He is an excellent cold reader. Turning the miss into the hit about the denim jacket was sweet. He sees the miss in their face so fast, and turns it pretty neatly.
The simple way is just to study people. People dress, act, are a certain way because of what they do or want to do or whatever. It's just recognising these "tells" if you will.
***** It does slightly. I won't deny he has a talent for this kind of thing, but getting 50% right, or 30, or 70, whatever, we don't know... Well that is definitively less impressive than the 100% we are shown.

smidget whittington It's way easier to 'guess' that stuff in the age of social media. Remember, DB already knows what he looks like and where he works; it wouldn't be too hard to find the guy online someplace. He's a security guard, he probably spends all day tweeting about how he hates his job and wishes he was off playing golf instead. Although, just why someone with one tedious job would spend his days dreaming of leaving it all behind to pursue another even more tedious profession is beyond even Derren's abilities.
Raskolnikov32 derren probably had a team do this, guy is extremely skilled but he doesnt claim to be anything special, he prefers to trick the masses with things anyone could do
Replaying 1:17 - 3:11 over and over - that last guy is fantastic! So genuine and personable. Most people I've seen seem to react to Derren a little cautiously, as if they don't want to give him too much in case he uses it against them, and they don't like being taken advantage of by others. Perhaps this guy's confidence comes through his job, but I get the sense Derren could trick him in any way and he'd love it. That look of incredulity at 2:53 = priceless.
The reason Derren Brown is so amazing is because he makes you, as an audience, think that he's letting you in on big secrets as to how he does these things, he lets you know how he gets these gullible people in the streets. The greatest trick he's playing is that he's also tricking you. In tricks of the mind, he says that NLP, hypnosis, all that stuff is bunk. He has no high regard for it at all. He's an illusionist, through and through. That doesn't make him any less amazing, though. X)
I find the denim salesgirl one particularly interesting, for the way in which Derren starts by talking in the present term with "It's fashion. It's an assistant in a shop." then subtly changes it to "You selling denim? You selling jeans?" with a seemingly deliberate ambiguity in the way in which it can also be heard as "You were..." or "You are..." Maybe he isn't using these vocal and language techniques at all, maybe I'm entirely barking up the wrong tree. But it's interesting to study and pay close attention to, because it seems to me like he may be using an element of cold reading, subtly getting feedback from his words and adapting them on-the-fly to turn wrongs into rights.
I’ve met a couple of good criminologists and they were able to read a lot of my behavioural symptoms despite being quite reserved. I don’t personally have a clue if Derren Brown has any real psychological training or how much of these shows might be rigged or bullshit, but if he has any kind of clue I’m sure he’d be able to spot psychopathic traits, whether or not that means that somebodies killed someone is different and would probably require a detective.

Why do some doctors become plastic surgeons instead of working with the red cross or doctors without borders?. Even then cold reading is useless in any real application. It realies on the participant to ignore a billion wrong gueses only to be impresed by correct ones.
I had a friend who was asked by a magician to come on stage. He did al sorts of amazing mind control tricks on my mate. For a day or two he stuck to the line that he really had been hypnotised etc. Then, he admitted that the first thing the magician had done was lean towards him and told him how much cash he was going to leave his pocket if he 'played along'.
Great vids (all of them)! A little scary how one person can tap into and make use of all of these subtle mind tricks. I'll be watching. I think I'm hooked.
The truth is far simpler than what they make you believe. Take this on board for a second and try it out yourself for the same effect. It's 5.30pm, Derren's been walking the streets since 4pm, observing these people inside their place of work, he waits until 5.30 - 6.00pm until they leave their job on foot and gets into position, he then boldly strolls up to them and 'pretends' to mind read them telling them where they work...BOOM! And as for the other revelations that come out , try getting one of the production team inside the place of work over hearing their everyday chatter who then can simply cherry pick an event and report it back to Derren. At the time I watched this I was dumbfounded on how it was done, 10 years later and a wiser brain you start to unlock things. The real magic of all Derren Brown's work is making us believe he has a super mind, NLP psychological wizard, who practiced locked away in a room for years - no, just effective thinking is what it comes down to.
