Same here. After the last spike, I started consolidating trips. I was able to cut down from refueling weekly to bi-weekly. I've sense sold my little Subaru and purchased a RAV4 hybrid. I didn't even notice the increase, because I only refuel once a month. I have a diesel truck that I use when I need to pull a trailer, but 90% of the time, everything fits in the RAV4. I had to laugh at a friends choice to purchase a new RAM3500 dually because shortly after the purchase, he started complaining about diesel prices. 😂
The people who make the rules are detached from real life. People who live day to day are becoming detached from real life from struggle fatigue. Jan 6 was only the beginning. Eating fast food is cheaper than buying budget groceries. Cost of living is rising, paychecks remain the same and companies think 0.10c is an actual raise. My job started asking us to return to the office 5 days a week and I immediately started looking for another job. When I searched for remote jobs on LinkedIn, I found several remote jobs in the insurance industry that I qualified for and found one with higher pay. Returning back to the office at the salary I was making would have caused me to cut back on the amount I contribute to my retirement savings as well as how much I put to the side for saving for another car.

What’s funny as an office worker, we have our C Suite executives, Engineers and Product Managers having that luxury of working from home. Yet proclaiming the narrative to the rest of the frontline workers, especially within the call center to work in the office 5 days a week. While they are comfortable in their own homes not worrying about childcare and gas. It’s a hypocritical narrative that hurts the employees that make the least amount of money. That’s us in the fintech world. With the right tools in measuring productivity: CRM, SaaS, Telephony worker metrics, plus call monitoring. Not to mention Zoom/Slack. Remote work is possible, and if one underperforms, it’s tracked and addressed. Yeah culture would hurt because less face to face interaction and camaraderie. But what’s more important here: Culture or Financial Stability?

My husband is a heavy engine mechanic and had an hour plus commute into the shop. If he didn't find a job closer to home, gas prices would of ruined our budget. There are lots of trades people and service workers who don't have the luxury to work from home.

Some of us aren't low income. I live in a rural area, drive 45 minutes to work everyday, and the gas jumped from 3.30 to 5.60. I had to literally 'pay' to work the other day because I'm on commission and 2 appts canceled. It really doesn't seem worth it sometimes.

All companies that have done price gouging should get fined a huge chunk of their marginal gross profit increases since 2019. If your gross profit margin increased by 40% after jacking up prices by 50%, then it means your true costs only increased by ~10% and most of the remaining 40% is price-gouging.

Where I live, Gas is nearly 6 dollars. Before I quit to start my own practice, I would be stuck 2 hours going to work, and 2 hours going back. My car wasn't exactly gas efficient, but then if I were to by a gas efficient or electric car, I'd have to cough up 30-50k. I've also considered the fact that 85% of my job can be done remotely so being in the office 5 days a week didn't make sense. Because gas prices are insane, If companies are forcing people back to the offices for duties that can be done remotely, commute should be done on the company's time and dime, not the employee. In fact, if a law passed that made employers subsidize employee commute, you'll see how quickly businesses adopt WFH.

Back in the 80's when my friends started having babies many of my friends quit their jobs because it wasn't economical for them to go to work. For them it was the cost of childcare, clothes and bus fare combined. Fortunately their husbands had good paying jobs.

People need larger vehicles on farms to haul equipment and tow trailers so they can farm. It's important for larger farming equipment (combines) so food can be produced so people can eat. We'll see the increase in costs next harvest in the supermarket. If it costs farmers more money, then it costs everyone money.

Im litterally try to keep a full tank. Im spending 70 dollars a week. Commuting a 45 min drive to work...... For a 2016 chevy cruze thats suppose to get 30 mpg city and 42 mph for highway. IN UK we pay $11 a gallon for diesel, and slightly less for petrol. Most cars do 35 miles per gallon. If you want a cheaper commute buy a European car!
Because the down payment for a new car is too much and good credit is almost non existent so they keep the car they have because it's almost paid for. This is the likely scenario for many Americans.

Because he's the highest-paid person in the office that's NOT an executive he's been told he must go in for appearance's sake. This costs us $50+/wk extra now because we have a truck that we bought second-hand before we knew gas prices were going to rocket upwards. He's interviewing for a new and fully remote job today. Employers must recognize that although $50/wk doesn't sound like much, it shouldn't reflect badly on them. We have huge medical bills and associated costs with that - that doesn't mean his higher salary is enough to sustain us. Where are we supposed to cut back when we've already cut back on everything?

