    What’s happening when you zoom in is that the pixels are being interpolated/smoothed to provide a more realistic rendering of the image that helps with visual interpretation. If you want to see the “square pixels”, right-click on the layer in the layer manager, then change interpolation to nearest neighbor. Or, if you want nearest neighbor to be the default for all cases (like it used to be), there is a preference for it.
