Aurelia Dobre in my opinion is the best gymnast ever. Technically and artistically she fused everything to create the most astonishing and captivating gymnastics routines. Yelena Shoushounova and Daniela Silivas would not have withstood the challenge of a healthy and confident Aurelia Dobre at the Seoul Olympics.
Oh yes, agree completely - her compulsory floor was GREAT, simply beautiful! Is it on TH-cam? If not I might try to figure out how to get it from the VHS tape I have.
You scrutinize Dobre and speak in such general and generous terms about Mills. Dobre's leap series was not "weak" but you are speaking from a simplistic perspective. Her handstand pirouette was beyond stable (and do consider the amplitude and extension that characterizes her every move). Mills was at best solid and she took a noticeable adjustment step on the final pass. This error along with the lack of style, extension and poignancy proves my point. Think outside the box!
Does anybody know what the name of this music is? I have heard it for the last 20 years as I rewatch my 1988 tape periodically. I would love to know what it is!
If you are going to be so contentious...be objective. If Daniela Silivas was the standard for the 10.00 (something that you imply) then Aurelia absoultely deserved a 10.00 and Mills no more than a 9.80 and not just because of her "finishing pose" but her lack of artistry, low virtuosity and the anticlimatic feel to her performance. There is a serenity and poignancy to Dobre's exercise that is captivating. You yourself say that her style and execution was excellent.
"If Daniela Silivas was the standard for the 10.00 then Aureilia absolutely deserved a 10.00" I hope you are not implying this routine is as good or better as Silivas's compulsory floor routine, since that would be absurd.
Dobre was a great gymnast, but ROM should have taken Szabo to Seoul in her place. Szabo was a great compulsory gymnast and still had great optionals at 1987 Worlds. Barring injury or significant burnout, she should have been taken instead.
This was a perfect 10 routine that was given a 9.90. It was absolutely infuriating because Dobre was much better in this routine than several Soviets and American Phoebe Mills who also scored 9.90s. Yelena Shoushounova and Svetlana Boguinskaya deserved their 9.90s but Phoebe Mills' form was far from 9.90. However, the Americans were in the last rotation and scores were elevated.
Dobre had weak amplitude on the leaps and in particular the straddle leap. While her style and execution in general were excellent, she didnt have a superior presence as did Silivas. She didnt inspire a 10. You keep carrying on about Mills' adjustment step, it was a finishing pose that she moved a little forward to avoid going out of bounds. It didnt warrant a large deduction. While she wasnt as stylized, she still delivered an exercise very similar to the example provided in 1985.
This for sure did not deserve a 10. It is good but I just finished watching Silivas's routine right before this and this isn't even in the same planet. 9.9 would be the absolute highest you could give when you can't give Silivas anything more than a 10. And I don't think this routine was better than Boginskaya, Shushunova, or Laschenova either, if anything it might be a bit weaker than Boginskaya or Laschenova, so she should happy with a 9.9.
I am not disputing her artistry and flexibilty, but you can see her moves are also accompanied with a lack of power and finesse, very similar to the situation of Melissa Marlowe. Silivas got away with adding her nuances because of her Status, and because of her superior strength and flexibility. I feel, as did the judges, that Mills perfomed a technically superior routine, the skills were clean an uncomplicated and she was light and crisp in the movements, she had great flow.
this routine deserved only a 9.9; while she did hit some lovely positions, her leap series was weak and she also lacked stability in the scale and the handstand piroutte. The dive roll wasnt very special. I feel the score of 9.9 was correct. Mills deserved a 9.9, her positions were very precise, and while not stylized like the Romanians, it was very well performed
Honestly Silivas's routine was so much better than all others, I am not sure a single other routine should have scored higher than a 9.8. I am serious. The 9.9s many gymnasts got for excellent routines, including this one, don't accurately reflect the gap upwards to Silivas's compulsory floor getting only a 10.

Agree!!! I love her gymnastics..my favorite gymnast, hands down
Can imagine what a showdown that would have been? Even when she was injured she never fell off the balance beam.

Brandy Johnson had an impeccable compulsory floor as well and only received a 9.8! Much better than Mills!
Looking at her now and then
so true tim
@Vermontist this is one of the funniest comments I ever read. Very nice...

André Gagnon - Mouvements, but heavily arranged for the purpose of competition.
@@cweichin Thank you!
She reminds me of Lilya Podkopayeva

I do not understand how anyone could criticize this routine..that is what is truly absurd
I would say it's just as good@@simonsenecal6560