If fuel gets to 7.25 and you make 7.25 an hour, and let's say you have a 16 gallon fuel tank. It will cost you 2 days of work to fill up your vehicle. You can't afford a vehicle if someone gave it to you.
Our civilization and modern cities are built around the gas stations. The commuting is insane. Companies could help by hiring ppl close to the work place, and allowing as much remote work as possible. They could also facilitate car pooling among the employees.
Decades ago, long commutes for dad to get to work were solved by packing up the entire family and MOVING close the job. There is not much chance of doing that these days with the housing shortage we are stuck in. Finding a new place to live that is affordable and close to your worksite is now all but impossible.
When I was younger, it took me less than two weeks to realize if a job I had taken was worth it in terms of getting above the break even point. If a job's expenditure is not above 20% all expenses related to work and living expense, then you will actually save money not working. People do not realize you cannot accept job positions that provide you with negative income when factoring in all expenses in your life. People living at the minimum wage level cannot save or change their habits to save more money in order to keep a job that gives them a net negative income outcome which is why so many open positions will never be filled at the lower levels of society. The same situation has and will happen across all class income levels throughout the world. You cannot subsist if both in the short term and long the revenue you generate is lower than expenses forced on you. What will happen is that people will attempt to dramatically alter their life style and much of the discretionary expenses thought to be essential will be pruned out and more and more people will never go back. I've known some older people who find it easier to get into a larger vehicles then smaller ones. I know it's not the typical Trend and lot of older people like it the other way around. It would be nice if they had shorter shorter sun visors options for sedan so taller people could actually use them. Also I need a lot of snow so an SUV even crossover is better than a sedan where I live. I'm 5-11 and most sedans that are made now I find very uncomfortable.

Same here. After the last spike, I started consolidating trips. I was able to cut down from refueling weekly to bi-weekly. I've sense sold my little Subaru and purchased a RAV4 hybrid. I didn't even notice the increase, because I only refuel once a month. I have a diesel truck that I use when I need to pull a trailer, but 90% of the time, everything fits in the RAV4. I had to laugh at a friends choice to purchase a new RAM3500 dually because shortly after the purchase, he started complaining about diesel prices. 😂

My job started asking us to return to the office 5 days a week and I immediately started looking for another job. When I searched for remote jobs on LinkedIn, I found several remote jobs in the insurance industry that I qualified for and found one with higher pay. Returning back to the office at the salary I was making would have caused me to cut back on the amount I contribute to my retirement savings as well as how much I put to the side for saving for another car.

The media focuses so much on white collar jobs when it comes to being “back to office” however how about blue collar workers? Or essential service providers? A person that works at construction cannot work from home, same for a nurse or a pizza delivery driver, yet those aren’t the narratives we hear from. Those are the people that are truly struggling.
My husband is a heavy engine mechanic and had an hour plus commute into the shop. If he didn't find a job closer to home, gas prices would of ruined our budget. There are lots of trades people and service workers who don't have the luxury to work from home.

Some of us aren't low income. I live in a rural area, drive 45 minutes to work everyday, and the gas jumped from 3.30 to 5.60. I had to literally 'pay' to work the other day because I'm on commission and 2 appts canceled. It really doesn't seem worth it sometimes.

All companies that have done price gouging should get fined a huge chunk of their marginal gross profit increases since 2019. If your gross profit margin increased by 40% after jacking up prices by 50%, then it means your true costs only increased by ~10% and most of the remaining 40% is price-gouging.

I have been riding 900 MPGe electric bikes for the past 10 years and got rid of my car in 2012 to save month. It has been a wonderful experience.
Where I live, Gas is nearly 6 dollars. Before I quit to start my own practice, I would be stuck 2 hours going to work, and 2 hours going back. My car wasn't exactly gas efficient, but then if I were to by a gas efficient or electric car, I'd have to cough up 30-50k. I've also considered the fact that 85% of my job can be done remotely so being in the office 5 days a week didn't make sense.
Because gas prices are insane, If companies are forcing people back to the offices for duties that can be done remotely, commute should be done on the company's time and dime, not the employee. In fact, if a law passed that made employers subsidize employee commute, you'll see how quickly businesses adopt WFH.
Consumers need to band together and go after these large oil corporations who are making record profits

It's like living in nightmare. House's price that closes to work or school is expensive, but to commute from affordable neighborhood to work while fuel's price soars is insane.
$6.14 a gallon today. My employer thinks I’m going back to the office, they’re hitting the pipe way too hard. Hundreds of dollars a YEAR? Mine will do that in a month. Need a part-time job to afford the gas for my full-time commute.

