Frank killing himself in the crematorium was the actor's idea. James Karen (Frank) thought he should have a more original ending than just becoming another zombie, and the director agreed.
This is a pure 80s classic. Punk soundtrack, fast, intelligent zombies, Linnea Quigley's gravestone dance, the comedic prologue, all iconic.
Linnea Quigley makes anything better.
Add in the Tarman, the best zombie performance ever by Allan Trautman
This movie has maybe one of the most dangerous versions of zombies on screen, pretty much nothing gets rid of them without a chance of additional contamination... plus they're smart and can use tools and plan (calling on the radio knowing it'll bring more food)... every single part of them is alive even if you chop them up... truly terrifying. Also the slow deaths of the infected is almost hard to watch, really gotta hand it to the actors, they made a lot of comedy in a tragic situation, but still sold the pain they were in. This and it's sequel are some of the best lesser watched zombie movies... definitely informed my idea of cool as a young kid lol... Long-live the Punk Rock Zombies!
Oh, and you mentioned how strong they are... that's sort of an underarticulated danger with zombies... even if they are slow, they don't get tired or feel pain which means they no longer have limiters in place to stop them from biting as hard as a rottweiler or grabbing so hard with their fingers they scrape flesh and nail off, almost sharpening them... basically every zombie is the mom that lifts the car off their kid to save them, except they're trying to rip you apart and eat you instead.
I've always thought so myself, just the most terrifying zombies put to film. I'd expect nothing less from military grade zombies 😱🧠🧟
Peter Jackson's Braindead/Dead Alive movie is arguably more dangerous with it's zombies than this.

It could also be said that Re-Animator shares the same universe and the Trioxin serum could be the same since the zombies have the same characteristics.
The ending scene with the boyfriend bursting through the trapdoor and his echoing "Tiiiiinnnnnnnaaaaaa....", the whistling and the zombies standing staring at the sky is one of the creepiest moments I've ever seen in a movie. Still get chills.
I'm fine with Trash stripping, not gonna lie...
The zombies in this are super terrifying. Not just because they are smart enough to problem solve and talk, but because of how indestructible they are(even burning them to nothing just makes more of them with the smoke).
And then everyone died........

One of my all time favourite movies! Hilarious and shocking in equal measure: "The Brain! The Brain!" "I hit the F*cking Brain!" I think this is the first time I ever saw running zombies in a movie, actually. Gave me the heebie jeebies. Talking of running zombies, I shall now mention REC again, as that seems like what I do now. So: REC.

Now you need to see 'Dawn of the Dead' (1978). It's so good. Great cast of characters. It's also a semi sequel to Night of the Living Dead (like this was), but really, it can be watched as a stand alone Zombie movie just like here.

That intro sequence with Frank accidentally letting Trioxin out, infecting him and Freddy and letting Tarman reanimate, with that badass music and the cadaver twitching in the freezer is just pure greatness. Love this movie to death!
Linnea Quigley (who played the naked girl Trash) was known for being naked in horror movies in the 80s. She’s super funny and down to earth in interviews and has great stories.
Yeah, they didn't make her go naked for most of the movie. They LET her. Can't keep clothes on her if you try.
Perpetual smile on my face watching Kat only interrupted by the periotic involuntary laughs. So good at this. Reminds me of one of my favorite old shows, Mystery Science Theater

If you hadn't seen her in anything else, this is quite the introduction to Linnea Quigley. She is usually very ... generous with herself in her movies, but this is probably her best known role.
James Karen's performance when he's telling Freddy about the corpses downstairs is so fun to watch. He does an amazing job of getting you warmed up for the insanity that's to follow
I feel like that's the movie's core strength aside of the sometimes amazing special effects. The central performances and how they're filmed and edited are leading to great story telling and tension. At least regarding the story that develops inside that compound they're working in.
The events on the outside are a lot less convincing...to me.
Fun fact, George A. Romero and Jack Russo both took part in the writing of black and white Night Of The Living Dead. After which they had different ideas of how the follow up films should be. George A. Romero went on to write Dawn Of The Dead and Jack Russo started the Return Of The Living Dead series.
John, not Jack, Russo's script was totally different, and not good at all. It was on the web years back. Glad it was completely rewritten by O'Bannon.
Yes! This is my #1 favorite zombie film. Perfect balance of horror, comedy, music, and…BRAINS!!!

