Thank you for this clear and calm video. No theatrics, no ego. Just a good step by step instructions!

I have 5 years to perfect this. I am sure the mules will appreciate it when I run off into the mountains of Mexico. thanks for posting.

Todd, these videos have helped me a bunch. I've put my pack saddle on my stair railing and put panniers and mantee over - tied box hitch and diamond over and over in my living room with your vids as my guide. You're sharing knowledge that's hard to come by. Thank you for taking the time.

I learned your method from you several years ago and it has always worked great for me...thanks

    Todd,
Thank you for such a clear and concise video. The first time I tried to do this I thought I was trying to do calculus for ropes and I wish I would have had this video to go by!

If I'm not mistaken, the hitch on the hook is actually just a clove hitch with the ends adjacent instead of across from each other as is normally used.
Very neat, thanks! I've only seen this in a book, but I didn't know it was used on pack animals like this. What is that actually holding on?

A good diamond hitch is not just pretty, it rides better down the mountain much smoother than a box hitch in my experience

What size of rope do you use? What is the length of the rope for the diamond hitch?

Joe we use a 1/2 inch nylon 3 strand poly rope. All you need is 30 feet for most single diamonds, but I prefer a 40 ft rope so I can use it for a Double Diamond or Box Hitch if needed. Hope that helps...Happy Packing!!

nope, it's just a half hitch, that's just a round turn sitting next to it

Yeah sure. But, could you do that in the dark, after a few beers, when you are trying to get away quickly because the wife is yealing at ya? All kidding aside. Nice job. It isn't quite as easy as you make it look, but it's a good place to start learning if you don't have someone right there with you to show you how.
