If I'm not mistaken, the hitch on the hook is actually just a clove hitch with the ends adjacent instead of across from each other as is normally used. Very neat, thanks! I've only seen this in a book, but I didn't know it was used on pack animals like this. What is that actually holding on?
Joe we use a 1/2 inch nylon 3 strand poly rope. All you need is 30 feet for most single diamonds, but I prefer a 40 ft rope so I can use it for a Double Diamond or Box Hitch if needed. Hope that helps...Happy Packing!!

It isn't quite as easy as you make it look, but it's a good place to start learning if you don't have someone right there with you to show you how.

A good diamond hitch is not just pretty, it rides better down the mountain much smoother than a box hitch in my experience
what is the are the pro/cons of 1 and 2 ring hip plates?
