself implies that her worth would be tied to her appearance
so the bond they share is more about cloudtail's great characteristics rather than about her recovery and what she is like
That's not even the whole, other xats also have demeaning names like Deadfoot, Halftail, One eye (formerly dappletail) and even a LEADER, Crookedstar. Proof that it's not just one clan doing this
@@Diamondr11Blue exactly!!! currently im also reading crookedstar's promise (for the first time) and even though i obviously could see the ableism in the name already all this time, seeing how riverclan treats a LITERAL BABY like this hammers it in even more
@@Diamondr11Blue Well Crookedstar being named that way is shown as morally wrong in his super edition, unlike for deadfoot, halftail and one eye, and he's the pov character instead of being a side-character that's there to make another side-character look better, like brightheart.
At least her medicine training paid off in some small way in The Broken Code, when she helped Bristlefrost with her injuries after Jayfeather and Alderheart were exiled. I was really surprised the authors remembered that about her.
The Erins giving Hollypaw to Brackenfur is extra stupid when you consider how Brightheart being specifically Hollypaw’s mentor could’ve tied in later. Hollyleaf could’ve learned to navigate the dark tunnels from what she learned from Brightheart about fighting with less vision. This is literally referenced later when Hollyleaf trains ThunderClan to battle in the tunnels in Omen of the stars. She even calls upon Brightheart to share what she knows
I'm only on book 2 of Paws of Stars but I already love the changes you're making to Brighthearts character! It always bothered me that she never got another chance to mentor when the book called it out so blatantly that she would
I would understand her dependence on Cloudtail if it was part of her story getting over that. But when she's pushed into the medicine den (as many disabled cats are) as soon as Cloudtail's not with her rubs me the wrong way.
We need a super edition of that starts from how she lost her eye and skips time to time to how life was being half blind. Then make her get out that shadow that's been over and say "Hey! I'm a warrior to so start treating me like one!"
Brightheart has always been one of my favorite characters, I loved to see her finally overcome her injury with Cloudtail and I kind of shipped them from the beginning of their relationship and I loved to see that develop.
Oooh Brightheart. I heard you mentioning her and Cloudtail's relationship in a bunch of your other videos so I'm glad you see you talking about it with more focus here.
Cloudtail up until then was just firestar's bratty little nephew, but thanks to brightheart, he really got great character development. She also helped keep swifty's memory alive, and I still ship them. Just an overall great character, not sure I could say anything bad about her.
I love Brightheart she’s always been one of my favs! She doesn’t get much recognition nowadays and it’s nice to hear someone talk about her!
I love Brightheart so much! She deserved way more credit, and Icepaw should have been her first true apprentice. Great video Sunnyfall! Keep up the good work! 🐺

I have always really liked Brightheart, especially when I was little reading these books. I’m glad you went in depth with her and I completely agree that she could have gotten a better ending

