I really enjoyed the effort you put in this video! The audio was great, and also the information structure and it's relevance, like noise and consumption really added value (as well as the user interface of the heater).
I fitted a 5kw to my camper.. fuel consumption was dire. So I turned it down to 1.5 Hz!! Incidentally, the icon pictured above the heater element is the temperature read cut off sensor. And you should be able to get the actual surface temp of the combustion/heat exchanger element by clicking the OK button a few times. I've a similar control unit, but without the clock/timer component
I’ve just installed a 5kw in my Landy 110, so far all good. I’ve replaced the fuel line that came with it to genuine eberspacher lime and hoses. The supplied line was letting air in. Great vids so far laddie 👍
Thank you for your awesome and through testing. You convinced me. Im off to buy one now. You should be getting a kick back for the sales you are giving them :)
0.8hz is a bit too low for the 5kw , it comes preset at 1.2hz , you want at least one of the red bars lit up on low to avoid soot build up when using diesel, but preferably all bars still lit up on low, a bit of fine tuning to get best results. 👍
Thanks for the vid. Was about to buy the 8KW off Amazon but just noticed that the Afterburner is not compatible with Hchalory heaters. The non-reactive buttons on that LCD would wind me up!!
Thanks for doing this comparison. If there is anyway you could compare the heat output between the two heaters that would be great (E.g. the time it takes for each to heat up the same space by e.g. 5 degrees or something like that, from the same starting temperature of course) . Theoretically the 8kw heater should give out 4 times as much heat as the 2kw version, but at less than double the consumption (at full blast) so you essentially get much cheaper heat from the 8kw than the 2kw. Add to that the much less noisy running of the 8kw and it should, at face value, be quite clear that the 8kw is the best choice for warming up a bigger space like e.g. a caravan, minibus/bus, or a workshop, but possibly also quite an overkill for a regular car or van?
As I was once told. If you buy a heater that's too big you can always turn it down. But if it's too small you can't make it any hotter. Also the 8kw in near silent compared to the 2kw, and it's not the fan caught on a cable. I don't really have a space suitable, ideally you'd want to install them in a caravan and time them for how long they took to reach a temperature and how much fuel they used. Buying a caravan for testing is a little overkill for me. :)
@@DavidMcLuckie Thanks! You have certainly done enough already so even if buying a caravan would be cool I do agree that it would be overkill. I suppose that my suggestion was meant towards finding out if the 8kw actually produces 4 times more heat. Apart from that you are of course right, that you can always turn down an 8kw but not turn a 2kw up above the 2kw. I think I shall get myself an 8kw for my shed, just to take the chill out of the air, and keep everything nice and dry in there.
Hey , i also thought about this decision. I want to use it for my VW Bus. I am in fear if i take the 8kw Version and i turn it do idel at low heat it gets broken because of the low burning temprature cause a lot more unburned black Diesel left of instead of running a 2 kW at the ideal Burning temperature for longer times.any Experience ?
@@TheHenne17 , Is this a living or holiday situation? If living, unless you already have a contingency/backup plan, get both. They are supposedly not so well made. And it'll still be cheaper than getting a western equivalent. One needs to be the backup to the other. And a VW bus has a poor insulation situtation so for winter living a dry-heat backup plan is crucial.
I m also at the same point trying to understand if i should go for the 2 or 5 or 8kw version for my VW bus. So far i ve understood that it would be better if it would burn at a higher temp. But for me the noise factor is also quite a consideration, although i think i ll try to mount it somewhere outside the living space, so if the 8kw is quieter this will be my choice, and i will be doing the turning up to full for a small period trick, in order to burn up the soot.
I just discovered your amazing channel! I live in a camper and I have a 5kw set to work at 0.8hz for economic reasons, but a smell of unburned diesel comes out of the muffler, do you know which are the best settings for that frequency? It's been the second year that I've used it in this way and it's never blocked but the combustion chamber however is colder and this worries me a bit about possible encrustations, I thought that the outlet pipe could be coupled with the inlet one to create a preheating, but the fear of an uncontrolled positive feedback stopped me. What do you think? PS sorry for my english i used gtranslate
I bought a 2kw, and received the carbon fibre effect one, set to 5hz (5kw) but it can be set from 3hz to 8hz. Wouldn't of minded the smaller one as its for a small van!
LambySRI how are you getting on with your heater, I’ve just ordered an 8kw for my small van , wondering if I’ve gone over the top a bit , want it mainly to defrost the van quickly in the winter , But also if I have a tent over the side door it should heat that ok
