Wunderschön!
ppfuchs is vastly ill-informed. I have a degree in music. This work is masterfully executed. Yes, I am a high Anglican. Apparently, you are among those Roman Catholics that are bitter because you realize you no longer have the corner market on Catholicism.
Lucian Watkins I fail to see how anyone can describe this as anything but radiant, so completely agree with you. I sing with an R.C. Cathedral choir who perform Palestrina very regularly, have done so for some time, and have been invited over to Italy to show them what they're missing, so I'm afraid this performance is only for the close-minded to not enjoy. it would be nice to have a more "live" feel though. ;)
Countless, dear
@Lucian Watkins There are a few Catholic choirs in Spain and Latín America, which can perform polyphony to a satisfactoty standard!
Well, that "English Choir Boy" aesthetic, used by the Tallis Scholars, with the very white, slightly flat, minimal vibrato sound (so favored by High Anglicans btw) seems quite yucky INMHO for a very Roman Catholic Feast day. This is supposed to be vigorous Counter-Reformation music!!! Remember, Marias Himmelfarht is something that confounds the heretics! (Carl Jung knew what to make of it though!)
Agree with you there ppfuchs. This crispness does convey sterility and lack of pathos.
And again you're right; this music from Palestrina should be denoting joy and exhilaration; a sense of the Church's laudare, adorare, glorificare, gaudere; the Church's great feast of Mary Immaculate's assumption into Caeli.
You sound bitter?