Man did I love this movie growing up, it was my favorite . Not only was it scary with lots of gore, but hilarious as hell too. Such an under-rated and under-appreciated gem of a movie. Thank you for reacting to it, I've been asking in the comments since the 1st week of your channel to do this one here, and it was definitively worth the wait. Such a great reactor, smart, pretty ,funny, and so into the whatever it is your viewing, your dialogue thru-out is so funny, as well as right on point, and I can't get enough of that gigantic smile of yours. Fun trivia: This movie is the first time zombies are portrayed as craving brains, specifically. Now it is a trope that zombies eat brains, but this was where it all started. :-) Also, those moving body parts in the bags were partially disassembled toy monkeys that clap the cymbals together, if I remember correctly. They just used the toy motors to cause the motion of the "body parts."
First depiction of zombies actually talking as well. Can't think of another example.

@@JP1234815 ROTLD came out a month later than Day in 1985. Return kicked Day's ass at the box office with Return on a thousand more screens. And this was going against "Pee-Wee's Big Adventure" and "Back to the Future" Summer of '85 was a great time at the movies, heh heh.

This is one of my favorite Horror Movies of all time. I strongly recommend Night of the Creeps, Night of the Comet, & Night of the Demons; they are very similar in style, tone and atmosphere.
All great recommendations! My wife and I really wanna do a couple's outfit of the prom date with the flamethrower (from Creeps) for Halloween
Glad you enjoyed this and recognized it as a ridiculous, fun horror comedy. This is the movie that created the trope of the zombie exclaiming "Brains!"
Since you liked this and enjoy Zombies, I'm going to make a recommendation that I wouldn't give to everyone. PLEASE react to Peter Jackson's "DEAD ALIVE: UNRATED CUT". MUST be the Unrated version. And yes, THAT Peter Jackson that directed "LORD OF THE RINGS". It was one of his earliest, if not first film, and is one of the most over-the-top zombie/comedies you will ever see. Guaranteed. You have been warned. lol
DEAD ALIVE is the greatest. So many classic moments. It's amazing on every level. Unrated version only.

Yeah... about that Peter Jackson movie.... I know You can handle gore - Kat... but this one is the goriest movie ever. Sometimes even my stomach turns. Personally I advise against it. ;)

That touching moment where James Karen takes off his wedding ring and sets it on the furnace was his idea, improvised on the day. He was an under-appreciated actor who appeared in many great films.

I think the tarman zombie is by far Kat's favorite character out of all the movies she's watched so far. "Its inside slop is on the outside." 😄🤢

The great character actor who plays the boss that gets called was a really great guy. Met him a few times at the New Beverly Cinema here in Hollywood. He was a regular after he retired from acting. The theater is now owned by Quentin Tarantino, and Clu makes an appearance as the book shop owner in Once Upon A Time in Hollywood. Sadly, he passed away over a year ago.
I thought the baseball bat moment was a high point for Clu! Was shocked to see him in the Tarantino, didn't know he was still around, always seemed to be in cowboy stuff when I was a kid.