@@BrothersGrim2012 I had a 5k and it cooked inside the van on tick over (mercedes Vito long) so got a 2k able to survive well at -6 at the moment with no issues.
@@philipwiseman9446 Thanks Philip! I've been trying to find someone with experience to answer this question!!!!! Last thing I want to do is peel a window wide open just to maintain temperature.
so about 600watts (0.6Kw) of the lowest and 4.3Kw on the highest setting! probably some energy lost through the exhaust so these would be maximum numbers
David you are quite the scientist. BRAVO Could you please show us your CO.detector, and an open door... I'm nervous seeing the exhaust so close to you. I would love to see a thermometer in your test area. Thanks again
Carbon monoxide takes a while to kill you. You have headaches, blurred vision etc before you are anywhere near fatal level. That's why it kills people in there sleep, you aren't aware of the symptoms before death if you sleep through them. Literally all I'd need to do is open the door and walk outside.
By the math these are a touch over 27,000 BTU for this 8kw unit and you are about spot on according to the Manuel of .6 ml at full speed. Fantastic video on this unit, best one I have seen so far! Thank you!! Maybe we can somehow use the heat of the exhaust to warm something? Make it even more efficient as that exhaust gets pretty dang warm.
Cheers David. You have inspired me to put one in my caravan👍 Great video as always bud. Very straight forwardly explained Oh and thanks for the fuel maths work out 😜stay safe ☮️
Great comparison have you any suggestions on the the air filter and how to quieten howling type of noise seem to be more quieter when the silencer is removed but it's still there
Great job but 1 minute 39 seconds is equal to 1.65 minutes.99/60) And...(60min/1hr)/(1.65 min /10ml)= consumption, 60/(0.165hr/ml)= consumption, 363.4 ml/hr= consumption. In one hour your consumption will be 363.4ml or .363L/hour. That would give you approximately 27 hours on a 10L tank at full blast. On lowest setting would burn 167 hours which would give you seven days of burn on 10L.
I have another suggestion. These are Diesel heaters, so they burn Diesel, yes the clue is in the name ??? Is there a difference to the type of diesel ? by that I mean, Shell V+ or BP Ultimate or Shopping branded diesel. Does the type of fuel from the pump make any difference of burning, smell, smoke and amount it uses, make any difference ? Thanks
I like this video! Lots of usable data here. I am installing the larger unit in my RV. The heaters are quieter, smaller and more efficient than the old propane unit that I removed.
was recommended by a mate tae hae a squint at your vid. Well impressed, thinking about it for a poly tunnel. Couple o questions, what fuels can it use, eg waste veg oil, or even fresh veg oil fae the cash n carry. Also is it worth running the exhaust gasses through a heater matrix? Excellent stuff BTW
My question: If you set it to use the thermostat, will it shut off when it gets to the set temperature (stop producing heat) then fire back up when the temperature gets lower? If so, how many degrees is it between turn off and turn on when compared to the set temperature?
Need around 40 BTU's per square foot of space you want to heat. The smaller one 2KW (6,000 BTU's) would be good for around 150 square feet (if insulated). Most vans are only going to be around 110 square feet or less so the larger ones would have very short run times and the burn chamber will soot up and you will have to take it apart to clean it. Need to size what you want to heat up so it works properly.
Difficult to answer. But you could test with a 2KW electric fan heater. If that doesn't heat the area to the temperature you want and keep it there, you'd need to go bigger. Fuel consumption would depend on the settings of the heater but a rough estimate would be 500ml per hour.
You can't believe any of the product specs from Chinese sellers. I have the larger version which is identical to the one in the video except it is marked on the sticker as a 1KW ~ 5KW.
Having watched all videos known to man about Chinese diesel heaters i can confirm for all comment readers to save you many boring lockdown days of watching exciting diesel heater vidz!! The best heater to buy for cost ie purchase, diesel consumption and power consumption is the 5KW that's the same size as the 8KW has lcd controller and remote stays running constantly on low when your space is up to temperature as constantly turning on and off is bad for these heaters and makes them heavy on fuel and power. Tip fit the fuel pump to the outside of your vehicle and don't fit it solidly to your vehicle leave hanging if possible as vibration and noise will enter your vehicle. Pumps like a very loud ticking clock also pipe lagging will dull the noise. Thank me later 🥱
Perfect. One thing I'd like to add is that if possible fit the whole thing (heater and fuel pump) at the opposite end of the van you sleep at. Just being that few metres away makes a huge difference in the sound.
