I don't even want to do medicine, but this is probably the best video I have watched so far on TH-cam. This story is so inspirational, and I do think the NHS is so lucky to have you!
@@chi3775 hahaha sorry Chi, I was just referencing that line in the Batman films ('Bruce why do we fall? So we can pick ourselves back up'). Fully appreciate the comment though, it's hard but you have to keep going despite the falls!
inspirational! I’ll be applying soon for med schools and Edinburgh is my dream school so fingers crossed! although it’s hard to remain optimistic because of the experiences I’ve heard about .. and I was surprised that you got rejected from Edinburgh at first even with your 4A*s!
Hi Daniel, thanks for sharing your story! Like you I also really suck at interviews and got rejected by the 3 other medical schools which I interviewed with, only to be accepted by Edi after the 3 rejections. Glad to know that I am not alone :D
@@danieljinsun haha not the easiest medical school to get into, but it was great for those who can’t do interviews. The school has interviews now though 😂
this is very interesting to watch and its amazing to see that you learn from your mistakes and kept going. I also hate interviews. I did decent on my GCSEs but not amazing and then i got ABB for A levels so the medicine door was kinda shut for me cos i wasn't willing to resit (i found my a levels particularly hard). I got biomedical science at Warwick for my back up but i didnt want to do biomed and i got a place at liverpool to computer science in clearing, but my mum (i think she wanted more that me) to be a doctor so we signed up to agencies and got 2 offered to places in plovdiv (bulgaria) and oradea (romania) to study medicine. I just sat my last exam of the 2nd year yesterday and am waiting on results. Even if I got all A*s i still think i would have struggled with interview for the same reasons as you, that my heart wasn't fully in it. don't get me wrong, i don't hate it, its very interesting and just getting to go to university is good life experience but i feel there are a lot of people who are more passionate about it than me. but i think i wouldve preferred studying in UK. I definitely miss the people and british culture etc, but yeah, this place is alright.
Very real and heart touching story... Appreciate your honesty. Inspiring too. Congratulations for your final selection. You will be a good doctor one day...
Wow, thank you so much for this video daniel, this is really inspiring! Applying for edinburgh this year (2023 entry) and unfortunately there is an interview now💀 Definitely not an interview person either, and plus I’m applying as an international applicant and my ucat sjt isn’t the best out there, and so I’m going to be living in fear for the next month. The scariest thing about the interview is that there is a group session in addition to 3 12-minute mmis, where we have to do a group presentation with less than half an hour of prep, and they assess your communication and leadership skills. My a levels and cognitive ucat are fine, but the interview weighs 50% of the whole application, so i definitely need to brush up on my public speaking skills the next 20 days…
thank YOU so much! yikes that does sound pretty next level, best of luck with your application! if you end up getting an offer for Edinburgh medical school, I can't recommend it enough - such a great city to spend your best years. :)
I'm always rewatching this video; it's very inspirational to me. I'm a mature Brazilian student living in Paisley near Glasgow, and my dream is to become a medical student at the University of Glasgow. I have already been accepted into the SWAP Course, which is a two-year program designed to help us attain the necessary scores for Medical School. Let me tell you, getting into that course was highly competitive. You need to take a test and achieve a score high enough to be considered. After that, you'll be interviewed-it's essentially like entering the university, but with less intensity. I ranked 13th out of 150 applicants, which is good. The next step will be achieving a high score on the UCAT. As for my experience, I already work as a Care Assistant. I hope I can make it too, bro.
My daughter has A Level 4A* UCAT 2980 SJT Band 1. She was rejected by Liverpool without offer of an interview at all!!! She was offered interviews but rejected by Leicester & St George's; on waiting list by Manchester. I believe she's facing extremely credible competitors during the early part of this year, luckily, she opted to clearing and was finally accepted by Barts ❤.
Good lord, I needed this today. I’m a wannabe grad entry medic. I spent the last year prepping, working as an HCA, getting work experience, volunteering etc. Then I took my UCAT. 😞 2250. I’m applying anyway but am resigned to the fact that I will be rejected. Slowly but surely getting used to the idea it’s going to be an additional year (at least). Your video gives me hope! X
This is SOOOOOO INSPIRING😭🥹❤️🔥 I also had been trying for years and now in a med school. Finger crossed after 2 years I can get transferred to Edinburgh medical school🩺
I think I just Googled NHS jobs/career vacancies and found the closest one to me! It’s really not that hard to get a HCA/CSW role - I think most people could walk into a vacancy without any experience. I only got an induction or training 3 months into my job!
It's very interesting hearing about your experience - thank you for sharing it. I always find it really good to hear about other medics' experiences. I was an international student applying to the UK for the 2007 intake. The advice we were given were: 1. do not apply for anything other than med school because it weakens your application, 2. do a work experience job and 3. apply for London and Oxbridge, it's every Mauritian's dream. I did a work experience job - it was extremely helpful. I didn't apply for anything other than med school. I did NOT apply for London and Oxbridge - I wasn't looking for prestige lol I just wanted to be a medic. I applied for HYMS, Glasgow, Dundee and Edinburgh. When my A Level results came out (we sit our exams in Nov so results come out in Feb), I immediately got rejected by Edinburgh - which is quite funny because I was actually the top applicant in my country in terms of academic performance (the other kids who did better weren't applying for medicine). I knew this because we are a scholarship system and our individual papers (not just subjects) are graded - so we didn't just get A's/A stars. I got interviews with all three other unis. Absolutely traumatised by the interviews and felt like I bombed them but... but! I got three offers from them all. It was mind blowing. I picked HYMS because they were cheapest lol. As an overseas student paying that humongous fee... you gotta do what you gotta do. The feedback you got for the interviews saddens me hugely. I'm autistic, though I didn't know it at the time. I'm extremely good at masking/compensating for my autism (e.g. I have timed to the second exactly how long you're meant to make eye contact and measured to the millimetre how big a smile is meant to be in different contexts). But the feedback literally says they would throw out all autistic applicants unless they learned to mask to the satisfaction of the panel. Big yikes. It would of course also affect applicants who like you may be shy or stressed, or have an anxiety or depression problem. I know selection has to be very elitist because of the high number of applicants but it just doesn't sit right with me. I wonder if interview panels ever get formal EDI advice on their process. I'm very glad you finally got into medical school though! You put in a lot of work and effort into this. I'm just miffed on your behalf that they put you through such a tough time for it
Wow, again thanks for sharing Raven! I'm sure others will find that account useful. How they decide the application process I'll never know, but yeah glad I made it in the end. The silver lining is that it felt even more rewarding at the end of the day because of how challenging the journey was
Actually i am 17 year old and when i came uk i was 14 i didn't get admission 2 year i am just at hoem last year i call in every school again so they know she is 16 she shuld be in collage so i just take health and social care. Please tell me which gcse subject needed for medical i mean must gcse for medical. Is physics is mist in gcse if i don't take physics is it okay.
is Edinburgh 6 year med school worth it? If you go to a decent economy degree, start working only after 3 years, med student still in training, it seems hard to catch up in term of earnings.
Hey thanks for the comment! I have another video about this on my channel about my earnings as a first year NHS doctor, and whether or not it's worth it. Of course if you compare salaries to training time/candidate ability, medicine in the UK doesn't pay out fairly but as I say in that video too, it's not all about the money. And for me, medical school was a really great time in my life - so I think it was worth it. The career that comes after? That's subjective.
