  • In the U.S. and other places, the waste water infrastructure is aging and not well suited for dealing with many of the challenges that lay ahead in the future. Chelsea Wald has spent over 8 years researching the toilet, and discovered it needs a BIG upgrade.

In certain coastal cities, like Hong Kong, sea water is used for flushing toilet. Since it is already not drinkable, the treatment for the water intake takes less electricity and chemicals. It makes treating waste fresh water a lot cheaper too since all the toilet waste are treated separately. While setting up three separate water systems, fresh water, salt water, and storm drains, is expensive at first, it save money in the long run.

My college used reclaimed and cleaned graywater in the restroom sinks and toilets. While signs along the lines of "Don't drink the sink water" had to be posted, it otherwise worked out fine. I live in a desert and so we don't really have the option of seawater, but based on experience I do agree that non-potable flush water is a good idea.

I am surprised you did not address the most counter intuitive problem of modern waste water systems: ecologically friendly, _water saving_ toilets under-utilize the sewer systems, which were conceived of a hundred years ago for much larger amounts of water going through them and _relying_ on this amount to keep them clean. A lot of blockages are caused by too _little_ water passing through the sewers these days. And then, there's _fat bergs,_ of course - which show the amount of damage that stupid or unwilling users can inflict on a perfectly well designed system.

I wish bidets were more common in North America. I loved the bidet in Japan, even in public settings - and certain models had a sink designed over the toilet tank.

Western toilets are very much behind Japanese ones, but those weren't really talked about here.
The waste management system they talked about isn't something I'd attribute to toilets per se, but it might sell better than "sewage system".

    Amazing.
But, in all seriousness, this tech is incredibly necessary, particularly in developing countries without wastewater treatment infrastructures nearly as effective as 'modern' cities. Good stuff all around.

Yeah but you can't really put those directly in the land because it's not just "pee and poo" it's also has detergent which I'm pretty sure "kills" any kind of soil.

I agree and appreciate everything you said.
You're correct, the challenge is, society has only ever used one type of toilet; to remove waste.
The idea of using that waste for anything other than waste seems, "icky".
How do you convince billions of people, their waste is valuable?

All that is managed by an electric button like on a flight so no water.is wasted

Hey just wanted to add the first modern swewage system was not in London , but in the Indus valley civilization 6000 -8000 years ago. You can see it in Mohenjodaro & Harappan city ruins. These cities 100s of them were built as per certain standards , and all of them had a sewage system in place including flush toilet. Thank you.