Absolutely, rekoJ, i've followed his work since day one, a lot of it really does become clear. Thats not to say that most of his stuff still dumbfounds me though! :)
What he does is real, it doesn't mean to say there is no simple method to it. I have also been to every stage show he has done to date, I know that this is they way THIS is done. He doesn't have magical powers you know, he is human and will find any way to fool the likes of you an me. There are some people out there who think he is on another realm, and thats exactly what he wants you to think. Trust me, the truth is far simpler.
Its the same in the US embassy in London, They use cheep security at the door so if a terrorist attacks its just random causality that dies and not a police man or a US citizen
It would be a massive waste of resources to have fully trained police officers standing guard at the station all day when they can just hire security workers at near minimum wage
It is certainly is impressive, but I wouldn't put him at Sherlock level. Brown is great at what he does but he's a mentalist and if a magician is telling how he's doing something then he's probably either telling half truths or flat out lying. I'd be willing to bet that his talks with these people were quite a bit longer than what's being shown and in that time he was able to pick up clues and pull information through cold reading. Also notice that he never actually interviews the people he's talking about (like the "journalist") as he's explaining his his method. The viewer simply takes his word for it because he started off with a couple of successful reads and that's gotten us thinking in a pattern of him being right. Another way to increase his odds of success (though I'm not saying that he did this) would be to hang out in a business district and pay attention to what buildings people come out of as they go to lunch. If you know the kind of bushiness occupy the building they just came out of then you've got a head start. Clothing would help narrow it down a bit more based on if a more or professional or casual look and whether or not it looks expensive. Demeanor could help narrow it down further between a position of more or less power in their work role. Pretty soon you've narrowed it down to a hand full of things it could possibly be based on the location and you can take an educated guess from there. It helps if you're vague enough and just name the field and let them fill in the title. Most of the time they'll actually incorrectly remember it anyway when they tell their friends later and give you credit for being way more accurate than you were. The mind loves to embellish on what we remember. Don't get me wrong, cold reading is something that takes skill and a lot of time to get good at. I greatly admire this kind of mentalism (as long as it's not being passed off as supernatural) but I don't think that Scotland Yard will be requesting his services any time soon.
SpikeWolfwood It's fiction vs reality, you can always put fiction to a super high standard unobtainable by real people. What he is doing is very impressive (the things he does besides cold reading are as well) and I wouldn't be surprised if secret services used people of his skill level, as this, combined with the skills of a true detective, is exactly what they are looking for. He's a showman, a very good one (maybe the best cold reader out there) and you should always take showpeoples skill with not a grain, but a bag of salt. As for the last guy, derren has already shown us how easy it is to make people want something that they didn't ever consider (that bmx video).
SpikeWolfwood I agree with everything you said; I think the great thing about this guy is his communication and influence. To some portion of the population, he is a wizard by chance. It is exercised very well; I would like to see how often it works as intended, and how progressive right answers enhance the agreeability of participants.
I also think his influence is a positive thing. As impressive as anything he dose can be I appreciate that he reminds people that it's all accomplished through tricks, observations and misdirection. There have been a lot of unscrupulous people who have used the same techniques to pose as "genuine" psychics in order to take advantage of the grieving, vulnerable and unaware. Not only is he a good showman with ample charisma, but the fact that he admits that nothing he does is achieved through supernatural powers is great for educating people against being fooled by those who may want to take advantage of them. Not just good entrainment, but a good introduction into concepts like cold reading, cons, scams and psychological phenomena such as the the Forer effect. That last one may be of particular interest to anyone who is partial to things like astrological horoscopes. I believe Derren Brown even did a bit about it a while back.
I'm an IT Consultant and the networking administrator of a surgery hospital. I'm not sure what could possibly give that away, except maybe social confidence and attention to fashion and grooming, since I need to make excellent first impressions to new business partners. Maybe that would be noticeable, but lots of people have strong social skills and ways of winning over people on a first impression. That doesn't really narrow it down.
