It's both. Back in the day, Rich Romans had their children learn Greek. Then in turn in the middle ages, rich Catholics had their children learn Latin. Now a days, rich people have their kids learn English.

HK warped economy is mostly service based (finance, banking related). To not know English is a death sentence. In other asian countries where manufacturing/high tech forms most of their economy, being bilingual is not as important. The problems outlined here is a result of the government failing to diversified the economy. The government's policies currently emphasizes on trade, tourism and finance which looks good on paper but produces very little real benefit to the people.
but at the same time hong kong is more a reflection of UK. Given the small size of hong kong the only economy is service based. Finance, banking, tourism etc... There isnt space and do not have comparative or competitive advantage over china as a manufacturing giant. UK has transformed from a industrial country to a service based. Niche product, finance, banking etc... Even car industry got taken over by german. So it is not govt policy it is a shift of time...

I think people hate others speaking english because they can't speak it well. Don't be afraid of something you can't master. Go and learn English well. Surround yourself with people that speaks it well. You would see the benefits of being able to speak more than 1 language.
theres nothing wrong with speaking good english, but that girl (who was raised in HK n both her parents r HKers) cant even speak a complete sentence in cantonese (which is supposed to b her mother tongue). thats the problem.

My personal view is that bilingualism should be continued. Personally I don't understand why so many Singaporean parents intentionally only speaks English at home to their kids. Everything in Singapore is in English, isn't that enough exposure already? I would be ashamed if my children can't speak proper mandarin. For myself, I am trying to learn the dialect of my parents'. :)
+Dan C it is quite difficult to master two languages.... Chinese and Taiwanese focus very much on Chinese while Singaporean put much emphasis on English. Differently, it is a must to handle both Chinese and English for hongkongers. This leads to the fact that many hongkongers are not good at Chinese nor English.
Jere Cullen it would be no problem if your environment also an english speaking countries. but sadly, hong kong has been a cantonese speaking place, english has always been a 2nd language.
Richard, this is my personal view that I want to share with you. I commend you for using your personal time to help the underprivileged. I wish I could help. Hong Kong as a former British colony, in my opinion, is the worst in terms of over English understanding and fluency among the others; such as Singapore and India. It is ironic that HK; being the oldest colony, the importance of English education had not been placed as a priority for so many years by the government, even after the return in 97, the English curriculum in schools has been mediocre at best. It is obvious that this under-achievement is attributed to the failure of the government and the appointed officials. I don't deny that English is not an easy subject to learn, let alone mastering it. That said, it is completely possible if has a strong interest and devotion. I started learning English at 18 years old, literally from alphabets. I had stumbled for many months and wanted to quit. But I kept marching forward, one step at a time. In time, as I understood the rules of grammar, parts of speech, and how sentences were structured, I actually fell in love with this language. I have spent the last 20 years studying the linguistic aspect and tutored ESL level students online for free. HK, no doubts needs help in this area. My observation of the HK students, even at the university level, is not so favorable. Many mistakes are visible in public notices, on the bus, and in MTR stations. I wish people in HK can spending more time focusing on social matters such as English education and the grass-root population. This message is my appreciation for your effort. Keep up the good work. Anyone who has English questions can message me. I'll be glad to answer.

Josephine Leung 我從來都未去過香港，但係有一個問題係，如果香港本身嘅經濟矛盾就冇辦法解決先係根本，我講嘅係香港經濟本身嘅經濟結構畸形，現在係經濟自由化嘅負面效果反應，新加坡嘅人口密度其實仲大過香港，但係點解新加坡冇咁嘅問題？係因為香港有資產人士唔肯樓價跌，亞洲四小龍當中，只有新加坡解決左住屋問題。新加坡一樣大把外勞，根本原因就係香港靠租務收入同地產以及金融作為經濟收入嘅模式係有問題嘅。如果樓價跌，班中產一樣都會反，香港當年負資產造成幾多人跳樓失業。根本原因就係香港政府冇辦法整治商界。仲有，大陸人係租金方面嘅支出好多人唔超過百分之15。而且政府會採取限購令，優先供應本地人，同外地人只可以買一層樓。同香港嘅自由市場唔同，香港係政府弱勢，收入要靠賣地同印花稅，稅率低。導致香港收入高但係同時各項支出都高。因為大部分錢都重新入番樓市同租金度。中央其實就係因為唔插手香港嘅管治，先會造成香港地產商界獨大。以前李嘉誠嘅百佳係廣州到處都係，依家就來冇。因為李嘉誠賺錢從來都唔會睇香港人數，但係大陸唔敢。點解人民日報會點名佢，一點名，班地產佬就個個驚？同新移民根本冇直接關係。同你地嘅經濟模式有關，資本主義行到一定程度就會係咁。香港政府不如新加坡政府強勢，政策可以實行到位。利益牽涉太多。香港要解決住屋問題只能夠打破靠地產壟斷嘅局面。香港面積比新加坡大多啦，澳門人口密度一樣都大，但係澳門市民基本唔存在香港咁樣嘅大規模嘅細單位。就好似你有樓，你肯唔肯你層樓跌？380呎住三個人嘅家庭叫中產，尼個就係香港人嘅基本現狀。大陸地方政府強勢。要解決民生住屋，政府必須強勢。我就講一句，如果香港政府採取限購樓房，外國投資客，同外地客買樓，班中產一定上街。尼個就係你地個現狀。而且香港嘅面積係大過新加坡，但係開發嘅土地有冇，新界到現在仍然係鄉下。

