Manny Oquendo & Libre-Cuando Se Acabara'

  • From the album Los New Yorkinos. Latin jazz musicians have thrived, artistically and commercially, in New York for decades. The veteran timbalero Manny Oquendo and his group Libre have been doing that since 1974. Just as Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers spawned the future stars Wynton and Branford Marsalis and Terence Blanchard, the best and brightest Latin musicians have come from Oquendo's Libre--including conguero and trumpeter Jerry Gonzalez and his bass-playing brother, Andy. This edition of Libre features Andy Gonzalez on bass, trombonists Papo Vazquez and Jimmy Bosch, and pianist Willie Rodriguez. Oquendo and company swing on the salsa jams "Oquendo y Libre" and "Muevete un Poco," (the former featuring rapper El Cacique) and offer a kicking treatment of the Count Basie favorite, "Lester Leaps In." The husky contralto of Cuba's Xiomara Lugart colors the ballroom bolero "Quiereme y Veras," enhanced by Joe Locke's orchestral synthesizer and vibraphone fills. The guaracha-rumba "No Cuentas" and the mambo-son "Chiquilla Ideal" exemplify the call-and-response and montuno traditions that cement Latin music's thrilling range. --Eugene Holley Jr.

    To the person who commented, three years ago, that they noticed that it was faster by the end and it was at the beginning, exactly! I have made a point of pointing this out to fellow musicians to encourage them not to behave as if there was a "click track or metronome" guiding their tempo. If you listen to actual live recordings or many studio recordings that are recorded without the use of contracts the general "rule" is that it is allowed to speed up with the natural excitement of the Music, when certain elements and energy someone will feel it and the others will agree with that and follow. Some tunes have a very radical speeding by the end and others not so much. I have only, come upon some very rare examples One was a Guajira similar to this that I recorded outside of Santa Clara Cuba, (Orq. Aliamen in '85), the band dug in so heavy to the Coro that they actually slow down a little bit at that point and the effect is very deep. I think they pick it back up by the end of the song but it's about the only time I've ever heard that happen.If you listen to many African based forms of music you will find the same principle of allowing the energy to build, without it it can feel sterile in a certain sense if the band doesn't take care to add excitement to the elements.

      Of course where I said "without the use of contracts" I meant to say "without the use of click tracks"

      When will it end...
      The homelessness of the world,
      Badness and wars,
      and racism in the world?
      When will it end...
      The homelessness of the world,
      Badness and wars,
      and racism in the world?
      As I see things
      This world is going to fall
      There is no love, no respect
      for the disenfranchised
      Well the rich who have [money];
      they are not with the poor .
      When will it end...
      The homelessness of the world,
      Badness and wars,
      and racism in the world?
      We are going to unite ourselves brothers,
      and thereby try to help
      those who need it,
      who because of destiny
      walk the world, lost.
      Well you never know,
      when the time will come
      that is found in the same... [?]
      When will it end...
      The homelessness of the world,
      Badness and wars,
      and racism in the world?
      Music
      (When will it end...
      )
      When will the war, the war against drugs end?
      (When will it end...
      )
      When will it arrive at the way
      in which will live with equality
      (When will it end...
      )
      When, when will it end in the world;
      the hunger, the falseness
      (When will it end...)
      Discrimination: when will it end?
      (When will it end...)
      the homeless and the unfortunate
      (When will it end...)
      When will they end the wars?
      and [when will] peace reign?
      (When will it end...)
      when will evil end?
      and the hate and the bureaucracy and
      the falseness
      (When will it end...)
      I want to see the day when we
      love each other like brothers
      its the truth
      (When will it end...)
      outside the bombs of good vieques [?]
      and the bomb completely of honor [?]
      (When will it end...)
      do not lose sight
      that this is accomplished
      and animated
      Racism in the world.
      And the racism in the world.
      And the racism in the world.
      [?] = unsure of what was said, native speaker would do better

    Asumo que Manny quiso hacer su versión de "Al vaiven de mi Carreta", del cubano Ñico Saquito, compuesta en 1936, porque la armonía y la línea melódica son copia fiel de la guajira de Ñico. Si alguien quiere verificarlo, puede buscar en TH-cam