Love this, mine turned up yesterday, fitted on the boat today. On startup the thing was smoking (white) like mad. I think it was a mixture of air getting into the fuel pipe (could see the bubbles and had a little fuel leakage on one of the connections) and playing with the settings it sorted itself right out. Looking forward to going back tomorrow now to play more with the settings I.e the low and high pump and hz settings.
Hi David. Thanks for your time spend to help us. I am planning to buy one for my small van. What heater size do you think I need? How many hours will it work before draining the battery or being able to start my van? Will work for 6 hours or leisure battery is a must? Hope I will get the answer. Cheers.
Hello Mr David. Please tell what is the smallest battery that I should buy to run the 2 kw heater for a nights camping. We are going on a motorbike and hope to carry a heater and a battery in the panniers. Thank you. J
Hi David, watched the videos fantastic made my mind up to get one. Question I have is tge cable came with a 3 pin for the controller and a 2 pin for the oil pump switch but this has 3 wires!!!! Do you know if the oil pump controller only needs just the red and black? Cheers Andy
Very good video, covering almost everything people will want to know, like size, consumption, even some faults (button pressing). This 8kw does sound like a much better unit, mainly the quietness of the pump, which other reviews have shown to be very noisy. One question, the consumption, at low setting, how long would it run and use a full tank that comes with it (wasnt sure what the tank size is in litres)? I have now placed and order for a 8kw, which I found on eBay, as your link doesn't work anymore. Thanks for a great review and helping decide on the unit.
Was thinking of buying a 8kw (or a 5kw if they send the wrong one?) For my 5m x 5m workshop? Could I ask if you think it would be man enough to do the job, also what would be the best way to run 12v to it? Your vids are outstanding and really do the leg work for use mear mortols! Cheers Mick
Hi David. Loving the videos very entertaining and of course informative. Two quick questions. Firstly I’ve put a hole for exhaust and twin wall sleeve to go outside. Apparently I’m best to put intake outside too due to if heat exchanger fails then exhaust fumes would enter room via air intake. Secondly how mould you compare the Chinese copies in general to more expensive ‘possibly over priced’ brands. Thanks.
Do you mean take the combustion air from outside? Exhaust fumes aren't the reason I'd use outside air. If you use the air inside the space you are heating, all you are doing is sucking the air your heating back into the heater and sending it outside down the exhaust. Which means outside (cold air) has to get back in to the space you are heating. If someone can show me that a Webasto / Eberspacher is ten times better than these heaters I'd be interested.
The 8Kw.unit seems to be heaps more efficient for the outputs, what do you think about the possibilities of using these units for hydronic floor heating? Great vid and review, thanks for sharing.
Great video! thank you. I am trying to heat a tent 10L x 10W x 7H feet. Say 700 cubic feet what size heater will keep it comfortable? Thin walls 2 layer 4 season tent with full rain fly. I wish to camp in snow. Temps some times below zero the coldest I have seen is -15 deg f in my area but is not normal. 2kw, 5kw 8kw 12kw ?
I couldn't tell you exactly but I can narrow your options. There are only two heater sizes, the 2KW and the 5KW. Anything else is just making up numbers. I'd rather have too big a heater and have to crack the tent open rather than too small.
Just bought the 8 k one my caravan pleased to here it is more quiet just hope it is not to hot for the caravan we will see at weekend after l fit it , would you use it on red Deisel instead of white or not
Hi David, I have a 5kw heater I'm going to externally fit under my VW T5. It has x2 80mm air ducting pipes, one for the air intake and the other fot the hot air supply. Can I use 60mm ducting pipework to make the installation easier. If not can I use the 80mm ducting then under the van then change to 60mm as it enters the van. The internal pipework would only be 15cm on the air supply and about 35cm on the hot air. Thanks. Peter.
Hi my heater is TS D2 apparently its the 8 kw model ,it appears to have the measurements of the 8 ,but has a little one button press remote, it seems strange that it doesn't come with the fancy remote with several buttons as it's the biggest model, does it seem right to you .
in a video of yours, YOU HAVE STATED EXPLICITLY THAT THE MATH DOES NOT COMPUTE!, AND THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS AN 8KW VERSION OFA DESIEL HEATER. i amnow totally confused! Please explain>
David can you do video seeing if the fuel settings after tuning are saved on the ecu or in the controller as I've tuned mine with the digital controller but quickly swapping to the rotary as its running produces black smoke and CO readings go through the roof.
