    I’m a UCLA alumna from attendance in the early 60s. Believe it or not, tuition was $110 per semester. Excellent school, then and now.

    I attended in the mid 70s. Good school BUT . . . many profs grade on a curve-so if half the class scores 97 or above, then a 92 can easily be a C. Freshman survey classes can have up to 350 students so TAs do the actual teaching. Adusei is being truthful, but his name suggests an immigrant background (which is excellent) however, the African American presence is sparse and social life can be chilly especially for first generation students who attended majority minority schools. Lastly, I live on the east coast and spent a decade in the mid-west. Practically very few knew or viewed UCLA as prestigious; all of that hype is regional unless it’s an Ivy League school.

    choosing between UCLA and CSULB, my brother told me I should attend UCLA since I did get admitted, but at the same time, Im not a very competitive person. I like to experience new things with a bit more freedom, rather than all the research. My major isnt in the STEM major and financial wise I am not trying to think of it too much. I also want to study abroad but lost between the two schools I was admitted into. I would like a community where I can get to know people better in smaller circles rather than larger circle. Im also not very determined with what I am doing, or not really sure of what Im heading into. Any advice you can give me based on this information?

    • @baffouradusei
      @baffouradusei  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      hey congrats on your acceptances! I'd say consider why you applied to UCLA in the first place, and consider if those reasons actually matter to you. There is nothing wrong with the Cal States, I have a cousin who graduated from CSUN with engineering, travels the world and is doing great. But I also know a lot of people come into UCLA undeclared (no major) or they end up having to figure things out as they go along. It might sound scary but it can definitely be done. And there are lots of paths to take; not everyone does research, some people study abroad, etc etc
      UCLA might not be worth it if you don't already WANT to go there. I can only really speak for the STEM majors, but the work is pretty intense, and there is strong work hard/ play hard culture. And of course, its more expensive. But you've been admitted, so the school sees something special in you. If going there feels like a risk, consider if the potential benefits and quality of life outweighs the risk - consider if you'll be motivated and have a positive experience overall.

      @@baffouradusei thank you for the advice and yeah I was not determined to go to ucla. Im transferring from a two year cc and originally planned on going to CSULB but also applied for UCLA thinking I would most likely not get in. I did not originally plan it but thought it would be nice if I could get in. Now that I received that I had gotten in, I started thinking to myself maybe ucla would give me more opportunities to learn further about what I’m studying atm( which I’m not fully determined) but at the same time afraid of all the time and money would be a part of my future regret. As I said earlier I’m not as determined as many people that I know who go to UCLA within my group of friends. But as you said the risks and considering the outcome I am not sure how my experience will turn out. Thank you for the advice though

      I am still contemplating between ucla and UC Berkeley, only have a week to make my decision. Uc berkeley is #1 for civil engineering undergrad and overall a better engineering school than UCLA. The cons for not choosing uc berkely is the great distance it is from home, on campus housing cost and tuition cost. I agree the college rankings are misleading especially when they are classified as being tied for the #1 UC spot since that downplays the legacy of UC Berkeley and implies that UCLA is at the same level or not above uc berkeley.

    hii! thank you so much for this helpful video on ucla for i am a high school junior who wants to go to ucla and major in neuroscience too :) would you recommend ucla’s neuroscience major? how is it like

    • @baffouradusei
      @baffouradusei  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      hey! So first of all, I actually ended up switching my major to physiological science. I switched because I realized I had a much greater interest in the anatomy and physiology of the whole body rather than brain specifically. But also, neuroscience upper division courses required that I take a few more classes before my junior year that I hadn’t taken yet. At the time, it was possible that staying in neuroscience would mean I would have to stay an extra year in college. Physci required one less class but it made my 4-year plan much smoother with that small difference.
      As far as difficulty, neuroscience and physiological science both have a reputation of being the difficult ones out of the life sciences majors. So it was more of a side-grade in switching. We happen to learn a lot about the brain and we can even take some of the neuroscience classes as electives.
      How is the neuroscience major like: you likely won’t actually start any neuroscience classes until the fall of your junior year. By then you should have completed general bio, gen chem and ochem, and physics. You’ll have some core classes that you take each quarter which you should prioritize, since they’ll probably be the most difficult. Then you have biochem, and then electives that take on more nuanced topics of the brain. Again it’s known as a difficult major so expect challenging tests and lots of studying, but across UCLA as a whole there’s always lots of support.
      Would I recommend it: yes, only if you’re more interested in the brain than the rest of the body. Material is pretty dense but rewarding and will definitely help in the long run in developing your study habits and academic ability. Likewise, I would recommend physiological science if you have an interest in the brain but want to learn more about other parts of the body as well.
      Hope this helps! gl with the rest of high school
