- Two first-time mothers care for their babies in Limbe, Cameroon. Both were orphaned as infants when their parents were killed for bushmeat, then sold into the animal trade; fortunately they were then rescued and cared for by the dedicated staff of the Limbe Wildlife Centre. The first mum is called Brighter and her baby is Balinga (male); the second is Akiba with her female baby Atinbi. More info at www.limbewildlife.org

The mothers are so obviously communicating with each other nonverbally, as if they are sending telepathic messages back and forth, one clearly understanding the other.
I so wish we, humans, would finally finally treat animals with the respect and love they deserve as living, feeling creatures.

Just like some human babies, baby gorillas need some time and patience to latch on and nurse. These wonderful creatures are our close cousins, we need to protect them and love them.

So beautiful. Both moms were human raised orphans. It is amazing both took so well to motherhood. Without the benefit of growing up in the wild and watching other mothers raise their babies. Whoever hand raised them did amazing work.

You are right about the age, Diana, but they have not yet become parents. In sanctuaries, animals are normally given contraceptives when they reach sexual maturity because every baby born takes a place needed for rescued orphans (these two were 'unplanned accidents' - if delightful ones! The hope is that Cameroon will designate an area of forest for rescued apes to return to the wild and at that point, breeding would be part of that becoming a self-sustaining population.
This is precious. A mother's love is universal.

So you're telling me 36% can determine whether an organism is a fruit, a tiny insect, or a bird but only 4% is the difference between man and primates? Additionally, the Bible does say that God made a man out of the dirt/dust of the Earth, meaning we're physically made out of the same material other animals are. The difference is in the fact that we have a moral compass although many choose not to follow it. So it would make sense that genetically a.k.a physically we're similar, but spiritually/ morally? Nah. Have you ever seen a chimpanzee contemplate the meaning of life and proceed to examine the ecosystem it came from? Do chimps feel remorse when they kill something? Honestly, it makes no sense for so many of us humans to feel remorse when we kill animals or ruin their habitats since no other animal would feel the same if they did the same thing.
And before you say anything about chimp intelligence and social hierarchy and how "humanlike" it is, all animals that are intelligent technically act "humanlike." Elephants and dolphins too. But did you know elephants rape and kill Rhinos in Africa? Dolphins commit infanticide and kill other animals for fun, not to eat. There are also stories of chimps killing baby chimps.
Humans do this too, but the main difference is that we feel morally wrongdoing so, unlike any other animal, social or anti-social. That's why we have a criminal justice system for those who commit such acts. That's the godly nature within us. That's how we reflect God. Chimps or elephants don't really care. Maybe the mom will feel sad that her kid is dead but in the end, other chimps will move on and not care. It's happened before and it can happen again.