Gregarious and nighttime outfit during the day = pr fashion person. Come on that is not enough information to narrow it down that much. This is nonsense.
The more realistic answer would be that he either guesses a lot of times and fails a majority of the time or that these people are followed leaving their place of work by someone else and that information is fed to Darren.
No, that's the more *cynical* answer. You'd be surprised how much of yourself you give away just in your posture. He's not just coming up with all of this, he has to observe someone for a bit to get a gauge and he asks questions to see if he's on the right track.
+LunarD3A7H think about what you just said, if you were to work at a certain job and would get this posture you are talking about that identifies you as that profession, then what happens when you switch jobs? Do you really believe that your posture depends on your job and every single job in the world has a certain posture to it and all other factors influencing you and your posture do not matter? Really, people that want to believe dont question things, its the same for religion. Just believing it doesnt make it any true.
Of course you can read a people a lot by their posture and clothing, but mentalism usually is not "psychology on steroids" it is tricking people in one way or another and keeping them just on thee edge of believing it might be true (unlike normal magic where people these days tend to know that it is all about sleight of hands and gimmicks and it is always an illusion and not real power of magician). Mentalists usually get information about their subjects well in advance or use stooges for some tricks, or use normal magic but pretend that it is all psychology but it is same smoke and mirrors and other branches of magic.
No - it is induction, or inference. Deduction is where you take a number of premises and arrive at a single conclusion that, given the premises, is the only conclusion you could reach. i.e. p1) All men are mortal. p2) Socrates is a man. c) Socrates is mortal.
I do the same thing. When you have the data, conclusions can be drawn. The problem is the data is usually ambiguous or absent. By the way, Sherlock Holmes is based on a real person, Joseph Bell.
Federico Eiriz his reaction should have read complete and utter amazement. Instead he just quietly keeps it to himself and just went with the program. Also, microexpressions.
Jin Kazama Was he going well until he mentioned sports/opened space? (So it might have been fishing, hunting etc) or maybe was he just plain wrong from the start?
Federico Eiriz I don't know the chances of him guessing the right answers but all of this is just a well thought out trick designed to amaze and astound the audience.
+Jin Kazama Maybe he wasn't amazed but uncomfortable, taken aback and freaked out that Derren actually knew? Watch the last car salesman when he Derren guess when he was lying, he had the same type of "taking a step back" reaction /watch?v=khlz170_HWI
My God, man, you're absolutely right! It's all so obvious. That copper at the end was really a detective on his tail and Derren just flauted his talents in front of him and the detective never even realised who it was. For the love of God, he's a criminal mastermind!
"two legs, brown jumper, a mild mannered walk with a slight inner demon possession and eating a kit kat before 1 pm on a Thursday in December...are you a toilet attendant?....no?....ok, have you ever gone to the toilet? yes?...good....thank you....now for my next trick...!"
Protip: Most people take the same route to work everyday. If you know where and when you plan to do a demo, then you can spend a few weeks in advance following people to the buildings where they work. Then stop them at a later date and "guess" where they work from memory.
I've seen him get one wrong on stage. As a random person from the audience was volunteering for something he said "Are you a therapist or a counsellor of some sort?" and she said "No, I'm a teacher", so he was fairly close (a lot of teachers and therapists have a similar "look" about them), but he quickly changed the subject. Obviously the "misses" were edited out of this clip, but it's pretty amazing how most people reveal a lot about themselves by the way they dress or carry themselves. Everyone's trying to send out a message.
yeah he still does a tremendous amount that i havent been able to explain. Interestingly he never claimed to be psychic.. yet he gets more impressive results than those who do claim psychic powers.
Tacbrovich You obviously haven't worked out how much time that would take... filming every episode using a method of guessing a 1 in a thousand shot, and keeping the hits. Never mind the stain it would do to his reputation.
Simon0: Well "psychics" are fake anyway and basically use what amounts to psychology and magicians tricks to convince people. Keep in mind that Derren is a magician, so there's a trick to the stuff he does. He wants you to think he's just using psychology and stuff, but that's the magic wand and the "Abracadabra" not how the trick was actually done.

