I'm actually learning this solo from the record right now. It's a work of art. Trey is an absolute simple genius. Just playing to the chords as they go by. Each note with purpose.

This one goes out to all the people who bought Phish tab books and got to the jams to see "jam out" as the only instruction

For many, the chart is going to help out. IMMEDIATE DOWNLOAD AND EMAILED LINK to the Chart is right here: $1.49 goo.gl/7vnhk8 Professional easy to read layout for each scale position and chord tones. For immediate download, just click "return to merchant" after purchase, OR, just simple check your email. The file will be there right away!
Again, the album solo is so delicious and tight. It goes to show how when you have time to write a solo and you know your stuff, you can get magic. This is how to do it live. When studied like this you can instantly hear the similarities in your playing and Trey's. Enjoy!

Thanks stitch this is a sweet breakdown to jamming to sample in a jar. Definitely opens up my mind a bit on the fret board. Can't get enough of these videos!

This is definitely the best explanation of this solo I've seen so far. Sample In A Jar is the first Phish song I ever heard in May 2012 when I was looking up the bands that would be at Bonnaroo, I listened to the intro and said "they sound pretty good, I'll go see them on Sunday". They ended up playing this and several other tracks off of Hoist that night, making it a very memorable weekend. I think Trey bends to the G and B strings to get those country licks in on the studio version, which is kind of tricky but it looks really cool if you can get the bends in tune.

Thanks for this. The most understandable explanation of Trey’s leads I’ve seen.

Got it, nice to see the arpeggios and the diatonic scale in a lesson. I know them but no one really teaches how to use them. Once again you, "da man

Excellent videos, especially this one. I've hit a bit of a rut in my soloing and your videos have been a godsend.

It made sense, I just need my hands and brain to handle the changes. You do such a great job of presenting your ideas. I saw this last year and didn't understand why you used the scales you did, but now after leaning caged, I was with you in theory. Throw out some easy ones as well.

Thanks for the insights.. I appreciate your direct approach and not wasting any time getting down to the nitty gritty! You're a lot of fun buddy!

Because the song does change key briefly if you are not going to play modally within that key or use arpeggios, you need to emphasize the non-harmonic notes to the main key (tonal center) within each chord to sound correct. I've never played through sample because it was never one of my favorite tunes, but I will play with it and give some more info if anyone is interested. I have a jazz background and I may get too technical but let me know and I'll do it. Great channel by the way, I love what your doing!!!!

Fantastic analysis of the chord progression and the solo. I think I'm going to record a backing track and mess around with switching between the appropriate scales. Thanks for this!

Stitch, yay! Thanks so much for putting this up! Very nice, emotional, backstory. Could see it meant a lot to you :) You know, my money was on that Trey used "blues/savory" method for several chords, and then "jazz/sweet" for others, kind of like your Little Wing video. Turns out it's jazz style all the way!
I have progressed a ton with your videos. At a minimum, I can play the root notes over each chord change, in the right scale. I can occasionally throw in some other notes in the scale. However, I have a hard time with creating rhythmic phrases to make it more interesting. Mine are very very basic. At the most it's like maybe moving from one note to the next, and throwing on a hammer on/pull off on the same string.
Now that you've shown us the light on how to think and approach the chord changes in these solos, what scale to use on top, and what target notes to hit, would you consider doing a video on how we can train ourselves to improve our ability to "sew them together" in an interesting way (create rhythmic phrases)?
Many many thanks for sharing your knowledge. This is invaluable to all of us budding Phish/Dead inspired guitarists out there. People, if you like this project, support this man!

I am so happy you finally did this lesson. When you announced it some hours ago, I checked out the song myself. I think Trey uses must of the time the pentatonic matching the underlying chord (like you most of the time, too) and inflects here and there with diatonic passing tones... and this tension building run in the middle. pretty close to your approach but changing the whole diatonic scale with every chord seems in my eyes/ears to busy because of the many changing tones from key to key. Pentatonics seem to glue everything better here and you mentioned them...
But I will take a closer look and check in detail what's going on there. 🤓
Hope you don't feel offended by my mild smartass criticisms in the last few videos! 🙈I know it just starts there and it is more to come. Just can't wait for more advanced stuff. LOVE IT, GOOD JOB! 👍

great video. It's great to get a window into trey's playing. He is tots "awesome sauce." I really dig some of the chiller tunes like Roggae, Let me Lie, Mountains in the Mist, Strange Design, etc. Any chance a vid on these. Keep 'em coming. Thanks.

so great as always-why in some jams its all about the key, and in others (like sample) its all about the chord changes? dont most solos stay in the same key throughout??

You mentioned the diatonic scale, what exactly is this? Do you touch on this scale and other terms like this in one of your videos? Your teaching style is very relatable, and you throw the theory in without scaring people away like many instructors.

I love your teaching style and can’t thank you enough so thank you x 1 billion, do you have any advice for me here is my dilemma: I understand what you are talking about with playing thru the changes but I have this voice in my head that keeps telling me I can,t do it it’s to fast my brain doesn’t go fast enough to keep up. How do I silence that can’t voice and break through and change can’t into can do? Thanks again I look forward to a private lesson I’m trying to get as much as I can for you videos before I connect with you. swani

Great video! How do you know when to use a Major scale vs. a major pentatonic. For example If I was jamming to this song, how would I know whether I should be using an A major scale or an A major pentatonic scale? Thanks very much for any help.

    • @StichMethodGuitar

You know what’s funny is I meant to say A Major Pentatonic in this video but the Words Major scale just came out. You can always play the pentatonic of the chord you are on... check out my Caged primer Playlist especially the last two video