HK warped economy is mostly service based (finance, banking related). To not know English is a death sentence. In other asian countries where manufacturing/high tech forms most of their economy, being bilingual is not as important. The problems outlined here is a result of the government failing to diversified the economy. The government's policies currently emphasizes on trade, tourism and finance which looks good on paper but produces very little real benefit to the people.
but at the same time hong kong is more a reflection of UK. Given the small size of hong kong the only economy is service based. Finance, banking, tourism etc... There isnt space and do not have comparative or competitive advantage over china as a manufacturing giant. UK has transformed from a industrial country to a service based. Niche product, finance, banking etc... Even car industry got taken over by german. So it is not govt policy it is a shift of time...
gabrielwong1991 Why should we be a reflection of the UK? Singapore is a small place yet both Intel and EA has R&D facilities there. The government is not proactive enough in attracting industry to come.

I think people hate others speaking english because they can't speak it well. Don't be afraid of something you can't master. Go and learn English well. Surround yourself with people that speaks it well. You would see the benefits of being able to speak more than 1 language.
theres nothing wrong with speaking good english, but that girl (who was raised in HK n both her parents r HKers) cant even speak a complete sentence in cantonese (which is supposed to b her mother tongue). thats the problem.

Most kids speak only English at home in Singapore. What's wrong with making English a household language?

My personal view is that bilingualism should be continued. Personally I don't understand why so many Singaporean parents intentionally only speaks English at home to their kids. Everything in Singapore is in English, isn't that enough exposure already? I would be ashamed if my children can't speak proper mandarin. For myself, I am trying to learn the dialect of my parents'. :)
+Dan C it is quite difficult to master two languages.... Chinese and Taiwanese focus very much on Chinese while Singaporean put much emphasis on English. Differently, it is a must to handle both Chinese and English for hongkongers. This leads to the fact that many hongkongers are not good at Chinese nor English.
Jere Cullen it would be no problem if your environment also an english speaking countries. but sadly, hong kong has been a cantonese speaking place, english has always been a 2nd language.

Richard, this is my personal view that I want to share with you. I commend you for using your personal time to help the underprivileged. I wish I could help. Hong Kong as a former British colony, in my opinion, is the worst in terms of over English understanding and fluency among the others; such as Singapore and India. It is ironic that HK; being the oldest colony, the importance of English education had not been placed as a priority for so many years by the government, even after the return in 97, the English curriculum in schools has been mediocre at best. It is obvious that this under-achievement is attributed to the failure of the government and the appointed officials. I don't deny that English is not an easy subject to learn, let alone mastering it. That said, it is completely possible if has a strong interest and devotion. I started learning English at 18 years old, literally from alphabets. I had stumbled for many months and wanted to quit. But I kept marching forward, one step at a time. In time, as I understood the rules of grammar, parts of speech, and how sentences were structured, I actually fell in love with this language. I have spent the last 20 years studying the linguistic aspect and tutored ESL level students online for free. HK, no doubts needs help in this area. My observation of the HK students, even at the university level, is not so favorable. Many mistakes are visible in public notices, on the bus, and in MTR stations. I wish people in HK can spending more time focusing on social matters such as English education and the grass-root population. This message is my appreciation for your effort. Keep up the good work. Anyone who has English questions can message me. I'll be glad to answer.