Darren Brown: Ok so you err.... so I’m sensing a smell something in garbage no no no errr ok I’m thinking, your on the street with your sleeping bag... oh oh oh I got it I got it... your unemployed and homeless!!!
Something is telling me that the last guy wasn’t really thinking of golf, but wanted out of the invasive conversation and so just agreed with whatever he said.
So how comes for the last guy he contradicted the job by saying it's an inside job so you want an outside job then said you work on your own so you want a job where you work on your own
He's just reading peoples micro-expressions as he feels around. Each time he guesses, he see's how they react. It's not "mind manipulation", it's just being perceptive.
If you were dedicated enough to learn how to do observe people and make proficient conclusions, where would you start practicing? Is there some sort of key that I could at least start out with?
Im really interested in knowing how he does that . Please tell me :) Is it connected with psychology ? the way they dress ? How did u learn to do it :)

SpikeWolfwood dito
I look employed, but lemme tell you a little secret..I'm not
bro, just use your magic tricks to create a job.
What’s this song playing in the background?
When i saw him live he didnt fail to guess anyone.
This is nonsense.
robotpanda77 This is showmanship.
I think this was filmed in Soho. Everyone on the street in smart clothes round there works in PR or advertising.
Arty Lee Carnaby. The place consists entirely of fashion retail and PR.
Yeah, notice how he never actually confirms those guesses.
Butthurt. Lol.
I’ve seen five of Derren’s live shows…best money I ever spent…mind-blowing-Jedi-like wizardry…amazing…
LunarD3A7H I am not cynical, but you can call me skeptical :)
He is hypnotizing them.
Clever - but walking around Soho at lunch time wont take long to find HR people.
Some real clever tricks Derren has!
bloody hell, I forgot what he looked like with hair.
I do the same thing. When you have the data, conclusions can be drawn. The problem is the data is usually ambiguous or absent.
By the way, Sherlock Holmes is based on a real person, Joseph Bell.
I think he is doing some sort of hypnotism to make the people agree with Derren no matter what he says.
or he had someone ask these people about their jobs earlier and he already knows what they do before he starts talking to them
BLAZExSTORM or he is a gifted deductionist
Or he is secretly Sherlock Holmes.
BLAZExSTORM I like apples
you mean the hypnotism that happens while pieces of paper with numbers written wander from the show's budget's pockets into the actor's pockets?
This is amazing! Subscribed.
Even if they are going along with it, it still shows how he can manipulate people into doing things
The same way of what the government is doing today, coercion, manipulation, fear and control
I agree! At 1:21 he says "yess I do" and at 2:20 he says "right"
i can do this in my street: "dole dole dole"
I would love to see him do more of this stuff
I hope he wouldn't be able to tell that I'm a software engineer; that would be an insult!
Jinmane even your joke proves your profession ^^ (just kidding)
Jinmane y'all look alike hahaha
the last guy was waiting for him to go in for the kiss
He looks a bit like Sheamus in this video.
Wild accuracy!
I read in the last guy that he read his fantasy job wrong.
Why, i'm interested to know?
"two legs, brown jumper, a mild mannered walk with a slight inner demon possession and eating a kit kat before 1 pm on a Thursday in December...are you a toilet attendant?....no?....ok, have you ever gone to the toilet? yes?...good....thank you....now for my next trick...!"
haha
fuck me this comment came close to making me shit myself with laughter.
I died xd
Protip: Most people take the same route to work everyday. If you know where and when you plan to do a demo, then you can spend a few weeks in advance following people to the buildings where they work. Then stop them at a later date and "guess" where they work from memory.
0:40 she has beautiful eyes btw ....
what if they were brown
Jack Black Then they wouldn't be as beautiful.
you have beautiful eyes sweetie *lemmie face*
i cant believe it! i've seen this like 3 times and not once did i notice it, but now when i watch it it seems so obvious
Now show us the ones he got wrong.
Everyone's trying to send out a message.
it's hypnotizing people to say what derren wants them to say, not that derren konws what they are thinking.
