What's Happening at Bank? Northern Line New Platform

  • After my last video looking at the Old Northern Line Platform before it closed forever, I thought it might be interesting to do a 3D model to look at what's changing and how everything will connect up in future to better understand what's going on.
    Based on:
    content.tfl.go...
    The model is not to scale some details such as existing lift shafts are missing to make it easier to see what's going on.
    Model made using Blender

    Great animation and explanation! I've seen quite a few videos on the new tunnel and upgrades, but they were either static models or put in too much detail, making it confusing and difficult to read.

      Cheers, part of the reason I made it was all the plans I could find were static, which I thought made them hard to follow.

    So the Northern Line at Bank is literally above the DLR whilst work begins to close off the old southbound platform and to add a new southbound platform and to widen the concourse that would connect with the DLR, Waterloo & City Line and the Central Line.
    Bank station does need a massive upgrade and to have lifts installed which I think it’s great. Very interesting video.

      @@distractionbucket7454 I don't live in the UK and have only been to some stations, but maybe my least favorite is Heathrow 2/3. It's just very dull (no surprise since it's from the 70s) and a long walk from the terminals, although it can be good to stretch after a long flight. Luckily once Crossrail opens I won't have to worry about the lengthy Piccadilly line trip when I fly to LHR. The inner circle stations that have lost their historic feel at platform level (like Euston Square or Blackfriars) are also visually unappealing.

    • @distractionbucket7454
      @distractionbucket7454  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Was struggling to work out if I have a least favourite station, but agree the circle line stations that got refurbed sometime in the '60s and left since then are looking very drab and unloved now, especially Euston Square. At least at Blackfriars they've re-done the above ground bits as part of the national rail upgrade.

    This is a really good and clear explanation and makes me instantly understand why this station is being remodelled. Will it happen on time? The question is whether they have already got that new Southbound Northern Line tunnel and platform ready before closing the old one. Does anyone out there know the answer to this? Still, after Themeslink, any overrunning infrastructure work will seem like nothing! If this is all up and running by June 2022, I will be seriously impressed!

      It's been going on behind the scenes since 2016, but the last bit was held up by the pandemic. I think it's ended up about 18 months behind the original schedule. Is there any reason why the Central Line couldn't get new platforms as well? As anyone who's been to them can prove, they've got a very nasty curve which I always thought was kinda dangerous and should probably get amended. If the Northern Line can get this, I don't see why the Central Line couldn't be considered as well - or is the Line deemed too important to close down long stretches of it for an extended period?

      @Distraction Bucket well... I have always wondered if connecting Moorgate to Cannon St would work but I think a new stair or escalator as part of Crossrail precludes it.... hard to grasp the 3D topography though.

      @distractionbucket7454  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@peterdowden7694 I had been thinking about doing Moorgate/Liverpool St at some point as I do think it's fascinating with all the Crossrail tunnels down there.
      As for extending the Northern City further south- I know many years ago there was a suggestion to extend as far as Lothbury (which would have been so short a distance the back of the train would be leaving Moorgate as the front arrived at the new station!) I vaguely recall that going any further than that would have been problematic because of the Central Line/the Bank of England Vaults, but don't quote me on that.
      Nowadays, the main Moorgate Crossrail escalators do run across the end of the NCL tunnels, I'm not sure about the exact depths, but all the info I can find online suggests the passage between the two sets of escalators is above the Northern line making it about the same depth as the NCL, meaning it probably doesn't leave enough space, but that's only my best guess.
