It seems as though there is evidence to support the idea that both Waite and Smith were able to see the Sola Busca deck during an exhibition at a local museum, which was actually the first deck to illustrate the minor arcana, there are a lot of similarities between the Smith deck and the Sola Busca deck.

Great video. Most of what I know about Smith and Waite was from the book "Secrets of the Waite-Smith Tarot". Many of the deck images were inspired by Smith's life in the theatrical world. The costumes and actor friends. The black cat on the Queen of Wands is modeled after her friends' cat, Snuffles.