I saw it for the first time on VHS in college and was absolutely blown away by its humor and its horror, definitely one of my favorites. Undoubtedly someone on the Simpson's writing staff was a fan as this was the first movie to introduce the "zombies eat brains" trope that would be picked up and popularized by one of the early Simpson's "Treehouse of Horror," Halloween anthology episodes.
I remember when the movie was released all of the tv and radio ads included the zombies calling out for brains. As a rather sheltered young teen I didn't pick up on the idea that it was going to be a comedy to a degree and those ads scared the heck out of me.
I was fortunate enough to catch this in the theater, with a few friends, after an awesome afternoon of skateboarding at an empty parking garage. It was a great Sunday..🙂
The character Ernie was based on escaped NotZee Ernst Kaltenbrunner. You can see a picture of Eva Braun and he is singing Panzer's in the Springtime(song sung about the French campaign) as he is embalming. If I recall correctly Dan O'Bannon confirmed this in interviews later. I think Ernie's interest in the zombies feelings has to do with is evil past due to what the Germans did and now him knowing how it feels to be d**d is fascinating. Just a tiny bit of lore for this awesome movie, this scared the pee out of me seeing this growing up lol!

Yours and everyone else's favorite zombies is named Tarman. The black stuff on it is it's skin, from being in that tank the skin melted forming a tear like substance, hence Tar Man. Also the reason why he was moving the way he was was because his bones had nothing to hold them together, just the melted skin. So basically when it moved, the bones were sliding onto each other. It was just a corpse that was basically a skeleton with toxic tar holding it together Thank u so much for watching this. It is my favorite zombie of all time and I love it. U really made my day. Glad u liked it.
Everyone loves Tarman. If he could give the brain eating a rest, I'd party with him any time. He would be a trip at open salsa night😀

Such a great film to react to. I haven't seen anyone else post this one. Props to you. James Karen's opening scene where he explains to the kid how "Night of the Living Dead" was based on a true story is such an awesome setup for this adventure. James Karen deserved an award for his performance. He helps take this movie to another level. Thinking that if you liked this one so much, you need to give "Re-Animator" a try. Buckle up for that one!

Buckle up can pretty much be said about any of the at least 25 movies that are based on the works of H.P. Lovecraft. You should have mentioned the sequels "Bride of Re-Animator" and "Beyond Re-Animator" since she hasn't seen those.
Great reaction, Kat. I've been a fan of this gem since it was released. Had a massive crush on Linnea Quigley (Trash, the naked punk chick) because this movie and her extensive b-movie filmography. I love how Night of the Living Dead the movie exists in the universe of this film. Oh, there are 4 sequels.
Night of the Living Dead was made by George Romero (director, writer), Russell Streiner (producer), and John Russo (co-writer).

This one is so magical. It's balance of horror and comedy, leveraging Night of but making something new, the outstanding performances of everyone.
On that note, this also has the distinction of having an amazing sequel hook in Return of the Living Dead Part 2. I won't ruin it for you other than to say you'll see some familiar faces. It's as bonkers as Evil Dead 2 in terms of meta-filmmaking in sequels.

Linnea Quigley spends a lot of her roles pretty much naked. Part of what made her one of the first scream queens.
The "tar man" zombie is one of the most iconic zombies in horror film. He familiarized the whole zombies want brains thing. My favorite zombie too hahah such a cool iconic design.

Our "Nudie Booty" Friend ... LOL!!! She's the iconic Linnea Quigley and she had a long career getting Nudie in Campy Horror movies in the 80s and 90s. To this day, she still shows up to Conventions for Horror Enthusiasts.

This was such a fun Zombie movie. Easily my favorite! And I really developed an appreciation for legwarmers after this movie! 😋

What was in the bags, Kat, was a whole bunch of those mechanical monkeys with the cymbals, except the cymbals were removed so they didn't make any sound.

Yeah, this is my favorite zombie-related anything. I only saw it a couple of years ago compared to other stuff I've seen but it ticks all the boxes for me. Comedy, sex, horror, writing, and even sticks the landing with the ending. Other than the rage zombies from the 28 days later series we would be most screwed if this zombie scenario happened.
Don Calfa is the unsung hero of this film. His role as the (possibly neo-Nazi) mortician is one of the most human and sympathetic. His scene with the half-zombie still sends chills down my spine.
He was also great in The Star Chamber (1983) with Michael Douglas and in Weekend at Bernie's (1989).
The melted zombie from the military drum in the basement of the warehouse is named Tarman, and he is one of the most iconic named zombies in horror history.

