      Hamsadhvani (meaning Sound of Swans) also spelled as Hansadhwani, is a rāga in Carnatic music (musical scale of Carnatic tradition of Indian classical music). It is an audava rāgam (or owdava rāga, meaning pentatonic scale).

      In classical ragas, there are no lyrics, we have to appreciate just the 7 swaras,( sounds) sa, re ga ma ,pa , dha , ni ,sa

    Attempt to translate the initial speech.
    {It seems like, this is the second part of a concert-where, this commentary is being given after playing the first part - in a particular *raag* - translator}
    Come, after playing *Raag Jog*, I want to share some thoughts with you.
    BTW, I would like to inform you at the outset that in our Indian culture we have two classical forms of music- one is the *hindustaani* music, and the other is the *kaarnaatik* music. You will find this only in India. There is no other place which has two different classical music forms.
    And today, in this programme, I have taken two *Raags* (raag - roughly translates to ~ allowed tones/order for the specific musical scale). The first one was *Raag Jog* - which is more popular in *hindustani* music. And the second one we are going to play is more popular in southern India (in *kaarnatik* music)- whose name is *Hansadhwani* (literally, sound of swan).
    Apart from this, I will also share, for your information, about my own childhood. That, I wasn’t born as a *baansuri* player (*baansuri* Indian flute - used in the *Hindustani* style). As I grew up, I started to learn vocal music in the beginning. And, then during singing, sometimes I used to sing *bhajans* (devotional song), and sometimes film songs. I used to listen to big musicians (*ustaad* - usually referred to musical master) and sing their compositions. I tried learning vocal music for about 2-3 years. In my family nobody had interest in music/singing. My father was a wrestler. And he used to tell me, “son, you also play wrestling with me”.. He used to take me to the gym (*akhaada* is the name used for gym). It was not the case that he “hated” singing/music, just that they didn’t like me make a living out of music.
    Well, how time flew.. I kept on singing. And then I kept on listening to great artists. BTW, Allahabad is my birth place. And a lot of musicians/artists would come here. For me, of all the instruments, the sound of *baansuri* seemed so nice, and so sweet, that I thought- why not I try playing the *baansuri*. From childhood, I have been seeing Krishna Bhagawan (one of the gods, an incarnation of Vishnu) also had a *baansuri* with him. I used to wonder, how nice the sound of *baansuri* should be - that we used hear in the epic stories that when Krishna played the *baansuri*, the cows would be mesmerized and enjoy that music; the peacocks would dance to his tunes. The *gopis* (maids) would come to him, play with him for this sweet music. After that, I chose *baansuri*, and had to do a lot of *tapas* (repeated concentrated efforts). There was no string, there was no skin. A very simple piece of bamboo. There are 6 holes over the length. One at the top-end. You need to blow from the top-end; control the six holes with fingers. With 6 holes, we need to produce 12 notes (as required in *hindustaani* form of music). So, to produce those 12 notes I need to find out the techniques of playing with my fingers, and this needed a lot of *tapas*. And today, this instrument has, not only in India, but in the whole world, become so famous. I don’t want to say this has become famous because of me; but surely because of god Krishna. Whereas, the name it got in the field of classical music- there I have spent a lot of effort. And, I am also aware that you all like my style of playing this instrument.
    In my style of playing, you can observe one thing. When I start with *aalaap* (the beginning piece of a concert with only long notes played in a slow manner, with no accompaniments), this *aalaap* is usually in the *dhrupad* style (one of the styles of *hindustaani* music). When I do *joD* that also belongs to *dhrupad* style. Whereas, while playing any composition, then it will be of *khayaal* style/form. This form is of very ancient times. This {I guess, he is referring to the *khayaal* form} I had the fortune of learning from our teacher - our “teacher mother”- Annapurna Shankar (*guru maa* - usually, most Indians refer to older ladies as *maa* = mother). Even these days, I go to her, to learn from her. Even as I learn more and more from her, I come to know how far away is it to reach the end of learning of the art of music. I also want to tell you, the amount of knowledge that an artist can get from the ancient form of education - in the *guru-shishya* style of education - ( *shishya* - student), that amount of knowledge is way much more compared to any modern “school” type of education. Even as I teach to students now, I still follow the *guru-shishya* style.
    Now, I want to tell something about *baansuri* itself. It is such an ancient instrument. I feel, this instrument is as old as the mountains. Can anyone tell how many years, or days old, a mountain is? When did this mountain begin to form?
    This instrument looks so simple. And why? Because, the lord Krishna himself made this. We didn’t make it. When Krishna made this, he would have thought it should not be difficult to make one. There shouldn’t be the need to tie a fine metal string, or skin of an animal. He just took a bamboo, made a few holes, and began blowing air… making music out of it. He began to play and dance amidst the *gopis* (maids of Vrindavan). But, the effort needed to play this, the energy needed to blow, the finger position, the amount of blowing needed to bring out a tone,- all these, we are able to realize now - that how much *tapas* is needed. How much *saadhanaa* (disciplined training) is needed. Why? That’s because from the mere 6 holes, we need to produce 12 tones, and over 2-2.5 octaves, by blowing and adjusting the finger movement. This is a very difficult task. Also, if it is tuned properly, somehow the tones get produced. But when this person (referring to himself) is not in-tune with the *swar* (pure note) from within, then it would be impossible to produce the clear notes from any instrument.
    Further, I want to tell this. That today, *baansuri* (flute, in general) has been considered as the oldest musical instrument the world over, not only in India. It has also become very popular, that many many people have this in their homes. And, most of the forms are very much alike. Yes, here in India, we make it out of bamboo. In some foreign countries, it is made of metal. And, in some other places, made of {unable to decipher the material} - with slight modifications in the shape, but with overall similar form. And, sound as well - there are slight differences. The metal flutes - produce metallic, sharp notes. The ones made of bamboo produce slightly different notes. But, for me, the dearest is the sound produced by bamboo. It also feels very natural. {end}.
