I think it's a good investment. Rookie card or not doesn't matter. It's about rarity.
Look at Babe Ruth. Most collectors would look to the Goudey or M101 cards, but the most valuable Ruth card is the 1914 Baltimore News. None of those are rookie cards. The latter is a minor league card.

I thought the guy said that the '84 Star Jordan PSA 8 would be rarer (not more valuable) that the '86 Fleer Jordan in PSA 10. He would be right on that. There will never be a 10 and probably only a handful of nines at best. And with only 3,000 legitimate cards printed and a bunch of those in BGS slabs, does not leave many for PSA to grade as high as an 8.

“True” rookie or not, people that collected in the 80’s and 90’s know that this was THEE rookie, which isn’t saying that the ‘86 fleer is not also a rookie. Same as the ‘85 topps Mcgwire and ‘84 fleer update clemens is THEE rookie cards, respectively.
I think the prices on the star in PSA grades are no longer comparable to a bumped up grade in BGS, as a lot of people just dont like or buy BGS, so with PSA graded versions it opens up a whole new market for the star cards, which should increase their values and possible decrease the values on the ‘86 fleer.

To a MUCH lesser extent….. the 1989 Topps Debut sets with the Griffey and Sosa AND a 1989 back to the card was CHANGED to be a 1990 in the mid 1990’s. That was the shenanigans Topps was playing DESPITE their release date of NOVEMBER 1989.

Of course it will be worth more than the Fleer in high grades. The scarcity difference is so massive! We're talking about around 1k total graded in all conditions until now. And if there were all these fakes out there which no one could tell then obviously the BGS pop would be much higher already. The Fleer is around 30k pop overall, huge difference in rarity. And in the high grades you will probably see only double digit pops in PSA 8 or higher, where a PSA 10 Fleer is 300-400% more in pop even in a 10. The Star was an official licensed Pro card from Jordan's actual rookie year, (and the only one) True RC period. The amount of lies that have been spread about that 84' #101 are crazy, even on this video that one guy on a podcast is saying they printed more a few years later with the same printer but so what. NOT true. The only fake star cards that were reprinted look totally different, colors and all, the "shop at home" cards. The "type 2s" were cards from a different year's set and supposed to be disposed of but a rouge employee stole them, again they were from the next year after this Jordan rookie 1984 #101. None of those things involve this #101 card. Educate yourself on it, the ceiling for this card is so high. There is no non-modern card you can bet on that has anywhere near this upside potential from where it is now.

I would love to have either Jordan rookie graded psa doesn’t even matter the grade they’re just the grail of grails

  • @TamTranTriZzle
    @TamTranTriZzle 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Nate is correct in that Beckrtt Monthly (The Bible back in the day) listed the 84 Star MJ as an XRC, which even by today's standard (look at the XRCs by Select) is a true RC. With that said, It is going to take quite a bit of time for it to overtake the Fleer MJ in notoriety and price.
BUT, what it does do, especially with PSA grading them now, is open up a fierce discussion and buzz for the card over the next few years, which will undoubtedly drive the prices way up short term.
Investors and Collectors love a "new" hot card to speculate on, and wether the Star card will be more significant or not in 10 years over tge Fleer card, one thing for certain is that the attention and speulation on the Star cards NOW, will drive the value up crazily over the next couple years, and one can make a pretty sizable profit buyung these now with a potential flip in 1-2 years.

Everybody knows that when something new comes out, it’s always way overpaid for. Well most people know that. You’ll see lots more 8s, 9s and 10s. There’s no way somebody is going to pay 1 mil based on that 8 being 100k. SCN was spot on. Most real Jordan collectors don’t even care for either. The only ones that do are investors. Reminds me of when you traded that pop 1 10/10 Jordan Auto.

Not sure what the one guy was saying about the Star 101 being produced AGAIN 2 years after the original issue. There's no evidence backing that up. Part of the 1985-86 Star Set was reprinted from an original plate - but the quality was poor and there are obvious differences from the legit issue.

This is a wise investment. Especially heading into CHICAGO for the National next year. Home of the 6-time NBA champion! I agree with Probstein that we probably don't see any higher than a PSA 8.5 in today's grading standards. I'm willing to bet though that a PSA 9 for this card would be the equivalent to a PSA 10. I own the 2nd year Star MJ and it's still in the bag. I want to grade it badly but not sure if I want to bust open the bag in order to do it. I wonder if Star would eventually grade unopened team bags.

You do have to be careful with star basketball cards. Although there is several ways of knowing these aren't real. One good way is to pay attention to the back of it. The licensing printing is on the bottom and usually says 1983,84, 85, and 86. There were some made that look just like the original but had reproduction written in the middle of the card. So always keep an eye out when dealing with these. I grew up with these and they are great rookies and I still like finding them myself. Wish I could be at the national myself. Lol. Great video Geoff.

My thoughts it’s just going to flood the market now that PSA is grading these Star rookies of Jordan! If there BGS cases they will crack them to PSA because they think they can get more money! The Fleer 86 went for 760 k at its peak now at 180k it’s really not rare pop 320 but you see 15-20 a month at major Auction Houses! With the economy the way it is there only so much money to go around & with Star card competing against the 86 fleer these cards will go down big time! Not a good investment at this time ! No

Epic Geoff! I think it's incredible to have that card in an 8, Do not think an eight will pass a Fleer 10 but 100k good price! The most important thing is what you're doing with the kids, I love that you're so generous in your trades and dealings with them. Nice work!

  • @bigc7_cards

I won't go as far to say that the 1984 Star PSA 8 will be at 86 Fleer PSA 10 value... BUT... Not only did you buy the dip on Jordan in general, but you bought into one of the first PSA graded 84 Star Jordan RC's. That's one heck of a good investment 🔥

Yep, I've always considered it the true rookie. I'm torn on PSA grading though because it likely means wider acceptance of Star cards and therefore higher prices. Can't be picking them up as cheap as I once could.