Great reaction Kat! You, I think appreciated this movie more and was scared by it less. Are you becoming a horror fangirl? I have a warm heart for this movie because an acquaintance of mine, Jewel Shepard, played Casey, the teen in blue with multicolored hair. She and many cast members go to horror conventions to meet the fans. And believe me, there are still many many fans of this great movie!
This is my favorite horror movie of all time. Punk rock meets zombies meets comedy and over the top blood. The actor the plays Trash (red hair) is Linnea Quigley a scream queen and icon in the horror cult following. She was in a lot of b movie horror and still travels to conventions. Love this movie. Part 1 and 3 are my favorites of the series.
Hi Kat! Awesome reaction I loved it. You are always so cute in your reactions, but this one was especially adorable!!! I saw this movie when it first came out and I've always loved it! I've seen this movie several times and that phone ringing gets me every time. The actress who played "Trash" is Linea Quigley, she is one of the original scream queens. And she has no problem doing nudity. She has been nude or topless in almost everything I've seen her in. The soundtrack is available to buy. I have it on cassette, the music is awesome!

I’ve been championing this film since I first saw it in cinemas in 1985. I was 16 and loved it so much, I went back the next day to see it again.
Trash (aka the naked chick) is legendary B Movie Scream Queen Linnea Quigley, she’s made (and still making) more low budget films than you’d believe and usually ended up nude. 😂 probably best known for Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers (starring with leather face himself Gunnar Hansen)

I saw it when I was 6 years old and it scared the crap out of me.
I thought it was a very interesting concept behind like they really can't kill the zombies no matter what they do except for burn them or storing them in those canisters.
Definitely for me and sit in my top 10 greatest zombie movies of all time
Freddy and Frank should have been considered for Oscar's. Their pain looks insanely believable. I love how the characters talk over each other like people do in real life. Does anyone else think that Ernie was possibly part of the SS?

They did use a clip of James Karen from this movie in the In Memorium on the Oscars when Karen died.
It's hilarious in some horror movies how skeletal zombies without lips can somehow speak completely normally and clearly, as they had done when they were still alive-- and they can miraculously pronounce words featuring the letters w, p, m, v, b, and so on. Try saying words with those letters without using your lips, LOL.
I'll never forget the first time I saw this, on a VHS tape back in the day. Stuff like "Send more cops" sent me into fits of laughter. Very good script by Dan O'Bannon (writer of the 1979 thriller "Alien").
Also want to give kudos for the music score to Matt Clifford, and also to Francis Haines who did the theme tune (aka Trioxin Theme). Very effective.
Your favorite - the 'googly zombie' aka Tarman, is a puppeteer named Allan Trautman. He's still active in movies!

the Zombies in this film series have to be the most frightening in of all. not only are they quick but they are smart add to the the fact that there is no real way to eliminate them (other than dismemberment then containment) and you have one nasty enemy.

Highly recommended the original 1978 Dawn of the Dead (sequel to Night of the Living Dead) my all time favorite zombie movie…also the slimy zombie you loved is called “Tarman” and he has a lot of merch and toys of him if you’re interested haha

Trust me. "Tar Man" zombie is everyone's favorite.
Also when you see them eating brains, those were real raw cow brains. They paid the actors more if they agreed to eat them and the director ate some first to show them it wouldn’t kill them. He’s dead now.
Not from that, but it does make the story funnier if you pause before explaining that.

If you like zombies, DAWN OF THE DEAD (1978), is the platonic ideal. Gory, shocking, charming, and deep-George A Romero’s masterpiece.
Hot take: Romero's underpinning theme of "humans are the real monsters" isn't anywhere near as charming or deep as people say it is and his attempts to conflate zombie/human dynamics with racism are something I'd expect out of a stoned liberal arts sophomore, not a respected filmmaker.

I do think argument from popularity is a bad argument, though, because fame does not equal quality. Just look at the respective fates of Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla.