It's fairly easy to cut out the wrong guesses and only use the successful ones. Anyone can be a mentalist with a camera and some editing software.
Tacbrovich true! Ask someone to name a number from 1 to 1000 and guess it. Keep on filming til you get it right and just show that one!
He does live shows though..
yeah he still does a tremendous amount that i havent been able to explain.
That security guy is chill
Police Security? The police are the security for civilians, so technically the security have security??
if police are there to protect people, and security protects the police.. won't that make security better than police?
noshah 26 this guy has got a good point
You my sir have a gift. You would not be so easy to control. You pick up the subtleties in voice and conversation. Well done my man.
Omg he's just like sherlock
+da man the answer is: Memory. He has seen most of these people before
No shit shirlock
he actually made the guy think he'd like to play golf
woulda been so funny if hed said drug dealer for the last guy
Eyesssssss! Body language! Thanks god I am talented but I still have watch all your videos again and again!
well im a goth head to toe in black with a long black leather matrix style coat. id love to see him to to guess my profession. (plumber)
+smidget whittington full time weaboo more like
google m8
lol....
Smidget i guess Virgin!
Hmmm I'm guessing from your style you like metal, metal tools, metal pipes. From your coat I can see you like flowy things, flowy coat, flowy water. Water, metal pipes, you must be a plumber.
I'd love to see the 800 wrong guesses
He is like a real life Patrick jane
Does anyone know the song being played over the top at the beginning?
Well the first tart was no Einstein was she when Brown asked her.. "Do you know who I am or what I do?"................................
"No"...
So the cameraman and sound engineer weren't a bit of a clue then you dozey mare!!!
Well if you don't know who someone is a camera crew isn't going to help in any way is it? You numptey!!
That'd get you as far as 'you're on TV' but not anything else about him, & that's the bit that's clearly (1) not that relevant & (2) glaringly obvious, so it makes complete sense that she wouldn't say that :S
Had she answered yes would it really have mattered.
Does anyone know what music is used in the first 30 seconds of this clip?
ora ora temos um xeroque homes aqui
Bet the bloopers from this would be hilarious 😂. “Your a doctor, I can tell”. “No I work in Tesco, but thanks”
he's got a devil inside of him, damn.
True, he'd got the Omen in him ^^
Tried that round at Liverpool the other day, "Shell suit, moustache, curly hair, barely speak English, I can see that you are good with security, good with locks, but you don't make locks, nope, not locksmith, You work on logistics, you move stuff from place to place, alloy wheels, car stereo..."
Darren Brown: Ok so you err.... so I’m sensing a smell something in garbage no no no errr ok I’m thinking, your on the street with your sleeping bag... oh oh oh I got it I got it... your unemployed and homeless!!!
Amazing!! You're the best!
The guy was watching his ball fly, he saw him look into the distance
If you were dedicated enough to learn how to do observe people and make proficient conclusions, where would you start practicing? Is there some sort of key that I could at least start out with?
Honestly I feel like this dude uses familar spirits to know these things
I loved that last guys face.
I wonder if there is anything else to it...
Does anyone know any other specific techniques he uses other than maybe cold reading and basic 'looking'?
I’ll begin with a question: how do you keep the stooges quiet?
anyone know the name of the background music?
0:45 Could we confirm if this part is true or NOT?
Im really interested in knowing how he does that . Please tell me :) Is it connected with psychology ? the way they dress ? How did u learn to do it :)
The secret is... are you ready... He asks them before they film.
I don't know what you mean by fake, it's just something i noticed :) derren brown is an excellent psychologist and all i noticed was something involved in his method, he talks in a certain way to bring answers out of people without them knowing it :)
OMG! nice catch!!!!!
All police stations have security guards or just in the uk?
He's not fake. It's about your energy. He spots the individuals prone to it. Helping them also I guess
He's not reading his mind. He's an hypnotist. So it is all logical really.
I've been on that site before. I got quite a bit out of it. The methods seem good enough. The premises might need to be double checked, though.
No, they told him what they work with earlier. But he makes them forget that. At 1:21 you can see it...
I want to learn this art please tell me how can I learn it