OMG! Brilliant video for starters! Secondly, I just finished reading all the current books in Paws of Stars, and danggggggg! I am so in love with this version of Warriors, you should totally try doing the rest of the series ( Although I understand that might be a bit of a challenge )! I want to talk about it more, but I don't wanna spoil so I guess I'll just say thank you for the Brightheart situation in Fading Light ( I think it's that one haha )!
I agree with most of what you said, but there is one thing I want to mention. I believe that Bright and Cloud both had started to develop romantic feelings by the end of Rising Storm, rather than it happening in Path.
Not only because of Cinderpelt's comment that Cloudtail had "padded after her for a season", but also due to a scene in Rising Storm.
Cloudpaw is ordered to go rest after having worked all day, and when he does he walks up to Brightpaw and we see her begin to lick Cloudtail clean as he quickly drifts off to sleep. Fireheart assumes they're just friends, but I believe that they have at least started developing romantic feelings at that point (though whether or not they themselves have realised it I cannot say).
I always felt that the issue between Jaypaw and Brightheart was that Jaypaw wanted to be treated like all the other apprentices and the Brightheart of POT just didn’t do that. She immediately put him to work in the Elders den, cleaning out moss. But the Brightheart of NP or even PB wouldn’t have done that given she KNOWS what it’s like to be treated differently. She would’ve taken him out and treated him like any other apprentice. I think she could’ve made Jaypaw into a good warrior if the writers had actually given her a chance. I also think that’s why Firestar gave Jaypaw to Brightheart, because he knew she would understand what it was like to be treated differently because of a disability. She could teach him things no one else could. Justice for Brightheart, she deserved another apprentice after Starclan stole hers!
This is exactly why I made Brightheart Squirrelstar's deputy in my rewrite. She also is particularly good at training apprentices, having trained three of them . She's also seen as a quite powerful cat within the clans. In my rewrite she had three apprenticed: Brickfur (an OC), Berrynose, and Toadpaw. she's a great mentor and I plan on exploring her a lot more in the omen of the Stars rewrite.
She has a very strong, loyal, and even terrifying reputations amongst the clans as a cat who fought dogs and not only survived, but went on to become deputy of the clan she fought so fiercely to protect. sure, she does, of coruse, hang out with Clpudfether (Cloudtail in ym rewrite hwose a medicien cat and therefore, a forbidden mate and gives them both breathing room form each other) and her daughter Whitewing, but jsut like those tow, she has her own idneity outside of her family.
Hoenstly, she's one of my favorite charcters to write, filled with hidden dephths I'm going to be exploring a lot more in ym rewrite, where her appreentice, Ivypaw, will be a POV cat

My AU isn’t quite that nice to her, but she does get to train Jaypaw all the way to his warrior ceremony (Cinderpelt survives the badger attack and Leafpool gets to stay a medicine cat despite everyone knowing about the Three). I’ll tell you this, her injury actually comes full circle in the anthro version of the story.
I always loed Brightheart, she is adorable and sweet, and I feel like she could have done much more for her clan by becoming a medicine cat!

brighthear is my second favourite character with my first being briarlight ty for making a video on her i wish she got more spotlight she is a strong independant she cat whats not to like about her :)
I feel like part of the issue with Jaypaw and Brightheart was that Jay got jealous that while other apprentices got to go out into the forest with their mentors as soon as they were apprenticed, he was put to work in the Elders den. I don’t think the Brightheart we knew before POT would’ve done that, she would’ve taken him out to prepare him and see what he could do, not make him do apprentice duties right away. She was a great mentor when they actually let her BE a mentor to him. I don’t think she could’ve trained Hollypaw, but Icepaw would’ve been a great apprentice for her or even Blossompaw later on.