Thanks for the video's some interesting findings you've come up with. I bought two of the 8kw models for my bus conversion and I'm preparing to install them but finding the right locations for them has been a challenge I'm curious on how many feet of discharge heater hose I can safely put on the units before they might be ineffective say 10 to 15 feet by the time the heat comes out the ends. Or should I even worry about that the other problem I'm coming across is finding the hose in those lengths that is safe. Everything I've seen looks like it would just melt I'd really like to get your feed back on this and a possible supplier If you know of any were I could get the right product? Oh I'm planning on running both units off my main fuel tanks one unit would be about 5 feet from the tank and the other would be around 20 feet would you put check valves on the fuel lines? So I won't take any risk of losing the prime on them? Thanks for the videos and insight its been very helpful.
20ft might be too far to pump fuel for the heater. I think something like 5M is the max length and that's for a straight run. Lengths of duct are available but they are expensive.
Hello , do you know a method to start/stop remotley whith a sonoff relay(from phone ewelink...) I want to use it at a cabin in mountain and I want very much too start it 2-3 hours in advance of arriving.Thank You.
Hi there I have replaced a 5kw to a 2kw chinese diesel heater i only replaced the unit and kept the wiring connections from the 5 kw for the 2kw wich seemed to work the 2nd day tried to start it up the fan unit comes on when I'm priming the unit if I try to start it comes up with e06 its not the fan.is it because the wiring unit is different from the 2kw and 5kw any help would be eppriceated thank you steve
As a fellow yank, I’ve got the same question. The answer might be to create a “dope sheet” for a conversion of Celsius to Fahrenheit, or as AvE calls it “Science to Frankenstein”. Frankly, Celsius is easier to understand but a reason why Fahrenheit might be better is more degrees, so 70 degrees F is easier than 21.111 degrees C. In the end, it’s just a different scale, though.
The fuel usage does not seem to stack up. By my math 1 litre of diesel contains 10kw of energy so if it only uses 430ml of fuel an hour it is at best 4.3kw output and more likely 3.5kw when you take into account inefficiency. Eberspacher on the other hand quote fuel useage of 1.05 l/hr on their 8kw heater which would be more realistic. So my question is is the 430ml an hr accurate or is the heat output closer to 3.5kw?
I'd say my fuel calculations are reasonably accurate. And I'm glad you've brought this up. The 2kw heater matches the stated output roughly. I wonder if the LCD controllers come set at one setting and don't get changed whether you buy a 5kw or an 8kw. I don't think I maxed out the fuel settings on the controller so I might revisit this once I get a chance. Thank you for your intelligent discourse.
David McLuckie Thanks for coming back to me so quickly, I was looking to replace an eberspacher unit with one of these, and 8kw is really a minimum requirement. Hoping the 8kw was accurate and the 430ml was low
i have fitted a new 5kw chinese heater to my motorhome. cant work out the digital controle panel keeps coming up E I or e 10. i have plenty of power so it cant be low battery. can i change the panel out to fit an ordinery one with 2 buttons and a knob for temp controle
You can, but the rotary one uses the same error detection and message. Only it lights LEDs instead of a code number. Is there a possibility the LCD controller is set to 24V? The same controllers work on 12V or 24V it's just a change in the settings.
Hi Dave looking to buy one of these heaters for a camper which is a lwb Peugeot boxer my question is seen as you've done quite a bit of testing which heater size would be best to buy 2kw,5kw or 8kw and how long would one of there tanks last with fuel? Thanks for the videos very interesting 👍🏻
@@DavidMcLuckie excellent thanks for the quick reply I've another question for you if you don't mind, the new water/air diesel heater you've just tested could it work for a shower in a van or is it just for heating the engine for cold start? I'm a bit of a novice but planning a camper build excuse the dumpness 🙈
Running the heater on a low settings over time will soot them up inside. if you run them flat out for 2 - 3 mins every time you turn the heater off will help keep it clean inside.
mine is an 8 kw although it does go upto 8.0 in settings , it will run at 8.0 max 223c but when you shut it down and restart it will not fire up on 8.0(any settings), 6.0 yes works great i have the black controller all green digits. so same as you they are rebadged 5kw heaters
Fitted one today for my garage. Brilliant great value for money. I think even for a small van I would go for the 8kw version. Also the button issue is not a button issue it’s how fast the processor is scanning the buttons..PUSHING THEM HARDER DOES NOT MAKE THEM WORK QUICKER 😂😎 same as jamming a car ignition key round on a car with an old battery lol.. enjoy your videos.
Hi David, thanks for your video. It did help me with some points I haven't thought about. I purchased an even cheaper version of the 8kw model. The only problem is that it doesn't come with: fuel pump, fuel tank, fuel filter, fuel pipe, exhaust pipes for burner chamber, neither duct pipes. First question: What are the model/brand of the fuel pump and fuel filter? What about the other pipes?
Do you have a link to the seller? Awesome informative video. I heard ppl say they were all the same, just were called different sizes, 2kw-8kw. I have nearly bought one twice, thanks for the video..

