Enjoyed the video Coach Mac. I understand this all completely. My first 3 years in high school, (Missouri Class 3A, a town of about 4,500 total population) on defense, we ran 3 man, 4 man, and 5 man fronts every game, 2 gap and 1 gap combinations. We were a cover 4 or would drop down into cover 3 depending on formations. We usually had a new defense every week for the style/personnel of our opponenet. So after 2 years of running them as freshman and JV we were ready for knowing it all on Friday nights. Our opponents were forced to think when we changed up our fronts and we had lots of success.
My senior year we had a coaching change. First thing I asked him was "please dont let us run a 4-4 defense" because most teams in our conference used it, and we whipped them every year, the defenses just didn't work. So he said no it's a "4-2-5". But it wasn't like your 4-2-5. It was a 4-4 cover 3 or cover 1 every game, every play. He just called one of the outside linebackers a down safety, as he knew we were used to complex schemes coming up through our very successful program and we could handle it and play fast, and play well. I was voted captain of our team and voiced my concern. We were used to a complex offense with multiple formations and we were an outside zone trey open play action boot team. In the middle of the year he changed our offense to the double wing "air force " type offense. We went from using about 60 plays a year for 3 years down to 6. 6 offensive plays. Teams used to call out who was getting the ball when we were on offense. That's when we went from being #1 in our state to losing games for the first time all year.
Our team had 9 seniors. We were scheduled to play a team that had 26. Whole offensive line were seniors and most were over 270 pounds and 2 were over 300. I weighed 240, and I was second heaviest behind our A gap player who was 250. I played 3 technique. So this team ran double tight with a wing and/ or a nasty slot between the tackle and tight end, he was barely lined up off the line just so it wouldn't be illegal formation for too many men on the line. We stayed in our 4-4 defense the whole game. Since they basically, counting the slot and tight ends had 8 men up front and we had 4. So they double teamed all 4 of us lineman every play. And each oone outweighed us but 2 of them together put us in an impossible situation to hold our own against them, as they were bigger, stronger, and had more weight. Our coach refused to give me or any of us a chance to be put in position to play one man, and try to beat him to make plays in the backfield. We got ran over all night long. We gave it all we had but 8 vs 4 usually loses. So it's awesome that you will change up what you need to put your players in position to have success.