They could have done so much more with Brightheart. But in a way I'm glad the writers didn't do as much because they might have handled it poorly.
So, I loved Brightheart.
As a character and anything else.
I also like your idea that she get some leadership status, and get the chance to be more independent.
I liked the limited representation of disabled cats in the series.
Deadfoot as deputy made me angry everytime I thought about how Cinderpaw was forced to become a medicine cat.
WindClan aren't stupid - they knew that even a cat with a twisted paw could still become amazing.
In my stories, I wrote a cat into my ShadowClan, who was called Leafstorm. She was a tortoiseshell-and-white tabby she-cat with green eyes. She grows, becomes a warrior, and even finds out that she is being crushed on by my ShadowClan prophecy cat, Hailstorm (a great, white tom with deep blue eyes, who is very level-headed). They realize they're compatible and decide to become mates without any of the common warrior cats drama over love, because I honestly can't stand any of it.
They have kits, who grow up and get their apprenticeships, before a tragedy takes their current deputy away from them. Every cat thinks that Snowstorm (Hailstorm's father) is the obvious choice for deputy. But instead, the leader Snailstar, gives the position to Hailstorm. This of course, was part of the prophecy.
Well, then they're dealing with a boatload of rogues, who are deliberately trying to kill off the Clans. These are supposedly descendants of the "warriors" of BloodClan, coming to take revenge on the Clans for what they did to them all those seasons ago.
So in a fight defending their borders from some of these rogues, Snailstar is killed, and Hailstorm takes up mantle as leader of ShadowClan.
He considers Leafstorm as deputy for a brief moment, before every older cat in the Clan pressures him into giving the position to his father, Snowstorm.
Leafstorm (please don't hate me; storm was my favorite suffix for warriors and I had a number of other storm cats because of it) is caught in a fox trap, which causes her to lose her left foreleg - the whole thing.
She has a very rough recovery. Worse, Hailstar can't focus all of his attention on her like he wants to, because he has a Clan to lead.
But when several of the older cats begin trying to pressure him into "renaming" Leafstorm, he all but loses it. He calls the Clan together - it is his first meeting since the accident that Leafstorm can attend - and he lets them have it, concerning his strength as a leader. His father sits beside his platform, staring out coldly at the Clan, as if daring them to speak against the leader.
Hailstar brings justice to any cat who suggested that noble Leafstorm (who has trained two apprentices, helped in the medicine den when the medicine cat was sick from greencough, and has been a truly loyal warrior, even adding three more warriors to the Clan) was worth less because of an injury, punishing them with apprentice duties, or banning them from the next Gathering. Meanwhile, he helps Leafstorm to regain balance, fight with three legs, and hunt as well, asking her to teach what she knows to every cat, in case this happens again.
At first, very few cats like it.
But then the rogues attack again, taking a pair of apprentices, a queen, and two young warriors out, while also killing Hailstar for the first time, and putting Snowstorm in the medicine den all but indefinitely.
One cat they can't manage to do much to, is noble Leafstorm. She stands in front of the nursery after the queen guarding it is killed. Then, she kills one of the rogues for underestimating her and thinking she'd be an easy kill so he could get into the nursery and wreak havoc there. She is relatively unharmed from the battle, and after helping to bury her Clanmates, Hailstar performs the naming ritual before moonhigh, giving her the position, after Snowstorm finally succumbs to his injuries.
Because of the whole prejudice thing, there's some disbelief and objection. But Hailstar very quickly shuts it down, and Leafstorm proves to every cat that she is worthy of this position.
Unfortunately, she never gets to become leader, since the story I'm working on now sees Hailstar as the leader still after 14 years (I'm part of the problem, I'm sorry!!!) and Leafstorm retires to the elders den before this new story sees her promotion.
But she was seen as one of the highest ranking authorities in the Clan, and could flawlessly take command in the midst of sickness, if Hailstar fell ill.
Hailstar is going to die shortly, but Leafstorm is still alive in the elders den. She probably won't be too far behind him.
So i’ll say 1 thing. Maybe i’m wrong, but i re-read these early last year.
In specifically Arc 1, books 5 & 6. Brightheart kinda becomes very quiet, nervous, mentally unwell. Not like bluestar mentally unwell. But in a dark place. She is somewhat unresponsive at times after the dog attack. And i just feel that Cloudtail’s bolder/brash nature. He chose to speak up for her because either she didn’t feel well enough to speak, didn’t want to, was shy/quiet for some reason.
I’m not 100% sure how to say what i’m getting at. But i do know what it’s like to be the nervous 1 who would rather others speak for me, or to be the one who steps up when needed to speak for another who doesn’t want to speak up.
I love BrightHeart! She’s my second favorite favorite character close after RavenPaw for a similar reason all I wanted for them was a happy ending and I think they both got it! 🐈❤️🐈⬛❤️🐾

Everything about early Power of Three Brightheart is why I give her the new fourth protagonist as a replacement for Jaypaw after the role switch.
Cloudtail being near Daisy was a domino affect Brightheart felt horrible and helped in the medicine den and Leafpaw felt uneeded CLOUDTAIL HOW DARE YOU! (I actually really like Cloudtail as a chareter)
you should maybe redo this cuz she is a elder in the new book 'sky' and probably in the newly released book 'shadow' (i don't have shadow)

I hate hollyleaf she’s honestly the worst character other than yellow ang in my opinion I mean she use to be my favorite when all I knew warrior cats were was just cats and I only knew her the only reason I hate her so much is that she killed my other favorite character ashfur