very nice video thank a lot , i have just a question when you pump all the fuel , there is an automatiquely and safe slow stopping stage or not ? ( it's in case i fall in sleep ) thank joël ( belgium )
No brand in particular. I got one the other day for a camper install which the fan housing hit the case so hard it stopped spinning. 30 seconds with a grinder fixed it. So whatever you buy test it before you fit it. :)
I have a question. Is the outlet/inlet fittings the same configuration on both of them? In other words could you interchange one for the other in an installation without needing tho drill new holes? Thanks
How sure are you that the exhaust is 200c? You said 200 in the video but it was hard to tell how accurate that reading might have been. Do you feel you got a good reading on it? I'm wanting to insulate the pipe where it goes through the hole. Fiberglass pipe insulation would probably easily work if it is actually only 200c. Maybe not though if it is actually much hotter than that.
Without an accurate thermocouple I can only tell you what the IR thermometer says. Bearing in mind it sat and ran on two cardboard boxes right next to the exhaust, neither of which has any scorching. So the 200c will be about right.
David, do you have a copy of the manual ? I,m trying to find out what SN1 and SN2 settings are for ......I have a 5Kw unit labeled up as a 3Kw, fueling was originally 1.5 and 5.5 hz, altered this to 1 and 5 Hz and it runs great, it would be interesting to test the exhaust gasses with a wide band sensor to see how efficient the fuel is burning at various settings though !! These should only soot up if they are over fueling at the lower level relevant to the fan speed, pretty much the same as any other combustion cycle, there is a shut down process to follow which runs them at 100% maximum temperature for 10 minutes to burn off any sooting, I do this every time I,ve run the heater for a extended time such as all night.
It's how many magnets are on the impeller fan for detecting the speed. Two magnets is SN2. Two magnets with alternate polarity or only one magnet is SN1.
Good video David, currently looking into buying one of the 8kw, I haven't checked yet but was hoping to put it under the drivers or passenger seat in my merc sprinter. Do you or can you offer any advice? Also other youtubers say the 8Kw is most likely a 5Kw as there isnt a 8Kw heater ? Any advice would be appreciated. Many thanks
my 5kw unit hand calculated is 0.0208ml / pulse.. "ran 63h@0.8hz-1gal" so wide open a 6hz "5.6 was factory" actually uses 0.45L/hr which = 16332BTU/hr = 4.78KW/h www.eia.gov/energyexplained/index.php?page=about_energy_conversion_calculator just recently got an advertised 8kw unit but its the same exact design as my 5kw.. so I believe these Chinese and distributors are pulling a fast one
Hi, thanks for the great informative videos. I've just fitted the 5kw in my vauxhall vivaro van under the passenger seat using a turret mount plate but I'm a bit concerned how hot the plate gets as it's mounted on the rubber covered foam floor matting, should I be concerned?
Great video, didn't know the pump Hz was adjustable but guess its so the controller can be setup for all the kw model range. I wonder if the sooting up I read about is because of a too rich setup? Is there any way to test how lean it can run for highest fuel/heat efficiency and least sooting? :-)
There is a facebook group named ''Chinese diesel vehicel heater's'' or something in the files there inthe FAQ's you find a file by a man named Henk Kommers
Thanks for the lead, but I'm not on face book. Has Mr Kommers got a youtube channel? I'm always skeptical about results people claim to have, this is why I like this channel where you can see exactly how he is getting his figures and results in real time on camera. I'm sure you understand me.:-)
The Only way to get the "perfect" setting's is to use a flu gas analyzer as used for domestic diesel heater's at the low and high output . Ps Mr Kommers is a Admin of that FB group and posted a video from a member , It seem's legit . I was a certified domestic diesel heater technician . I hope this info will help you.
430ml/hr x 24hrs= 10320ml or 348oz which is equal to .9gal so the 8k heater burns about a gallon of fuel over a 24hr span. that is damned efficient! 8k is 3 times more thermal output than 2k and with only twice the fuel consumption. is propane really any better? i dont think it could be by much.
Kerosene seems to burn the hottest, clean and is cheap too, around 80p ltr. I use my 5kw in a wooden lodge in conjunction with a log burner sometimes and boy is it toastie. They cost anywhere between £120 and £140.00 off eBay. Did you not have a remote control with your's David?
Is there a way to turn the heater on with just putting voltage on a wire or bridge wires? Asking cuz i got a frostwatcher in my bus so it closes a relay when the temperature drops below the temp i selected
Thanks for your videos. Just ordered a 5kw. Do you know if the dosing pump is the same on all units? Just seen some near silent pumps have come out and wondered if it's worth the risk ordering one.
Hi David, I notice when you checked the current on warm up it was only at 8amps, that seems low or was I not paying enough attention? I'm looking to get this heater for a garage and am speccing a power supply (hence the query). Thanks for the vids chap
It was between 8 - 9 amps. It just depended if the unit was hot already or not. If you go for 15 amps that gives you plenty of overhead. I saw a 12v 15A for under £10 on ebay.
Hello, could you give the duct diameter for the 8kW, please? Also, would you know the maximum permissible duct length, presuming no elbows (I'm thinking to use the heater in a remote cabin and would have several metres of run)? Thank you.
The manual controller is super simple, but you're stuck with whatever power output it left the factory with. The LCD one you can adjust how much power you want in the settings, it's just a little more fiddly.
I am thinking of buying a diesel heater to heat my garage in the winter when I fixing with my car which model would you say is the best for me I think of the power price and performance 5kw vs 8kw
Apples to apples chances are the 5kw is the same heater as the 8kw you're looking at. As someone once told me, you can turn a big heater down but you can't turn a small heater up. If that makes sense. :)