That wet and slimy one in the basement absolutely traumatized me as a kid. Seems kinda cheap by today’s standards, but to 10 year old me in the 80’s… yeah this was next level practical effects.
To this day I still have a hard time looking at it lol.
Tarman still holds up today he traumatized a lot of us as kids I was 12 when I saw it in 85 and I was never the same lol

hahaha This movie was SO good. Me and my wife saw it in a theater that was re showing it for a Halloween fest around 1989. Was awesome. We quoted this movie for decades afterwards. "Send MORE paramedics" and "More brains!" hahaha"I know you're in there I can smell your brains!!!"

This movie was Written and Directed by ALIEN creator, writer and supervising visual consultant, the Late Dan O'Bannon. This movie was his directorial Debut, but he only directed 2 other movies in his career. This movie was the one that introduced the "Brain eating Zombies" as opposed to the regular flesh eating ones. So without O'Bannon, there would had never been ALIEN nor Brain eating Zombies.
This was my favorite movie as a kid. I still know the script word for word, I have seen the movie well over a hundred times. Thanks so much for watching ROTLD. I am so glad I found your channel!

This movie was the first to introduce brain eating zombies to the genre. Before then, they were all flesh eaters.

You should watch 'Doctor Sleep.' Its a Stephen King horror movie and sequel to 'The Shining'. It's a modern masterpiece directed by one of the best modern horror movie directors of this time 'Mike Flanagan'. I would very much enjoy your reaction given that you have one of the very best reaction channels on TH-cam by a mile. Hope you read this comment. And the sequel to 'House of 1000 corpses' (The DEVILS REJECTS) would be a treat too. Byeeeee.

The Return of the Living Dead is by far one of the greatest Zombie movies ever made, and a horror classic as well.
It's the perfect amount of silly camp and fun gore. It doesn't take itself too seriously but never takes you out of the movie either. Definitely a 10/10.

Great reaction Kat. You can try Invasion of the Body Snatchers. It's been done a few times. My favorite is 1978, followed by the original from 1956. The 2007 version was pretty good too.
The comedy duo of the coworkers was so funny they brought them back for part 2 (under different names obviously). Me and friends in grade school watched this a lot. Fun movie
Every time I see Frank, Bert, and the trainee trying to stop the green zombie, I can't help but think I'm watching a modern version of the Three Stooges. Also got to love the Sesame Street reference with the characters Bert and Ernie.
Several years ago back when we were working in the office, my department (employee tech-support call center for a large bank) had our main call center on one side of Columbus with our backup call center on the other side of town at our recovery operations building. I occasionally went over there to make sure our PCs were working and updated, and sometimes coworkers would go over for the day so that they would be familiar where things were in the event of a disaster. While there were some offices over there, typically it would be just you on the third floor and the security guard down at the front desk. The building, except for the front door and front parking lot, was surrounded by a fence with barbed wire on top.
One day, a friend of mine, relatively new to the bank, was over there alone working and started messaging me to talk between calls. He mentioned that it was kind of spooky over there. That's when this James Karen's story at the beginning of this movie popped into my head. I told my coworker that I was spooked because of the bodies in the basement. Basically, I came up with a story that prior to the 1960s, the building had been owned by the army (hence the fence and security) and that there had been a test going on at OSU by the university and the army where a chemical spill had reanimated some corpses, the bodies were put in cannisters and stored in the basement of our backup building, and when the army cleared out and sold the building to us, the cannisters were so hidden that they were missed. I said that only a few of us that had been there a while knew about the cannisters and that we weren't supposed to talk about it. Meanwhile, I'm texting another coworker who had been friends with the victim...er...coworker outside of work. I told her "If Paul asks about bodies in the basement of the backup center, just tell him that we're not supposed to talk about it." She laughed and said OK. So, by this point, the coworker's curiosity was getting the best of him, and on his morning break, he went looking for the basement and the bodies. As he discovered, there are no bodies, and there is no basement in that building.
One of my coworkers has described it as the best prank ever played in our department.
