Hi Rob I always enjoy the chats over lunch and meeting interesting guys like all at Horncliffe . If you have a look at some of my videos I am sure that you are a novice compared to myself when it comes to striking at salmon . I am sure whenever Ollie goes with you on fishing trips he will not starve , Its in his nature to look hungry. I am sure that when we meet again we will have a good lunch and maybe do some catching . At least your getting a cast at them,haven't wet a line,no water here,missed all the rain,rivers above and bellow got water and fish,but it's the most frustrating season for salmon ever had,river Ayr and Lugar water I fish,good video ,tight lines.
Thanks Douglas The rain seems to have missed so many areas and others have had torrential downpours . The upper Tweed has had little or no rain but some of the tributaries have managed to keep the river levels up further down I have tried doing a rain dance in the past but never made any difference Tight Lines when the rain does come. I think that this year has been a year of watching fish splash about and having them swirl just below the surface at your fly James. There is always the next outing , the preparation and the anticipation . There is also the company of other anglers who are usually in the same zone and happy to be out on the river . Thanks Paul Life has been a bit unsettled in the Bain household but I suppose that's life. I hope that your family are now all covid free and able to get your intake of grandchildren . I was fortunate that I had some fish turn at the fly as there were 5 anglers on our beat and over on the other side at Ladykirk there were 10 anglers none of whom caught a fish and I would imagine that there were several all the way up the river that never saw a fish . Hi Iain. I’ve been waiting for another video. I fished Dilston on the Tyne and exactly the same happened to me. Lots of fish jumping but no takers. But the Tyne isn’t fishing well. I need to head North.
Its unusual for the Tyne not to be producing Raymond, I think that the rivers have all had a bit to much heat and even now they have cooled I think that the water is still a bit stale and putting the fish of. Tony the ghillie was saying that previous days as the water fell after a small lift that even when the fish were coming at the fly they were only nipping at it. I think that we need a week of solid rain to clean the rivers . the weather for cast doesn't look good for us anglers but we will be out on the river trying . Tight lines Cheers Iain 🥃

I could have made the video 30 mins longer if I added more of the fish that splashed Kennet and as you know it is up to them to decide if they take the fly . I think that frustration is something that we anglers get use to early on when we take up the sport . Tight Lines Cheers Iain 🥃
Why was I not informed by the YT algorithm of this new episode? Appears there were many blanked anglers. Not even a wee sea trout! Did the Willie Gunn, Sun Ray Shadow, Red Francis, Iain Special not working. Nice cloudy day and fish were present. Salmon gods are in control. Cheers🍺🇺🇸
I think that YT have altered some of there functions Hal . They have also allowed adverts onto videos even although the videos or the person adding the video is not registered for payment . I have been told by some that adverts have been appearing on my videos and its all due to YT changing the terms and conditions. as for the fishing there were no fish caught by any anglers on the beat I was on and none on the opposite side at Ladykirk. 15 anglers in total that were fishless Cheers Iain 🥃

Hi SSF The Tweed has been on its bones for weeks and holding a lot of stale water. I think that the rain forecast may not be enough because the ground is that dry a lot will run strait off and once it starts to sink in it will take a lot to get the ground to hold water and keep the river levels up. It is split into three beats at Horncliffe and you only get a chance at two in the day so I may have to save hard and get another day. It is definitely a nice stretch of water . Cheers Iain 🥃
Just reading Derek Knowles book Salmon on a Dry Fly (again), a tiny yellow dolly or a hitch fly/tube might have been worth a try, or upstream nymphing. Salmon are endlessly fascinating and frustrating in equal measure. Better luck next time Iain!
One of the anglers were fishing the day previous and had the evening pulling various surface flies on the section that I fished in the afternoon Simon . He never had anymore luck but if we had a few days there it is worth trying other methods . when there is only a matter of 8 hours max fishing time changing tips lines flies ect eats into the time the fly is in the water . When you have fish coming short with a swirl and everyone else is trying slightly different tactics and not catching what do you do ............... Go home tired and get ready for the next trip . Tight lines Cheers Iain.🥃. PS I know anglers that have had successes with surface wake flies but I have never had one splash at the fly
Low clear water, tough conditions. Sounds like your fly had a bit interest, perhaps smaller fly may have worked in those conditions? Great casting by the way…👏👏

They say there are many theories why the salmon leap and 'splash' not necessarily for the fly....in your case they're just pleased to see you 😎😉....out of interest how did the others fair? So many memories of days just like the one you've just had....tight lines

Yes Chris there is a lot of width to the river . The line I was using was a Scandi Short that I have had for quite a few years and never tried fishing at distance with it and should have changed it at lunch time as I was having to force it to get distance and went home with a sore shoulder. I would probably still have ended up fishless if I had changed lines but less pain . Cheers Iain 🥃

Hi David that was my first time fishing at Horncliffe . I have never had success with skated flies or sunray shadows , I maybe have not persevered with it long enough . I have watched others fish various floating techniques without any joy but may need to persevere . the other guys that were fishing that day had the same catch results even although we were fishing at different depths and different flies . I find that a day on the river disappears that quickly that the intensions of trying something different go out the window But next time I am on slack water Iwill try and spend some time on the surface.