When I saw your first video about the 2kw unit I checked ebay for em and found 2kw, 5kw, and 8kw units but the description for each of them listed the exact same model number. Was this the case for you as well? I'd be really curious to find out as this could be a good heater for me to use for outdoor projects where mains voltage isn't an option for heating.
They seem to just be copy and pasting the same information no matter what size heater they are selling. If you've got deep cycle batteries and some way of recharging them I don't see why you couldn't

David the thermal imaging segment of this video is very valuable in its own right, for anyone installing one of these. like me right now.
Awesome video. Looks more than 10ml.. thanks for taking the time to measure things properly like current, temp and noise
David the 12v setting can be changed to 24v My 8kw unit is a lot quieter than my 2kw one another nice test 👍
How do you change the voltage ?

I just discovered your amazing channel! I live in a camper and I have a 5kw set to work at 0.8hz for economic reasons, but a smell of unburned diesel comes out of the muffler, do you know which are the best settings for that frequency? It's been the second year that I've used it in this way and it's never blocked but the combustion chamber however is colder and this worries me a bit about possible encrustations, I thought that the outlet pipe could be coupled with the inlet one to create a preheating, but the fear of an uncontrolled positive feedback stopped me. What do you think?

My 2KW heater came with a 12v 18.5-20 fuel pump. Problem is there are no replacements to be found. Checked ebay, Amazon, AliExpress, Alibaba.
I'd buy a 22ml pump and adjust the fueling.
The Blue Symbol in the Top right corner of the LCD Display is for Speed Sensor and Circuit board function...will flash in the case of failure.
Just bought this heater! I’m looking forward to trying it out in my boat 👍🏻
Very informative video.......interesting that it’s quieter
I bought a 2kw, and received the carbon fibre effect one, set to 5hz (5kw) but it can be set from 3hz to 8hz. Wouldn't of minded the smaller one as its for a small van!
LambySRI how are you getting on with your heater, I’ve just ordered an 8kw for my small van , wondering if I’ve gone over the top a bit , want it mainly to defrost the van quickly in the winter ,
But also if I have a tent over the side door it should heat that ok

so about 600watts (0.6Kw) of the lowest and 4.3Kw on the highest setting! probably some energy lost through the exhaust so these would be maximum numbers
David you are quite the scientist. BRAVO
Could you please show us your CO.detector, and an open door...