Back in the 80's when my friends started having babies many of my friends quit their jobs because it wasn't economical for them to go to work. For them it was the cost of childcare, clothes and bus fare combined. Fortunately their husbands had good paying jobs.

If you can afford to have savings, you're not lower income. Always make sure to add your commute times to your work week, and subtract your commuting costs from your salary are wage. If you're being paid the Federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour, you have an hour and a half of commuting, and you have an unpaid lunch break, you're actually putting in 10 hours daily for that job, not 8, and your actual wage is only $5.80 per hour.

So provided you drive enough miles, already have a home charger and qualify for federal tax credits (an outlay which is paid for in quantitative easy which in turn drives inflation) you would have “a good chance” of breaking even after 2 to 3 years. And this assumes you have the capital to purchase a new vehicle in the first place.
The notion that buying an EV is a viable solution to sudden inflation is absolute nonsense and anyone pedalling such an ignorant notion deserves to be ridiculed.

People need larger vehicles on farms to haul equipment and tow trailers so they can farm. It's important for larger farming equipment (combines) so food can be produced so people can eat. We'll see the increase in costs next harvest in the supermarket. If it costs farmers more money, then it costs everyone money.

Im litterally try to keep a full tank. Im spending 70 dollars a week. Commuting a 45 min drive to work...... For a 2016 chevy cruze thats suppose to get 30 mpg city and 42 mph for highway. Honestly the ethonal i think is higher then the 15% increase cause i know i aint getting 30 miles on a gallon rn. I had a full tank friday morning. 5 days later. Wensday. Im gonna be on E by the end of the night. And i need another 70 dollars.

IN UK we pay $11 a gallon for diesel, and slightly less for petrol. Most cars do 35 miles per gallon.

Because the down payment for a new car is too much and good credit is almost non existent so they keep the car they have because it's almost paid for. This is the likely scenario for many Americans.
My husband is a Database Analyst and has no in-person meetings, and he can do his job entirely at home. Because he's the highest-paid person in the office that's NOT an executive he's been told he must go in for appearance's sake. This costs us $50+/wk extra now because we have a truck that we bought second-hand before we knew gas prices were going to rocket upwards. He's interviewing for a new and fully remote job today. Employers must recognize that although $50/wk doesn't sound like much, it shouldn't reflect badly on them. We have huge medical bills and associated costs with that - that doesn't mean his higher salary is enough to sustain us. Where are we supposed to cut back when we've already cut back on everything?

If fuel gets to 7.25 and you make 7.25 an hour, and let's say you have a 16 gallon fuel tank. It will cost you 2 days of work to fill up your vehicle. You can't afford a vehicle if someone gave it to you.

Our civilization and modern cities are built around the gas stations. The commuting is insane. Companies could help by hiring ppl close to the work place, and allowing as much remote work as possible. They could also facilitate car pooling among the employees.
Decades ago, long commutes for dad to get to work were solved by packing up the entire family and MOVING close the job. There is not much chance of doing that these days with the housing shortage we are stuck in. Finding a new place to live that is affordable and close to your worksite is now all but impossible.

When I was younger, it took me less than two weeks to realize if a job I had taken was worth it in terms of getting above the break even point. If a job's expenditure is not above 20% all expenses related to work and living expense, then you will actually save money not working. People do not realize you cannot accept job positions that provide you with negative income when factoring in all expenses in your life. People living at the minimum wage level cannot save or change their habits to save more money in order to keep a job that gives them a net negative income outcome which is why so many open positions will never be filled at the lower levels of society. The same situation has and will happen across all class income levels throughout the world. You cannot subsist if both in the short term and long the revenue you generate is lower than expenses forced on you. What will happen is that people will attempt to dramatically alter their life style and much of the discretionary expenses thought to be essential will be pruned out and more and more people will never go back. Much of the marketing fluff you see will mean nothing, because many will have no income or are no longer sensitive to the influence due to survival factors.

I've known some older people who find it easier to get into a larger vehicles then smaller ones. I know it's not the typical Trend and lot of older people like it the other way around. It would be nice if they had shorter shorter sun visors options for sedan so taller people could actually use them. Also I need a lot of snow so an SUV even crossover is better than a sedan where I live. I'm 5-11 and most sedans that are made now I find very uncomfortable.
