Recall that night as if it happened yesterday. I remember seeing Richard Steele walking through the casino after the fight with his blood-stained WBC shirt. He was nice enough to take a picture with me. Also saw Evander Holyfield waiting in the lobby by the elevator to go upstairs to his room. He wasn't too happy. Still have my "Thunder Vs. Lightning" jersey, program, poster, and vinyl windbreaker stored away somewhere. Great memories.....
Chavez was hitting more power shots evidenced by the damage to Taylor starting in the second round. Blood was coming out of Taylor’s nose and mouth the whole fight with serious swelling around his eyes. Lampley and Sugar Ray Leonard were so biased against Chavez. I kept thinking are they watching the same fight?
Chavez was an absolute monster. It has been terrifying facing him in his prime, relentless, granite chin, and if those barrage of liver hooks....scary.
That fight took the spirit out of Chavez too, he wanted to faint, and was taken to the hospital, they found Cysticercosis in his brain that he wasn't aware of
@carlosocon1378 Wow! Yes, Chavez said he wanted to pass out. He also said he wanted to vomit, but he had to hold it in because if he didn't, he would have had a stroke and died. These are his words almost ver batim.
Holding back vomit doesn’t prevent you from having a stroke lol also cysticercosis is an infection caused by parasites. Unrelated to the fight. He was tired yes, he’s said this. You are giving too much credit to Taylor’s effect on Chavez.
After that fight, Chavez was no longer interested in fighting a war like that, the beating he took from Taylor, avoided him to box more rather than to go to war like a Roman Gladiator
Lol that’s simply not true. He still went to war after that. The difference was that Chavez had way more fights than Taylor and was older. He was already heading towards the end of his career and prime when this fight happened. At that fight Chavez was 68-0 while a Taylor was in his prime at 24-0-1. No disrespect to Taylor. He was a beast but to say Taylor affected Chavez’ career is simply not true. Chavez did say Taylor was the fight that got him the most tired because of his speed. The one who went downhill directly as a result of this fight was Taylor.
@@Itzzmeagain28 Yeah, some four years later, He didn't want to rematch Taylor only a year later because Taylor went up to 147 where Chavez could have made the weight comfortably. lol
What nobody mentions is Lou Duva up on the ring apron while Steele is counting,, when Taylor was asked a series of questions by Steele,, instead of answering he turns to his right distracted by Duva,,, Duva was the nail in the coffin!!! I’d blame him!!!
That fight with Taylor made Chavez realized how close he was from death, because he could have gone into a war with Whitaker and Randall for 12 rounds and hesitated to do it, he started to value his well being more than dying in a ring
Chavez said after the Taylor fight, it's was the closes he's been to death!!! That's how exhausted he was. He has said this for over thirty years when interviewed about that fight, but of course most folks don't know about this outside of Mexico. So I know for a fact I wouldn't "want to be" him at the end of that fight Mr. Jack Riess.
Chavez was dehydrated and exhausted. Taylor was puking blood and had a broken eye socket. I'd rather drink Gatorade after the fight than go to the hospital.
if Taylor fought such a good fight and then he gets knocked out at the end, what does that tell you , even he was brave enough to get up, and i respect that, but an experienced tef Steels, stops the fight , and saves his life❤❤❤
I remember that night of March 17, 1990 at the Las Vegas Hilton because I was in attendance with my parents and brother. We were big Julio Cesar Chavez fans and it was a great night. Saw the rematch live also at the MGM four and a half years later. Sad to see what happened to Taylor afterwards. He could have been one of the greats. Richard Steele did the wrong thing for the right reason....

Stupidest call in the history of combat sports ever! That means Boxing , MMA, K1, the most craziest ever! So he knew how much time there was, how could he not! it was in his face letting Steele know. Ok Taylor won 8 of the 12 rounds, maybe more, the light had flashed 5 times when Taylor went down he got up at 6, by time after he asked him 2 seconds was left! A blink of an eye, no time to get a punch in! Now 20 seconds would have been different the light would not be telling him letting him know he had 10seconds left! By the time he got up two seconds left! Why it matter because no one likes to see someone hang tough suffer, and get robbed like that! Doesn’t matter if Chavez hit 10 times harder or Taylor reveled more on Taylor more damage done, some people have high cheek bones who know.? Maters how many punches landed each round! Watch Duran Leonard 3 Leonard was winning Duran landed one right cross busted his eye wide open in the 12th round! Leonard had to get stitches, one punch but Leonard landed more! No Steele sopped the fight because he was in Cahoots with Don King, and Chavez was kings cash cow. And money talks to the point people will do crazy corrupt things!
And 2 seconds would not have made a difference in Taylor’s health the fight was over, one two seconds over! Steele did it for king , for the cash cow would win!
The so-called points of these refs and the guy standing (can't remeber his name) can be refuted and deconstructed in many ways, but it isn't really worth my energy right now. The video of Chavez admitting that Taylor was better than him in more ways than one is satisfying enough for me. lol