Oh and thanks for the fuel maths work out 😜stay safe ☮️
Really informative, thank you as a fellow Scot prepping for winter 👍
Seems like a lot of wasted heat going out of the exhaust. A very thorough explanation and great video! Thanks, brother!
Super Dave I just watch an Aussie guy that has tested a hot water exchange unit to the exhaust for continuous hot water.....looks to work well..
These Heaters..all makes ..tend to lose 20/25 percent of Heat via the Exhaust.
I wore that same outfit during a particularly rough but well regimented period of my life.
I have the 2kw and the controller seems to tell you the temp in the exhaust- it stops at around 110-115 - very cool
Great comparison have you any suggestions on the the air filter and how to quieten howling type of noise seem to be more quieter when the silencer is removed but it's still there
Adjusting the fueling can help alter that howling noise.
It doesn't shut off. It slows down to the lowest setting and then goes back up when the temperature falls again.
I saw on someone else's post that they make sure and run it a full power every now and then to get it hot and help burn the soot off.
Thanks for all of the testing and great videos!
My workshop is 12-foot x 12 foot so will the 2 kW heater do the job and how much fuel will it use? loved your video thanks
Bob in the UK
Cheers.
10 amp on glow plug then about .5 amp running i would get a second battery
Hello Mr David. Please tell what is the smallest battery that I should buy to run the 2 kw heater for a nights camping. We are going on a motorbike and hope to carry a heater and a battery in the panniers. Thank you. J
Hi David, watched the videos fantastic made my mind up to get one.
Question I have is tge cable came with a 3 pin for the controller and a 2 pin for the oil pump switch but this has 3 wires!!!! Do you know if the oil pump controller only needs just the red and black?
Cheers Andy
Odd, the oil pump only needs two wires and they are usually the same colour.
Cheers Mick
Thanks. This was very useful. I just acquired the same unit for my boat so most reassuring to see it working. Amazing value for money.
Please humor us and angle at fuel pump at 45° intake side down so it will bleed the air out of the pump
For the purpose of?
It's always in the instruction manual
No air bubbles that are hydraulic delivery of the diesel fuel so the heater doesn't go out
Great video!
@@DavidMcLuckie great advice thank you.

Thanks. Peter.
Yes, you're not changing the size so much that it would be an issue.
what happen if the diesel finish while the heater works ? thank you ... is the heater stop working or what ?
Hi my heater is TS D2 apparently its the 8 kw model ,it appears to have the measurements of the 8 ,but has a little one button press remote, it seems strange that it doesn't come with the fancy remote with several buttons as it's the biggest model, does it seem right to you .

David can you do video seeing if the fuel settings after tuning are saved on the ecu or in the controller as I've tuned mine with the digital controller but quickly swapping to the rotary as its running produces black smoke and CO readings go through the roof.
That is a good question. I think the answer might be a bit of both. But that's something that could be tested.
I saw somewhere it's possible to just turn the fan on. Do you know how to do that?
I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere in the instructions, sorry.
did you find out of it??

@Anthony Drew Yea, I have been using Flixzone for years myself :D
Hi David, fantastic videos ,can I use petrol instead of diesel,it would out cheaper I think! cheers.
Sort of. Petrol does work, but I found it only really runs at full power. When it tries to slow down it goes out.
Everything I've seen looks like it would just melt I'd really like to get your feed back on this and a possible supplier
If you know of any were I could get the right product?
Oh I'm planning on running both units off my main fuel tanks one unit would be about 5 feet from the tank and the other would be around 20 feet would you put check valves on the fuel lines?
So I won't take any risk of losing the prime on them?
Thanks for the videos and insight its been very helpful.
20ft might be too far to pump fuel for the heater. I think something like 5M is the max length and that's for a straight run. Lengths of duct are available but they are expensive.

Did you change the controller as well?
What is the difference in cfm of air delivered by the different size heaters?
considering they use the same fans this would be interesting to know the differences!
Thanks for the fantastic informational video. Any idea if the temperature display can be set to Fahrenheit?

