How nice that this was documented at the time. One can only speculate what new pocket watches of the quality of the high-end Illinois grades would cost today, looking at how much skilled labour and machinery was required to produce them. Even at the time, they were only made affordable for ordinary people by the economies of scale made possible by the production-line manufacturing techniques that American companies like Illinois, Hamilton, Waltham and others. brought to watchmaking. This was a high point in American innovation and manufacturing.