Only the paper manual. I'll have a look next time I'm in the workshop.
@@DavidMcLuckie Thank you
It's how many magnets are on the impeller fan for detecting the speed. Two magnets is SN2. Two magnets with alternate polarity or only one magnet is SN1.

I've also been told the 2kw is a 5kw. They can't both be 5kw. Under the front seat is a popular choice, especially with camper conversions.
my 5kw unit hand calculated is 0.0208ml / pulse.. "ran 63h@0.8hz-1gal" so wide open a 6hz "5.6 was factory" actually uses 0.45L/hr which = 16332BTU/hr = 4.78KW/h

The unit itself is supplied with a 'rubber' seal to seal onto the mounting plate. So I can't see it getting that hot. Is yours hot to the touch?

Great video, didn't know the pump Hz was adjustable but guess its so the controller can be setup for all the kw model range. I wonder if the sooting up I read about is because of a too rich setup? Is there any way to test how lean it can run for highest fuel/heat efficiency and least sooting? :-)
Not enough fuel can soot up to
yes or too much air.;-) So putting my question another way. Is it possible to fine tune these burners with the pump Hz feature to reduce soot?

The Only way to get the "perfect" setting's is to use a flu gas analyzer as used for domestic diesel heater's at the low and high output . Ps Mr Kommers is a Admin of that FB group and posted a video from a member , It seem's legit . I was a certified domestic diesel heater technician . I hope this info will help you.
430ml/hr x 24hrs= 10320ml or 348oz which is equal to .9gal
so the 8k heater burns about a gallon of fuel over a 24hr span. that is damned efficient!
8k is 3 times more thermal output than 2k and with only twice the fuel consumption. is propane really any better? i dont think it could be by much.
10320ml = 2.7262556US Gallons
his math was off also, it works out to 360ml/hr x 24hrs = 8640ml/Day = 8.64L/Day = 2.282447 US Gallons/Day
@@Gantzz321 that's what I get for relying on Google.
I opted for a non-remote version. Although you can buy the remote separately and pair it.
can I ask what arrangement you used to get the exhaust pipe through the wooden wall thanks.
Can you put a link as to where you bought it from please?
Plenty of choices on Amazon
I’m buying one for my cabin. Hoping 8kw can heat 1000sqft...
Of the three heaters I've seen they all had the same pump. That was a 2, 5 and 8kw.
@@DavidMcLuckie thanks man. That's good to know.
@@DavidMcLuckie yep that's the one I was looking at too, thanks again fella, really helpful info!
Love this guys voice
great video, how many square feet do you think they would heat as in room size? thinking of on for my 18 foot travel trailer. thanks
Hello, could you give the duct diameter for the 8kW, please? Also, would you know the maximum permissible duct length, presuming no elbows (I'm thinking to use the heater in a remote cabin and would have several metres of run)? Thank you.
Thanks for a great video. So would you advise getting the manual controller rather than the lcd ?
The manual controller is super simple, but you're stuck with whatever power output it left the factory with. The LCD one you can adjust how much power you want in the settings, it's just a little more fiddly.
David McLuckie “Fiddly”, is that a technical term? LOL
hi david what a great video, i am thinking of getting one of these to het my workshop is their any advice you could give me to help me set it up. cheers steve
Yes, absolutely
@@DavidMcLuckie cheers, i want to run it from a 240v supply, i am unable to find out what amps it draws to buy a power supply, would a 2amp power supply be enough.
many thanks steve
It uses about 10A at startup so I'd go for a 15A supply just make sure there is some headroom. I got a 12V 50A supply on eBay for under £20.
@@DavidMcLuckie thank you.
@@DavidMcLuckie hi david hope you are well. sorry to keep bothering you but I have now got my heater and starting to install. One problem I see is that where I want to mount the control panel is quite a distance from the heater so would it be ok if I extended the cable or would this cause issues. I wouldn’t think I would be a problem but I thought I would ask anyway.
All the best steve
When I saw your first video about the 2kw unit I checked ebay for em and found 2kw, 5kw, and 8kw units but the description for each of them listed the exact same model number. Was this the case for you as well? I'd be really curious to find out as this could be a good heater for me to use for outdoor projects where mains voltage isn't an option for heating.
They seem to just be copy and pasting the same information no matter what size heater they are selling. If you've got deep cycle batteries and some way of recharging them I don't see why you couldn't
